A Black Cat Named Snowball

I first met Snowball (first named Thomasina – my father’s name was Thomas, and that’s why I chose her) at the Independent Cat Society nearly 20 years ago. I just had a feeling she was a match for me, and, after some paperwork, I brought her home with me.

I soon learned that Snowball was a scaredy-cat. For the first couple of weeks in her new home, everything startled or scared her – me, my other cat Pumpkin (a cuddly tabby that looked just like her namesake), the refrigerator, passing cars, the ceiling fan, and anything else that moved or made noise. Once, in those early days, I couldn’t find her for hours on end – until I looked behind the refrigerator. I remember thinking, “Well, at least she’s not afraid of that one anymore.”

It took time but Snowball gradually warmed up, at least to me and Pumpkin. Some years later, when I began dating my husband, I knew he was a keeper because she didn’t run and hide from him right off. When we got engaged and made a cross-country move, I drove Pumpkin and Snowball to their new home. Upon arrival, I could not find Snowball anywhere in the car – I was terrified that she’d gotten out and run away somewhere although I knew that wasn’t like her. Finally, I thought to look under the driver’s seat – yes, she’d been hiding right there the whole time.

In her later years, she earned the nickname “little kitty live-a-lot,” outliving two dogs and two other cats (sadly, including my beloved Pumpkin), and passing away earlier this year at more than 20 years old. Although she was somewhat aloof and anti-social by nature, she lay right beside Pumpkin the night she passed, and we found her still cuddled around Pumpkin’s body in the morning. She did the same for a cat we inherited when my father passed, Midnight, who also passed away unexpectedly. Her kind and loving nature, even though she was never a demonstrative cat, brought years of happiness, companionship, and joy to our family. She may have lurked in the background a lot, but she was there when you needed her. We feel thankful to have had her, particularly for so many years, and are grateful to have the opportunity to honor her with a donation to the Independent Cat Society, the organization that brought her to us. Here’s to Snowball, and all the scaredy-cats!

General Operating Expenses Supports medical expenses, food, litter, payroll for our medication and cleaning staff, and shelter upkeep

Trap Neuter Return / Assisted Spay & Neuter Fund Supports our ICS TNR Squad and their operations to help cats in our community

Building Fund Goes toward the planning and building of a new, improved ICS shelter

Monica, your Sponsor-a-Cat spokescat, wants to thank all our visitors who brought her friends gifts of catnip, toys, blankets, and treats over the holidays. But this time of year, after the holiday excitement is over, we still need less exciting donations – food, paper, and laundry products. All these donations keep us happy and healthy every day, not just during the holidays.

Of course, all year long, you can send a yearly pledge to sponsor one of the cats at the shelter. There is always a year-long need for sponsors to help maintain the shelter’s needs. All of your generous donations are tax deductible, too – ask for a receipt when you come in with your cans, bottles, rolls, and anything else you might find on our wish list (see page 3).

Sponsor-A-Cat!

I want to Sponsor-A-Cat from the Independent Cat Society I have enclosed a check for: __________ $180 for one year of Sponsor-A-Cat __________ $15 for the first month of Sponsor-A-Cat. I pledge to send $15 each month to Sponsor-A-Cat __________ I pledge to send the amount that fits my budget and feels “right” to Sponsor-A-Cat each month

Please mark “SAC” on your envelope and check memo. The sponsor will receive a photo and biography of his or her Sponsor-A-Cat.

Aggie Penny Shadows

Aggie says, “Visitors often notice my ultra-slim silhouette and worry that I don’t get enough to eat. I eat plenty, but we always need more paté flavors of Fancy Feast, Friskies, and Wellness grain-free foods. Sometimes one of my friends gets sick and needs special food like Science Diet A/D, I/D/, and K/D.”

Cans and cases are a welcome donation during any season. Single cans of food that your cat has mysteriously rejected often become another cat’s favorite at our shelter.

Penny shared her kitten thoughts before going to her forever home: “There’s nothing a cat likes more – besides treats and food maybe – than a soft, cozy bed to curl up in with a friend. There are shelves full of big bottles of detergent and bleach – bigger than I’ll probably ever be – and some boxes of dryer sheets to keep all of our laundry clean and soft in the shelter.”

After snoozing in a soft bed, some cats don’t like to wake up smelling like flowers. Some cats, like some people, are sensitive to added fragrances, so our wish list asks that generous donors look for detergents and dryer sheets without added chemicals.

Shadows admitted, “All of us – even Sweetheart candidates – have an accident once in a while that needs to be cleaned up quickly. It’s helpful to have paper towels handy for water-bowl spills or occasional furballs, as well as general cleaning of the shelves and furniture in all of the rooms.”

Of course, we often have need of other paper products, such as paper plates and even toilet paper. And to keep the shelter neat, we also use a lot of garbage bags for frequent trips to the dumpster.

We sure do thank each and every one of you for thinking of us!

ICS 2016 Board of Directors

Some Cat Education... From a Dog?

ICS would like to thank everyone who “got out the vote” in our November Board of Directors Election. This year, our board will continue their hard work to improve the shelter and find forever homes for the cats and kittens that find sanctuary with us.

This year, ICS welcomes both new friends and longtime volunteers to the board:

Vice President Jocelyn Vereb

Corresponding Secretary Kay Vasquez

Members at large Diana Foster Jennifer Stall

Please visit our website at http://www.catsociety.org to review a full report of our accomplishments for 2015, and our goals for 2016. We look forward to continuing to serve our cats, our membership, and our community!

Do you want to know more about how you can help ICS reach its goals? Visit or contact us to learn about the many ways you can share your time and talents. We are always looking for new adoption counselors, fundraising gurus, techno-enthusiasts, and just plain nice folks to work with our cats and our various committees.

You can even complete an online volunteer application at our website and get in touch with our Volunteer Coordinator right away!

Our guest writer, “Ollie” (and his helper Viktoria Voller) has done a little research and found out that there is an awful lot to know about the history of cats, and how they’ve gotten to where they are today. Read on to learn more about the plight of

cats and what makes them so unique.

Three thousand years ago, cats were worshipped as gods by the ancient Egyptians. This is their history and they have never forgotten it!

As a normal and regular guy dog, I just love to chase cats that always get away because these mysterious creatures jump up on kitchen counters. In addition, they collect privileges by purring for their human. They can purr all they want but I know for a fact that they poop in our gardens, stress out in the shelters, nibble on houseplants, and refuse to come when they are called unless they really want to come.

The problem today seems to be in their sheer numbers. Every area shelter and humane society has more than their quota of cats and kittens on site. Obviously, the adoption rates are down. Is it because cats have a hard time selling themselves? Most shelters try to help cats get placed through special adoptions programs, behavior help lines, pet parenting classes and trap-neuter-return programs that humanely control feral populations.

So how can the unique qualities of cats be marketed to increase adoptions? Clearly, it’s in a dog’s best interest to get as many cats placed in homes as possible. Why not? As I said, they are fun to chase.

Many times, people come to ICS asking for help finding a home for a stray kitten or cat. Sometimes, the cat they need a home for is one they used to keep as a pet, but cannot do so any longer. The Independent Cat Society alone gets up to twenty calls and emails per week like this! Just think about all of the other shelters out there receiving similar requests. It’s amazing! And despite all of their best efforts to save, adopt, and spay and neuter that cat population, the percentage of cats and/or kittens that are placed in forever homes is much less than for its shelter dogs and puppies.

But cats are not dogs and we can’t change them. Cats are cats. They hunt, they cough up hairballs, they have little regard for a human’s personal space, and they don’t (often) do tricks or fetch their owner’s newspaper. But, here’s what cats do best of all: they make wonderful companions for humans. Their independence, grace, and just plain entertaining behavior has made humans happy for centuries, and even though they don’t usually “work” the way many of us dogs do, they can fill a gap in a human’s life that no other pet can.

These very unique cat and kitten qualities can be used to promote and increase adoptions. Do you have a cat you’re looking to help find a new home? Before you consider a shelter, consider some of these ideas instead:

• Promote the cat’s need for a good home on social media, such as Facebook;

• Post the cat’s information in your local grocery store, health club, or other neighborhood gathering place;

• Ask around to your friends, family and neighbors, to see if they might like a new companion in their lives.

As I wrote, at one time, these pets were thought to be Egyptian gods, and I’m not kidding. So people, if you want to witness tiny Egyptian gods running all over your home and jumping on countertops, adopt some cats and hurry up while we still have some available.

Sunny is looking for the next great volunteer to help us reach our 2016

goals. Could it be you?
