Portsmouth is only 90 minutes by direct train from central London but has the benefit of being located in a beautiful city on the south coast of England. The campus is situated in the city centre and is only a short walk from miles of stunning coastline. The popular holiday destination of the Isle of Wight can be visited in a day, whilst ferries also leave Portsmouth for France and Spain, easily connecting Portsmouth to continental Europe. and the Channel Islands

The University traces its academic roots to 1869, marking 140 years of quality education in the city and wider region. Portsmouth was assessed as the top university for student satisfaction out of all south coast universities in this year’s National Student Survey. It was also ranked the best modern university

Welcome to the University of Portsmouthin the UK for student satisfaction. The University has recently invested £11.5m in the library facilities. Such modernisation and investment is evident right across the University campus - £100m has been spent in recent years, including multi-million pound cutting-edge, purpose-built premises for Portsmouth Business School.

The most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) confirmed the University as undertaking world class research in a number of areas. For example, in Applied Mathematics, Portsmouth is equal first with Cambridge, Durham and Oxford, with the highest total (75%) for research that is internationally excellent and world-leading.

Welcome to the University of Portsmouth. I am very pleased that we have established International College Portsmouth (ICP) as an Associate College of the University. This partnership will allow ICP to offer programmes which lead into our degree courses in a range of disciplines. This extends the reach of the University both globally and academically, and gives an opportunity to take a Portsmouth degree to many aspiring students from overseas who may not otherwise be ready to move directly into undergraduate studies with us.

At Portsmouth we foster a thriving cosmopolitan community in which we value the contribution to campus intellectual and social life made by our international students. We believe

that we have a healthy and mutually enriching environment for both home and for overseas students. I wish you every success in your ICP studies and in your exciting new life in Portsmouth. I look forward, in due course, to hearing of your progress on to one of our degree programmes and eventually I hope to welcome you at our Graduation Ceremony where we can celebrate your academic achievements.

Studying in the UKThe UK is home to some 130 universities. These institutions have

welcomed international students for many hundreds of years and

the UK remains an attractive destination for students today. UK

qualifications are recognised and respected throughout the world

for their quality and integrity. The UK’s quality assurance process

has become a benchmark for quality assurance standards in many

countries around the world.

Highest standardsAlmost all UK universities – including the University of Portsmouth – are public entities as they were established by Parliament and continue to receive their core funding from public sector sources. Universities, colleges and schools in the UK are required, as part of their accreditation and registration process, to undertake continuous improvement programmes to ensure that the quality of the education programmes offered to all students meets the highest possible standards.

Valuable learning experienceIn an increasingly complex and globalised world, employees need more than technical skills and subject knowledge to succeed. Employers put a premium on those people who can think both logically and laterally, work autonomously and independently, demonstrate problem solving capability and contribute effectively to group or team activities. The learning experience offered by institutions in the UK provides students with the opportunity to acquire and practise these skills as part of their degree studies.

Work opportunities International students choose the UK not just for academic excellence, but also to experience living in a different country and environment. Those in the UK on a student (adult) visa are automatically entitled to work part-time during their studies, and upon completion of their degree course are now eligible to stay for two years in order to gain valuable paid work experience in the UK.

European linksThe UK is an important member of the European Union and continental Europe is only a short distance away. Using a Schengen visa, students are able to explore this exciting and culturally diverse region. With many budget flights available, it is easy and relatively cheap to visit Europe’s historic capitals – including Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rome and Madrid – over a long weekend.

PortsmouthVibrant and exciting

Where is Portsmouth?Portsmouth is one of the UK’s most vibrant and exciting cities. Situated on the south coast of England and only 90 minutes by train to London, it is a great place to live, work and study.

The Historic Dockyard is home to famous ships including Henry VIII’s Mary Rose and Nelson’s HMS Victory – the most famous warship in the world. Celebrated people born in Portsmouth include Charles Dickens, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and former British Prime Minister, James Callaghan, whilst authors HG Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling have also called Portsmouth ‘home’ at one time! For those interested in history, Portsmouth was the launching point for the decisive moment of the Second World War; D-Day, the largest seaborne landing in history.

Portsmouth’s skyline is dominated by the landmark Spinnaker Tower which offers stunning views over the harbour and beyond. It is also home to calm marinas, green parks in which to relax and a beautiful coastline to enjoy.

Portsmouth is one of the country’s sunniest spots, with the average daily temperature at 20°C during the summer months. Rainfall is also much lower than the national average and snow is unusual.

Welcome to the cityAs one of the UK’s largest ports, Portsmouth is used to welcoming people from all over the world. The city is compact, so travelling around by foot or on bike is very convenient. Given that money can be saved on transport, the cost of living in Portsmouth is relatively low.

If you wish to travel further for your adventures, Portsmouth has regular ferry links to the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and continental Europe (including France and Spain), and there is an airport just 20 miles from the city. In addition to being within easy reach of London, Portsmouth also sits close to the beautifully picturesque countryside of southern England.

If you like shopping, you will love Portsmouth. The city boasts three main shopping areas, including the new £200 million waterside complex

LawThe School of Law is a thriving, innovative, well regarded provider of legal education which produces

confident and employable graduates. The undergraduate law provision has grown, in terms of breadth

of curriculum provision and student demand, steadily and substantially from the launch of the first

qualifying law degrees in 2002. The School has recently opened a mock courtroom with facilities

comparable to a real court of law which allows students to simulate full blown trials.

Students can choose between a qualifying law degree (LLB) or a non-qualifying degree (BA). All LLB degrees are accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board and you can choose between single honours law and law combined with business, criminology, or international relations. Students who pursue the BA route are able to undertake a 12 month Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) following their graduation, which entitles the student to the same professional accreditations and exemptions as a traditional LLB degree.

Law students will have the opportunity to take part in mooting and negotiation (key practical skills) in internal and external competitions and as part of the assessment in some units. Based in the new Richmond Building, the School of Law has state-of-the-art teaching facilities and staff with a wide variety of practical and academic experience of law.

ScienceEarth and Environmental ScienceIn this discipline area you will study how the Earth works, how it has changed and how this information can be used to aid civilisation and economic development. In many parts of the world, geological hazards such as landslides, earthquakes and tsunamis present major risks to life, infrastructure and livelihoods. Dedicated, dynamic staff will show how you how to ‘read’ the landscape, understand how it was formed and how life evolved in this planet.

Pharmaceutical Sciences/PharmacologyThe University of Portsmouth has a reputation as one of the best Schools of Pharmacy in the country. The University’s laboratory facilities, recently boosted by an investment of £1million to include an aseptic manufacturing area and equipment for a full range of pharmaceutical, chemical and biomedical techniques. The University courses have accreditation or approval from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, the Health Professions Council and the Institute of Biomedical Science.

PsychologyThe Department’s research centres and expert research groups, led by internationally renowned academics, underpin the teaching on these courses. The BSc (Hons) Psychology and Forensic Psychology graduates, graduating with a 2:2 or above, are eligible for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and Graduate Basis for Registration, which is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Sport SciencesIt is important that sports professionals have studied their subject to the highest level in order to flourish in the increasingly important global sports community and business. These courses cover a wide range of issues – along with a basic knowledge of sport and physical activity, you will study the issues and theories that underpin and drive the sports agenda. This subject area has been placed in the top ten in every National Student Survey since 2005. It is one of the world’s leading centres of research into the effects of environmental extremes on human performance.

BiosciencesRapid developments in life sciences mean that almost all areas of our life will be increasingly influenced by DNA-based technologies. With an ever expanding population, we also need biologists capable of cataloguing and conserving plant and animal life on Earth. At Portsmouth you will receive an excellent scientific education from academics who are leading researchers in their field and committed teachers alike, equipping you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will allow you to excel.

English coursesEnglish coursesICP offers English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programmes especially designed for those students needing to improve their English language skills before beginning their academic programme. English language programmes can be undertaken at ICP prior to starting an International Foundation, International Pathway or 1st Year Degree. English courses take place in the same classrooms as our academic courses, so students studying English are a part of the ICP student body and have access to ICP and University facilities. Successful completion of the ICP English course guarantees a place on the onward academic course at ICP.

The ICP English courses aim to develop a broad, academically useful vocabulary and improve pronunciation, grammatical skills and understanding. You will also build skills that will improve lecture-note-taking and seminar participation and develop essay, report, and academic assignment writing skills. Upon completion, students will have improved their reading comprehension and have developed those research skills necessary to be able to read academic

texts, journals and papers efficiently and effectively. Students will also be able to develop public speaking and presentation confidence and build those independent study skills required for success in a university environment.

EAP courses are conducted each semester (October, February, June – the normal ICP intakes). Students are required to attend classes for 20 – 25 hours each week for the 10 teaching weeks of a course. Students are placed in classes according to their English entry level. To ensure that students are able to join the correct level and to assist when other English language test appointments are not available, ICP offers its own English placement test that can be conducted in the student’s home country. For more information on how to sit this test, please contact ICP or your local representative.

Accommodation

ICP accommodation servicesOnce you have accepted an offer to study at ICP you may then wish for ICP support services to help arrange your accommodation in Portsmouth or offer advice about the best option for you. A vibrant coastal city with easy access to London, Portsmouth is a great place to live and provides some of the least expensive student accommodation in the south of England. Our support staff are experts on the local area and will be more than happy to help you find somewhere suitable to stay whilst studying at ICP.

HomestayFor many students, the opportunity to stay with a local family, off-campus and in the community, offers a special appeal. As a homestay student, you will have the chance to be a part of the family, taking part in family activities and celebrating special occasions. It is also a great way for students to learn about British culture whilst improving their English at the same time.

Homestay normally includes two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) with flexibility to arrange three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Homestay options

At ICP we recognise the importance of safe and comfortable accommodation. For many of our

students, studying at ICP will be the first time they have lived away from their family and friends for a

long period of time. For this reason we take the accommodation of our students very seriously and are

always here to provide help and advice if needed. There is a range of various accommodation options

available in Portsmouth, meaning that all of our students can feel that they have a ‘home away from

home’ whilst studying at ICP. This not only allows you to concentrate on your studies but also makes

your experience of living and learning in another country all the more enjoyable.

can be tailored to your needs and can include extra benefits such as a laundry service. On average, a homestay will cost between £1200 to £1600 per semester (15 weeks maximum).

ICP operates a referral service for those students wishing to take up homestay. Many students enjoy the homestay option as it provides an opportunity to live with a locally approved family and join in all that home life in the UK has to offer. You will be a part of family celebrations and have an insight into British culture at the same time as improving your English language.

Shared accommodationShared accommodation is difficult to arrange from overseas. ICP appreciates this and offers a referral service to local landlords so that you can plan your accommodation arrangements before your arrival should you wish to organise this privately.

ICP student services will be happy to facilitate communication with local landlords and, on average, shared accommodation rent will start from around £50 per week. Portsmouth boasts a range of different types of accommodation, varying from traditional terrace properties to luxurious waterfront apartments and there really is something for all tastes and budgets.

Navitas bursary and scholarshipsNavitas bursaryNavitas offers financial support in the form of family bursaries. A bursary applies where two or more students from the same family study with a Navitas member institution.

The first family member can be studying with a Navitas member institution at the same time as other family members or may have previously studied with any Navitas member institution. For the purpose of this bursary, a family member is defined as a husband, wife, brother, sister, mother, father, son, daughter or stepchild.

The bursary is granted to the second and subsequent family members who study with a Navitas member institution. The bursary is equivalent to 10% of the tuition fee for one programme only (i.e. Foundation, 1st Year Degree or Pre-Masters programme with a Navitas member institution) and is credited to the eligible student’s tuition fee account each semester (the amount being relevant to the number of units undertaken in that semester). The bursary does not apply to additional units or repeat units that may also be undertaken.

Please note:1. The Navitas bursary is not applicable to English

language programmes or any component of an English language programme offered by Navitas member institutions. Please contact the relevant Navitas member institution for more information.

2. The Navitas bursary applies to students studying at ACN, CIC, Curtin Sydney, Curtin Singapore, CRIC, Eynesbury, FIC, HIBT, ICM, ICP, ICWS, LIBT, Macquarie City Campus, MIBT, MIBT Indonesia, PDIC, PIBT, QIBT, SAIBT and SIBT only.

3. A completed application must be submitted to the Navitas institution together with supporting documents, such as birth certificate, or family card. Application form can be obtained from the Navitas institution where the student has enrolled.

Navitas academic merit scholarshipsNavitas is committed to helping students achieve their career goals by offering scholarships to outstanding students.

The scholarship applies to 50% of the tuition fee for a Navitas 1st Year Degree programme at a Navitas college or one academic semester of undergraduate studies at ACN, Curtin Sydney, Curtin Singapore or Macquarie City Campus.

To be considered for the Navitas academic merit scholarship, students must:

1. Have achieved a minimum average of 70% in their high school final year grades. Students who have completed further studies, must have achieved a minimum average of 70% in the last 12 months of their most recent studies to be eligible. Non-academic subjects including physical education, religion and languages are not included in the assessment; and

2. Have achieved a minimum English language proficiency of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent; and

3. Have a Letter of Offer from a Navitas college or Navitas operated university campus (must hold an UNCONDITIONAL OFFER by the application deadline); and

4. Be a new applicant (i.e. students who are currently studying with a Navitas member institution are not eligible).

Please note: 1. 2 x 50% scholarships are offered at all Navitas

colleges each semester.

2. Additional factors such as educational disadvantage, membership of a specific equity group and/or significantly adverse personal circumstances may be taken into account where the committee must differentiate between equally qualified applicants.

3. Students who are eligible to apply for a Navitas academic merit scholarship will be sent the scholarship application form with their Letter of Offer.

1. All fees, charges and accounts will be payable in advance as determined by ICP. Students will not be permitted to commence or continue their programme at the beginning of any semester until all outstanding fees, charges or accounts are paid.

2. Any payments not made by the due date will incur a late payment penalty of £200 and will accrue a further penalty of £50 per week until the full amount owing has been paid.

3. Fees are correct as at the time of printing. ICP reserves the right to vary its fees at any time.

4. Where a student studies less than or more than a full semester load, the student will pay the current per module fee for each module undertaken. The minimum load in any semester will be 100% of a full-time load unless otherwise approved by ICP.

5. Should it be necessary for a student to repeat a module, the full amount for that module will be charged.

6. Please note academic programmes are subject to approval.

Conditions

1. The student is expected to attend all classes and undertake all tests and examinations during a programme and abide by all rules and regulations of the College that are in force at any time, see College Policies and Regulations.

2. ICP may, by written notice, vary conditions of enrolment as necessary to comply with any law, regulation or amendment thereof, of the Government of the United Kingdom.

3. The Contract between the Applicant and ICP is governed by the laws of the United Kingdom.

4. In the event of circumstances requiring urgent medical care where it is not possible to contact the parent / guardian, ICP is authorised, as a matter of urgency, to seek and provide appropriate medical care.

5. International students must meet the minimum English language proficiency requirement for entry into the course. English proficiency will be tested; if the test reveals that the English language skills are insufficient, the student will be required to include a bridging English module in the first semester of study (free of charge) or enrol in an intensive English course prior to the commencement of studies at the discretion of ICP.

Attendance regulationsThe British system of Higher Education recognises that the ultimate responsibility for a student’s educational achievement lies with the student themselves. Moreover, as the vast majority of students in British Higher Education are over 18 years of age, they are recognised as adults and a considerable amount of freedom is extended to them so that they can regulate their own studies. While ICP (also known as the College) fully endorses the idea that students must take responsibility for their own learning, the College does have a minimum 85% Attendance Policy which aims to limit the number of those individuals who fall unnecessarily into bad habits of non-attendance or poor attendance and ensures that good study routines are established. This policy stipulates that successful progression is based on students maintaining an 85% attendance in all modules of study, and as such the policy is monitored closely. Students who do not comply will find that they will jeopardize their ability to pass module/s or their programme. ICP reserves the right to terminate the candidature to an award of any student who has a poor attendance record. ICP recognises that there is a direct link between poor attendance and poor academic performance by individuals. The College also holds the view that students who fail to attend classes are letting themselves and their sponsors down. Similarly, because education is a social experience, they are letting their classmates down. All students will be apprised of the Attendance Policy on arrival and will be required to sign off that they have read and understood its implications.

Refund policyCandidature

1. For the purposes of the Refund Policy a course is defined as one (1) semester of study in any programme of ICP.

2. If an applicant accepts a place offered by ICP and pays the tuition fees, it means a binding Contract is created between the student and ICP.

3. Notification of cancellation/withdrawal from modules, withdrawal/deferral from a programme of study must be made in writing to the College Director/Principal of ICP, see Deferment of Admission and Deferment from Studies in this document.

4. In the case of cancellation/withdrawal, the cancellation charge will be calculated as:

a. Full refund of deposit (minus any bank charges incurred) if visa application is refused.

b. 50% refund of deposit paid if cancellation is made eight (8) weeks or more before the start date and no visa application has been made.

c. No refund of deposit if cancellation is made less than eight (8) weeks prior to programme commencement or if no cancellation is made and the student fails to enrol by the stipulated deadline.

d. No refund of deposit once visa is issued.

5. Students who have their candidature to an award terminated by ICP will not be entitled to any refund of fees paid, inclusive of any accommodation deposits, fees, levies or charges . Any fee refunds will be at the discretion of ICP.

6. ICP reserves the right not to offer a programme/module previously made available at its own discretion. Where a student is unable to enrol in a similar programme/module at ICP and the enrolment is cancelled then the appropriate fees for that programme/module will be refunded. All applicants will be provided with an Acceptance of Offer of Admission Form, see www.port.ac.uk/icp on payment of tuition fees and will be required to fill this in and forward to the ICP Admission Office.

Deferment of AdmissionIf a student wishes to defer their admission to the College until a later semester, they must apply in writing to the College Director/Principal of ICP - see the Deferment of Admission Form on www.port.ac.uk/icp. Deferral will only be granted for one (1) semester unless determined otherwise by the College. If deferment is approved there is a charge of £250 at which time ICP will hold all fees already paid (at least one (1) semester’s fees must have been paid) until commencement of the required programme actually occurs. In the event the student subsequently cancels the deferment and withdraws instead, the date on which ICP received written notification of the deferment will be considered the date of withdrawal for purposes of the College’s Refund Policy. Failure to enrol within one (1) semester of the original application will result in the forfeit of all prior monies paid to ICP.

Deferment from Studies (Leave of Absence)If a student wishes to take a leave of absence from their programme they may apply in writing to the College Director/Principal of ICP no later than two (2) weeks prior to the commencement of the following semester, see the Deferment/ Withdrawal from Studies Form, www.port.ac.uk/icp. Students may be granted a leave of absence on certain grounds after the commencement of their second (2nd) semester. Students wishing to apply for a leave of absence after this time must seek an appointment with the College Director/Principal of ICP. If granted, their place may be held but all tuition fees applicable to that semester will be forfeited. A leave of absence will only be granted for one (1) semester unless determined otherwise by the College. If the absence/deferment is approved, ICP will hold all fees already paid (at least one (1) semester’s tuition fees must have beenpaid) until re-commencement of the required programme actually occurs. In the event the student subsequently cancels the deferment and withdraws instead, the date on which ICP received written notification of the leave of absence/deferment will be considered the date of withdrawal for purposes of the College’s Refund Policy. Failure to enrol within one (1) semester of the original application will result in the forfeit of all prior monies paid to ICP.
