4Eastern Michigan University 2009 Spring Football Prospectus

YPSILANTI, Mich. — When the Eastern Michigan University football team begins 2009 spring practice March 17 it will be a new beginning for the coaching staff as well as the players. The coaching staff, with the exception of one holdover from last season, will be entirely new, including at the top where Ron English takes over the reins of the football program. English, a former University of Michigan defensive coordinator and most recently the defensive coordinator at the Univer-sity of Louisville, was named EMU’s head man, Dec. 22, 2008. English hit the ground running from that point, building a complex coaching staff, adding an outstanding recruiting class, and establishing a solid base for the current players. “What we would like to do is build a team that understands what physical toughness is, and more importantly, what mental toughness is,” English said of spring practice. “Obviously, we would like to install both our offense and defense so that our players have an understanding of the concepts involved in both.

English Has 45 Lettermen For Spring Drills

“We want to teach our players how to win in terms of situations, and also the im-portance of field position and turnovers. We want to be able to run the ball and also to defend the run,” English added. English also understands the impor-tance of the evaluation process when a new staff works with a team for the first time on the field. “We want to evaluate each player in spring practice,” English said. “That is the right thing and the fair thing to do. We will evaluate each player and then make the decisions on who will be the first guys to run out on the field and so forth. “What we ultimately want to do is build a program where we feel good about playing a lot of football players. For example, we don’t want to have starters and not worry about the rest of the guys. We would like to create a program with a lot of depth. “We’re really not going in with any pre-conceived notions, but we are going in with the thought that we want to develop a team through tough, hard practices, build fundamentals, and install our phi-losophies on offense and defense.”

While this year’s spring drills will give the coaching staff and players a chance to evaluate each other, the spring is a chance for everyone to have a fresh start, including all 45 letterwinners. Headling the list of returning lettermen is the fact that 23 lettermen return on offensive and 22 on defense. The Eagles rolled up record-breaking efforts in three games last year returning to the controls in the spring will be the quarterback duo of senior Andy Schmitt (6-4, 238, Sr.-Sr.) and junior Kyle McMa-hon (6-3, 208, Jr.-Jr.). Both signal callers turned in strong performances in 2008 and will provide solid depth at that position. Schmitt started started 10 of 11 games in which he played last year and com-pleted 261-of-417 passes for 2,644 yards and 15 touchdowns. Schmitt also finished third on the team in rushing with 171 yards on 57 carries with five touchdowns on the ground. McMahon played in five games, starting twice, before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. He completed 45-of-73 passes for 574 yards and two touchdowns

in his limited time at the throttle. The top four rushers from 2008 return in 2009, led by senior Terrence Blevins (6-1, 225, Sr.-Sr.), junior Dwayne Priest (5-9, 186, Jr.-Jr.), Schmitt and sopho-more Corey Welch (5-9, 182, Jr.-So.). Blevins carried 133 times for 575 yards and a team-leading 12 touchdowns while Priest rushed 99 times for 474 yards and five scores while Welch rushed 25 times for 154 yards. The receiving corps returns almost intact from 2008, losing only senior Tyler Jones who had 75 catches for 760 yards and six touchdowns. The top receiver from last year, senior Jacory Stone (6-0 1/2, 201, Sr.-Sr.), is back after turning in 88 catches for 943 yards and three scores as a junior. Tight end Josh LeDuc (6-3, 230, Sr.-Jr.) returns after recording 32 catches for 446 yards and four touchdowns while sophomore Marvon Sanders (5-9, 160, So.-So.),28 catches 253 yards, senior Dontayo Gage (5-10, 184, Sr.-Sr.), 22 re-ceptions for 211 yards, senior DeAnthony White (5-8, 170, Sr.-Sr.), 15 catches for 156 yards, senior John Bonner (6-2, 240, Sr.-Sr.), junior Ben Thayer (6-4, 230, Sr.-Jr.), junior Tyrone Burke (6-0, 197, Sr.-Jr.), junior Sonny Paluch (6-4, 246, Sr.-Jr.) and sophomore Trey Hunter (5-11, 207, Jr.-So.) are all returning. The offensive line lost its anchor from 2008 in tackle T.J. Lang, but several returning lettermen make that area a strong one.

English Has 45 Lettermen For Spring Drills

Center Eric Davis (6-2, 280, Sr.-Jr.) returns in the middle after starting for the past two seasons. Also returning to the offensive front are guards Andy Fretz (6-2, 290, Sr.-Sr.), and Stephen Johnson (6-4, 280, Sr.-Sr.), along with tackles Bridger Buche (6-3, 294, Jr.-Jr.), Dan DeMaster (6-5, 290, Sr.-Jr.), and converted defensive lineman Drew Serruto (6-4, 275, So.-So.). The defensive side of the ball has 22 lettermen returning, but the big losses will be finding replacements for the top two tacklers last season, middle linebacker Daniel Holtzclaw, and safety Jacob Wyatt. Holtzclaw was a four-year starter who graduated as the second-leading tackler in school history. Wyatt was also a four-year letterman who had 88 stops last season. Returning on the defensive front line are Brad Ohrman (6-4, 244, Jr.-So.), Brandon Downs (6-1, 246, Sr.-Sr.), Brandon Slater (6-3, 273, Jr.-So.), Tyler Palsrok (6-4, 265, Jr.-Jr.), Ryan Kuhlman (6-4, 265, So.-So.), and Javon Reese (6-2, 230, So.-So.). Returning letterwinners in the line-backing corps include Jermaine Jenkins (6-2, 207, Sr.-Sr.), Andre Hatchett (5-11, 221, Sr.-Sr.), Marcus English (6-1, 216, Jr.-So.), Herb Waits (5-10, 184, So.-So.), Tim Fort (6-0, 214, Sr.-Jr.), Steve Brown (6-0, 220, So.-So.), Lorenzo Seaberry (5-8, 216, Sr.-Sr.), and Neal Howey (6-0, 206, Sr.-Sr.).

Leading the secondary will be a group of eight veterans, led by junior safety Ryan Downard (6-1, 201, Sr.-Jr.) and senior safety Chris May (5-10, 200, Sr.-Sr.). Other safeties returning are Kevin Long (6-1, 196, Jr.-Jr.), and Brandon Pratt (6-2, 197, Sr.-Jr.). Lettermen battling for playing time at the corner back spots will be junior Arrington Hicks (5-10, 170, Jr.-Jr.), ju-nior Derrick Hunter (5-11, 182, Sr.-Jr.), sophomore Nate Wilson (5-11, 180, Jr.-So.), and junior Mark Mitchell (5-11, 179, Sr.-Jr.). The special teams group returns virtu-ally intact, led by junior place-kicker Joe Carithers (6-0, 200, Jr.-Jr.) who made 10-of-14 field goal attempts last year. Punter Zach Johnson (6-0, 195, Sr.-Sr.), a Ray Guy Award nominee as the nation’s best punter his first two seasons, suffered through leg injuries most of 2008 and is hoping to return to his earlier form in 2009. Backing him up will be junior Patrick Treppa (5-10, 157, Sr.-Jr.). Long snapper Tyler Cochran (6-3, 240, So.-So.) returns after handling those du-ties in 2008. Returning lettermen that handled all of the kick-return duties last year, Welch and Sanders and Gage, return for spring ball, but the latter is expected to miss the entire spring after off-season surgery on a shoulder injury.

THE-GRIDIRON GROUP LENDS A HELP-ING HAND: The objective of the E-Gridiron Group is to collaborate with the EMU President’s Office, athletic director, head football coach Ron English and his staff, the EMU Student Body, and our fellow Alumni worldwide. During the past two years the EGG has helped raise more than $600,000. This is the largest amount of actual gifts received to date for a non-facility related project by a single group in EMU Athletics his-tory. This has helped provide the football program with numerous upgrades and is helping to level the playing field with the rest of the MAC. Since that official beginning in 2006, the EGG has expanded its goals and objec-tives to include not only fund-raising, but developing a broader membership pro-gram targeted at former football players, which will eventually be expanded to all family and fans of EMU football in future years. More than 250 former football play-ers have joined in just six months of the current membership drive.

EMU OPENS SEASON WITH 52-0 SHUTOUT OF INDIANA STATEEagles rack up school-record 637 yards in total offense

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan University football team used a high-powered offense and a stifling defense to hand a visiting Indiana State University squad a 52-0 shutout here Thursday night (Aug. 28) in Rynearson Stadium in the season opener for both teams. It was the first shutout for EMU since the Eagles defeated Akron, 45-0, Oct. 18, 1997. With the win, the Eagles start the season 1-0 for the first time since 2004, while Indiana State drops to 0-1 to start the 2008 season. EMU piled up a team-record 637 yards of total offense, including 413 on the ground. Senior tailback Terrence Blevins (Detroit, Mich.-Denby) racked up 176 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Eagles’ ground attack. Sophomore Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork Union) rushed for 39 yards and two scores on just eight rushing attempts. Junior quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. John’s Mich.-St. John’s) completed 15-of-20 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown through the air, while rushing for 33 yards and a score on the ground. Defensively, senior Jermaine Jenkins (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw) turned in two interceptions for the Green and White, while safety Dwayne Harrison (North Miami Beach, Fla.-North Miami Beach) picked off one as well. The Eagles yielded only 132 yards of total offense to the Sycamores, allowing ISU just seven first downs on the evening. The Eagles took little time getting on the board, taking the ball on their first pos-session and driving 80 yards in just nine plays to go up 7-0 on a Blevins four-yard carry and a Joe Carithers (Dacula, Ga.-Dacula-Palomar (Calif.) J.C.) PAT. ISU punted on its ensuing possession, giving the Eagles back the ball just over a minute later. On the first play of the drive, Blevins broke through the line, taking it 61 yards to the end zone. Another Carithers’ PAT staked the Eagles to a 14-0 lead, just eight minutes into the game. EMU continued to increase its lead in the second quarter, tacking another 14 points on the board before halftime. Senior wide receiver Tyler Jones (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) reeled in a 14-yard pass from Schmitt to give the Eagles a three-touchdown lead. Jenkins’ first interception with 9:20 to go in the second quarter set up another scoring drive for the home team, with Priest finding the end zone just over two minutes later. EMU entered halftime with a 28-0 lead, allowing the Sycamores just 95 yards of total offense, while the Eagles totaled 365 yards of their own in the first 30 minutes of the contest. Following halftime, EMU continued to roll. Schmitt rushed for his first touchdown of the season, escaping a tackle behind the line and turning it into six points. Carithers once again added the PAT to put the Eagles on top, 35-0. After forcing another three-and-out by the Sycamores, EMU put together a seven-play scoring drive, highlighted by true freshman Marvon Sanders’ (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) 51-yard run, going on top, 42-0. The Eagles put another three points on the board when Carithers hit his first EMU field goal, putting the home team on top 45-0. Redshirt freshman Jason Williams (Dayton, Ohio-Miamisburg) completed the scoring for the home team when he rushed for his first career score and Zach Johnson (Springboro, Ohio-Springboro) added the PAT, pushing the score to 52-0.

EMU DROPS ROAD DECISION AT MICHIGAN STATEEagles see record evened at 1-1 with 42-10 setback

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University football team fell to Michi-gan State University, 42-10, in front of 71,789 at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans tallied 418 yards of total offense, including 238 on the ground, compared to 342 for the Eagles. With the loss the Eagles fall to 1-1 on the young season, while the Spartans even their record at 1-1. Junior quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. Johns, Mich.-St. Johns) led the Eagles offen-sively, going 11-for-23 for 111 yards via the air, while rushing for 46 yards. Sophomore quarterback Kyle McMahon (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) was also3-of-8 for 108 yards. Senior tailback Terrence Blevins (Detroit, Mich.-Denby) led the Eagles’ rushing attack with nine carries for 54 yards. Defensively, senior safety Jacob Wyatt (Lansing, Mich.-Sexton) led Eastern with a game-high 13 tackles, while senior linebacker Daniel Holtzclaw (Enid, Okla.-Enid) added12 tackles. The Spartans opened up the game on a 14-play, 69-yard drive, however the drive turned disastrous as Javon Ringer fumbled in the end zone, and it was recovered by EMU’s Jermaine Jenkins (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw) for the touchback. EMU was un-able to capitalize though, as MSU was able to force a quick three-and-out situation. Neither side was able to get their offense in gear until the 1:46 mark of the first quarter, when Ringer bounced off a few would-be tacklers for the four-yard touchdown scamper. Brett Swenson added the PAT to make it 7-0. The MSU points were the first the Eagles had surrendered this season, after shutting out Indiana State University, 52-0, in the season opener last week (Aug. 28) in Ypsilanti. Eastern quickly responded with a touchdown of its own on the strength on back-to-back big play performances. Blevins rolled off a 40-yard run to the MSU 40-yard line before Schmitt found a streaking Jacory Stone (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) for a 38-yard pick-up down to the two yard line. Three plays later, Schmitt capped the six play drive with a three-yard touchdown run with 14:52 to go in the second quarter. Joe Carithers (Dacula, Ga.-Palomar J.C.) tacked on a successful PAT to knot it at 7-7. Michigan State was able to crack the scoreboard with 5:37 left in the half, as Ringer rushed up the middle for a six-yard touchdown run to complete the five play, 28 yard scoring drive. The Spartan PAT was good to make it 14-7. MSU would tack on Ringer’s third rushing touchdown of the half with 1:05 left in the period to put the host Spartans up 21-7 as the teams headed into the lockerroom for the intermission. Following the break, the momentum started to swing back in the favor of Eastern Michigan, as the Eagles started their second possession on the half on their own three-yard line. Schmitt was able to orchestrate a 13-play, 93 yard drive down to the MSU four-yard line. Carithers lined up for the field goal try, but instead it was a fake by holder Ryan Downard (Lima, Ohio-Shawnee), however, he was stopped at the one-yard line for a turnover-on-downs. Earlier in the drive, Blevins rushed for a four-yard touchdown score but the play was for naught as the Green and White was flagged for holding. The Spartans would quickly capitalize on the missed EMU scoring opportunity. In workman fashion, MSU would go 99 yards on a scoring drive that wrapped up when Ringer found pay dirt for the fourth time with 2:08 left in the third quarter. The MSU extra point was true to make it 28-7. Eastern Michigan would get no closer, however, as the Spartans captured the 32-point victory, 42-10.

TURNOVERS DOOM EAGLES IN MAC OPENEREagles lose three fumbles and have two interceptions in 41-17 setback

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University football team fell, 41-17, to the visiting University of Toledo in a Mid-American Conference West Division football game played in a steady downpour here Saturday, Sept. 13, in Rynearson Stadium. Toledo, now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in MAC action, broke open a close 14-7 first-half lead by scoring 27 unanswered point in the third quarter and went on to record the 41-17 victory. With the loss the Eagles fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. Sophomore quarterback Kyle McMahon (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) came in to relieve redshirt-junior signal-caller Andy Schmitt (St. Johns, Mich.-St. Johns) to lead the Eagles offensively, going 11-of -18 for 128 yards via the air, while rushing for 59 yards. Sophomore running back Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork Union) led the Eagles’ rushing effort, going 80 yards on 13 attempts, while senior tailback Terrence Blevins (Detroit, Mich.-Denby) ran for both of EMU’s touchdowns. Defensively, safety Ryan Downard (Lima, Ohio-Shawnee) had four tackles and an interception. For the Rockets, Aaron Opelt went 8-of -18 for 114 yards, while DeJuane Collins rushed for 168 yards on 19 attempts. The Rockets opened the scoring on their first possession, taking advantage of a three-play, 72-yard drive less than four minutes into the game, taking an early 7-0 lead. Neither team could find its rhythm in the pouring rain, as they combined for three turnovers in three successive plays. After forcing a fumble, Schmitt threw an interception, giving the Rockets the ball right back. His counterpart, Opelt, returned the favor, as Downard picked off his first pass of the year, just seconds after the Rockets took over. The two teams continued to exchange punts, as neither side could get their offense in gear until 5:47 when the Eagles got their first down of the game, fol-lowing three consecutive rushes by Blevins. The Rockets capitalized on a bad snap by the Eagles, carrying the ball 54-yards to the EMU one-yard line. Collins rushed in for the score, putting Toledo up 14-0 after a Steigerwald PAT. Eastern cut the lead to seven after a nine-play, 47-yard drive that ended on a one-yard Blevins run into the end zone and a Joe Carithers (Dacula, Ga.-Dacula-Palomar (Calif.) J.C.) PAT with 6:00 remaining in the second half. UT went to the locker room with a 14-7 lead. Toledo found its offensive groove in the third quarter, putting together three scoring drives within the first seven minutes to turn a seven-point game into a 34-7 lead. After finally forcing a Rocket punt, the Eagles fumbled the ball, giving UT the ball at the EMU 17. The Rockets found the end zone in two plays, extend-ing the lead to 41-7. After being shut out in the third quarter, the Eagles were able to put three points on the board when Carithers nailed a 30-yard field goal with 12:18 remain-ing in the game. With 3:44 remaining in the contest, Blevins rushed two yards for his second score of the game, cutting the deficit, 41-17. Eastern Michigan would get no closer though, as the Rockets captured the victory, 41-17.

EAGLES DROP OFFENSIVE SHOOTOUT AT MARYLANDBoth teams roll up more than 450 yards

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A pair of interceptions and a blocked punt proved costly for the Eastern Michigan University football team, as the Eagles dropped a 51-24 decision to the University of Maryland Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium. The Eagles racked up 453 yards of total offense, but it all came for naught as Maryland was able to capitalize on the EMU miscues. With the win Maryland upped its record to 3-1 on the year, while Eastern Michigan dropped to 1-3. Making his first start of the season due to an injury to junior Andy Schmitt (St. John’s, Mich.-St. John’s), sophomore quarterback Kyle McMahon (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) threw for a season-best 278 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, McMahon also scampered for 29 yards on 10 attempts. Junior wide-out Jacory Stone (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) hauled in nine catches for 76 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore tight end Josh LeDuc (Canton, Mich.-Canton) caught four balls for 59 yards and a score. On the ground, senior Terrence Blevins (Detroit, Mich.-Denby) racked up 61 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts. The Eagles found themselves in an early hole as the Terrapins blocked sophomore Pat-rick Treppa’s (Livonia, Mich.-Stevenson) punt and returned it to the EMU 10-yard line. However, the Eastern defense stood up to the challenge of the sudden change of field posi-tion, holding Maryland to just a field goal with 11:04 left in the first quarter. On the ensuing EMU possession, McMahon was able to march the offense 75 yards in six plays down the field to the UM five-yard line. But on 1st-and-goal, McMahon’s toss was intercepted in the end zone, halting the Eagles’ scoring opportunity. Maryland would capi-talize on that miscue, going 80-yards in just 10 plays for the score that was capped off by a one-yard touchdown plunge by Morgan Green. A Obi Egekeze PAT followed to make it 10-0 with 2:45 to play in the first quarter. After another McMahon interception, UM’s Green would sprint 20 yards for the touch-down to complete the five-play, 47-yard Maryland scoring drive. Another Egekeze PAT was true to push the deficit to 17, 17-0, with 11:41 remaining in the second quarter. Despite playing from behind, EMU continued to move the football. After starting on its own 20-yard line, McMahon marched the Green and White 73 yards to the UM seven-yard line Blevins was able to get EMU on the scoreboard, with his fifth touchdown of the year, a seven-yard touchdown rush with 5:08 left in the half. A sophomore Joe Carithers (Dacula, Ga.-Dacula (Palomar J.C.)) PAT sailed through the uprights to make it 17-7. But Maryland promptly answered with a 63 yard kickoff return to give the Terps great field position. On the very next play, quarterback Chris Turner found a streaking Darrius Heyward-Bay for the 32-yard touchdown strike with 4:49 showing on the clock. A 13-yard touchdown reception by LeDuc from McMahon just before half pulled EMU even closer. The 80 yard, 11-play drive was capped with another Carithers PAT try, made it 24-10 with :44 seconds left before the intermission. Following the break the potent Terrapin offense tacked on another touchdown just 1:33 into the third quarter, as Turner hooked up with tight end Dan Gronkowski for the four-yard touchdown reception to make it 31-10. But the Eagles would again respond with a score of their own, as Carithers would knock through a 23-yard field goal to make it 31-17 with 7:15 showing on the third quarter clock. Maryland returned the favor with a 21-yard Egekeze field goal on the ensuing possession to run the score to 34-17 with 4:19 still left in the third period. The defenses for both sides would then stiffen up, as neither was able to score until Mary-land’s Egekeze banged through a 33-yard field goal attempt with 11:46 to play in the fourth quarter. On the following possession EMU continued to rack up the yardage, as McMahon drove the Eagles back into the red zone. The sophomore signal caller then found Stone in the cor-ner on the end zone for the two-yard touchdown strike with 8:03 left. The PAT was good to make it 37-24. Maryland would add two late touchdowns to make it 51-24.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS SPOILS EMU HOMECOMINGHuskies blank eagles, 37-0

YPSILANTI, Mich. — A visiting Northern Illinois University football team spoiled Homecoming for the Eastern Michigan University foot-ball team here Saturday afternoon, Sept. 27, in Rynearson Stadium in a Mid-American Conference West Division battle, defeating the Eagles by a score of 37-0. Northern Illinois rolled up 339 yards in total offense and raced to a 21-0 halftime lead and came back with a strong defensive effort in the second half to post the 37-0 victory. The shutout was the first for an EMU squad since this same NIU team handed the Eagles a 27-0 shut-out in the final game of the 2006 season, Nov. 24. The loss drops EMU to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in MAC action while Northern Illinois improves 2-2 overall and 1-1 in MAC action. On offense, junior quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. John’s Mich.-St. John’s) went 21-of-37 for 140 yards in the air while rushing for 27 yards on the ground. Junior wide receiver Jacory Stone (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) hauled in nine passes for 98 yards, his second consecutive game with nine receptions while his 98 yards was a career best. Senior tailback Terrence Blevins (Detroit, MIch.-Denby) gained 32 yards on nine carries for EMU. Defensively, the Eagles were led by senior linebacker Daniel Holtz-claw (Enid, Okla.-Enid) with 15 stops on the afternoon, moving him to third on the EMU career list for tackles with 376. Safety Jacob Wyatt (Lansing, Mich.-Sexton) recorded seven tackles. The Huskies racked up 235 yards rushing and four touchdowns on the ground, led by Me’co Brown’s 111 yards and one touchdown. Justin Anderson rushed for 37 yards and a score, while DeMarcus Grady and Marcus Perez accounted for the other two NIU rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Dan Nicholson completed 11-of-15 passes for 92 yards and one aerial score. NIU raced out to an early 14-0 lead after the first quarter of play and never looked back. The Eagle offense was slowed after sophomore sig-nal caller Kyle McMahon (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Notre Dame Prep) went down with an injury during the first series. The Huskies scored in every quarter, including a late safety, putting the final margin at 37-0. Next up for the Eagles is a trip to Bowling Green, Saturday, Oct. 4 to take on the Falcons. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at Doyt Perry Stadium.

EMU SPOILS BGSU’s HOMECOMING WITH 24-21 VICTORYEMU scores with 36 seconds left to record the win

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — The Eastern Michigan University football team came up with some last-second heroics to record a 24-21 win over Bowling Green State University here Saturday afternoon, Oct. 4, in Mid-American Conference cross-divisional action before a Homecoming crowd of 16,217 in Doyt Perry Stadium. Trailing by a 21-17 margin, the Eagles moved 77 yards in six plays and scored the win-ning points on a 16-yard scoring pass from junior quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. Johns, Mich.-St. Johns) to senior wide receiver Tyler Jones (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) with just 36 seconds left in the game. Sophomore place-kicker Joe Carithers (Dacula, Ga.-Dacula-Palomar (Calif.) J.C.) added the PAT kick for the 24-21 EMU advantage. The win-ning touchdown was set up by a big EMU defensive stand as the Eagles forced a Bowling Green punt, getting the offense the ball back with 1:21 left on the clock. The home team still had a chance to tie the game after that late EMU score, but a 52-yard field goal attempt by Sinisa Vrvilo was short and to the left as time expired. The win was extra special for EMU head coach Jeff Genyk, a 1982 Bowling Green State University graduate and a former quarterback for the Falcons. With the win the Eagles improve to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in MAC action while Bowling Green falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in league play. The victory also snapped the Eagles’ nine-game losing skid to the Falcons, and marked the first EMU victory in Bowling Green, Ohio since Nov. 12, 1988. Schmitt directed the EMU offense to 410 total yards on 68 plays. He completed 21-of-29 passes for 251 yards and one touchdown while Jones led all rushers with 13 carries for 60 yards while taking the direct snap from center during the game. Jones spent the rest of the game as a wide receiver. Sophomore tailback Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-William Fleming-Fork Union Military) added 45 yards on 11 rushes. The EMU defense was outstanding all day and was paced by senior Daniel Holtzclaw (Enid, Okla.-Enid) with 10 tackles while Spenser Smith (Detroit, Mich.-Mackenzie) re-cord five tackles and three tackles-for-loss of 14 yards. The Falcons opened the scoring on a six-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Sheehan to tight end Jimmy Scheidler with 1:18 left in the first quarter. Vrvilo added the PAT for a 7-0 lead. The Eagles fought back to knot the game at seven-all, capping a six-play, 65-yard drive on a one-yard touchdown run by senior tailback Terrence Blevins (Detroit, Mich.-Den-by) followed by the PAT kick by Carithers with 2:34 left in the second quarter. Eastern took its first lead of the game, 10-7, on a 28-yard field goal by Carithers on the first drive of the second half at the 9:40 mark. The Eagles drove the ball 60 yards in 10 plays with Carithers providing the go-ahead points. BGSU came right back on its first possession of the second half to regain the lead, 14-10, on a 46-yard scoring toss from Sheehan to wide receiver Adrian Hodges. Vrvilo added the PAT kick. The Eastern offense continued to use the clock to its advantage, answering with a 13-play, 78-yard touchdown drive that took 7:27 with Priest capping the drive with a 12-yard scoring run. Carithers added the PAT to once again give the Eagles the lead, 17-14, with 9.2 seconds left in the third quarter. Bowling Green would add a Sheehan eight-yard run with 5:11 left before Eastern would pull off the late-game magic on the Schmitt to Jones pass to win the game. EMU will head out of the conference next weekend, Oct. 11, for a non-conference date with Army in West Point, N.Y.

LATE RALLY LEADS ARMY PAST EMUEagles can’t hold first-half advantage in 17-13 loss

WEST POINT, N.Y. — The Eastern Michigan University football team dropped a 17-13 decision to the United States Military Academy Saturday afternoon, Oct. 11, in non-conference action here at Blaik Field in Michie Stadium. The Black Knights used their triple-option attack to rack up 341 yards on the ground to overcome a 13-7 halftime deficit. The Eagles had a pair of late fourth quarter drives in an attempt to rally for the win, but the Army defense stood up to the challenge to claim the victory. With the win Army ups its record to 2-4 on the year, while Eastern Michigan drops to 2-5. Junior quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. Johns, Mich.-St. Johns) was 12-of-30 passing for a total of 138 yards. Junior wideout Jacory Stone (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) added four catches for 17 yards to give him 101 career catches and 996 career receiving yards. Sophomore tight end Josh LeDuc (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) also caught two passes for 40. On the ground, sophomore Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming-Fork Union Academy) totalled 118 yards on 17 carries on the afternoon. Senior Terrence Blevins (Detroit, Mich.-Denby) also tallied 17 yards and a touchdown on six attempts. For Army, fullback Collin Mooney carried the ball 29 times for 299 yards while running back Wesley McMahand added three carries for 46 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Chip Bowden ran the ball 12 times for 32 yards and a score while going 0-for-3 via the air. Army had zero pass-ing yards in the entire game. Army jumped on the board first, as the Black Knights opened the game marching 61 yards in just two plays. The drive was capped with a 13-yard touchdown scamper by McMahand with 13:07 showing on the first quarter clock. Matthew Campbell’s PAT was good to make it 7-0. The triple-option attack of Army continued to rack up the yards on the ground, as Mooney sprinted 67 yards to set up a great scoring opportunity midway through the opening period. However, it would all be for naught as senior linebacker Daniel Holtzclaw (Enid, Okla.-Enid ), who had a game-high 12 tackles, stopped Bowden on fourth-and-inches to force a turnover on downs at the EMU 12-yard line with 4:08 left in the first quarter. After a few stalled drives to start the contest, Eastern Michigan was able to get the offense in gear on its third possession. Schmitt would direct an 11-play, 63-yard drive from deep in its own territory, but the drive would stall at the Army 25-yard line. Sophomore placekicker Joe Carith-ers (Dacula, Ga.Dacula (Palomar J.C.) would knock through a career-long 43 yard field goal to cut the deficit to four, 7-3, with 13:26 left in the second period. Following a quick three-and-out for the Black Knights, Priest would roll off a 20-yard dart into Army territory. Six plays later, Blevins would bounce off a few defenders before finding paydirt with 7:49 left before half. Carithers would tack on the point-after kick to make it 10-7. Army would turn the ball over with 5:37 showing on the clock near midfield, when quarter-back Bowden’s option toss was off target and recovered by senior Dwayne Harrison (North Miami Beach, Fla.-North Miami Beach). EMU was unable to advance the ball into the red zone, as Carithers would have to chip through a 38-yard field goal to make it 13-7 with 3:04 left. Following intermission, the Black Knights would once again crack into the scoring column. Mooney would break loose, scooting for a 54-yard gain down to the EMU four-yard line. But the EMU defense would stand up, stopping Mooney just short of the goal line to force a field-goal try. The 18-yard attempt for Campbell was true to make it 13-10 with 10:25 to play in the third period. Eastern Michigan would answer with a long drive of its own, marching 68 yards in nine plays before the drive would falter at the Army five-yard line. The Eagles had back-to-back opportuni-ties to scores, but two of Schmitt’s passes were knocked away from their intended targets in the end zone. Carithers would come on for the chip shot 22-yard field goal attempt with 5:33 remain-ing but the try was blocked by Victor Ugenyi. Army’s rushing attack continued to move the chains on its next possession, calling for the run on 13-of-14 plays, capping the 80-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown run by Bowden. Campbell added the PAT to give Army its final four-point margin, 17-13. Army would ratchet up the defensive intensity on EMU’s next possession to force the quick three-and-out. But the Black Knights would have trouble holding on to the football, turning the ball over with less than nine minutes of clock still showing. However, head coach Jeff Genyk’s crew count not cash in on the break, as Schmitt was sacked on third-and-six at midfield. Junior Zach Johnson (Springboro, Ohio-Springboro) punted the ball away with 6:58 as the Knights took over at their own 17-yard line. Once again the defense would stand strong, forcing Army to give the ball back to the Eagles via a punt with 3:34 left. Needing to go 83 yards to score, Schmitt found Blevins for a 14-yard pass reception up to the EMU 30-yard line. Two plays later Schmitt nearly found a streaking Stone down at the Army 30-yard line but the pass was just inches too long. Then on third-and-five, the toss to LeDuc was broken up to force the Eagles’ hand with 2:10 to go. Schmitt’s pass was knocked down at the line of scrimmage to return the ball to Army with 2:04 showing. Army continued to attack via the rush but came up just short on a critical fourth down at the EMU 26-yard line turning the ball back over to the Green and White with 1:40 on the clock. Just as last week in the victory at Bowling Green, the Eagles would have to make a last ditch drive to pull out the win. But unfortunately the result would not be the same, as EMU was unable to convert on a fourth-and-13 with 59 seconds left at the EMU 23-yard line.

EAGLES LOSE HEARTBREAKER ON BIZARRE PLAYEMU blocks last-minute field goal only to lose game

YPSILANTI, Mich. — One of the most bizarre plays in Eastern Michigan University football history cost the Eagles a chance at victory here Saturday afternoon, Oct. 18, in Rynearson Stadium in a Mid-American Conference game against a visiting University of Akron squad. The Eagles came from behind to take a 35-34 lead with 03:49 left when junior quar-terback Andy Schmitt (St. Johns, Mich.-St. Johns) found sophomore tight end Josh LeDuc (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) for a six-yard touchdown pass. Joe Carithers (Dac-ula, Ga.-Dacula-Palomar (Calif,) J.C.) added the tie-breaking PAT kick to give Eastern a shot at the win. Akron then drove to the EMU nine-yard line and faced fourth and two yards to go with just 00:30 left on the clock. The Zips elected to kick a field goal, but a 26-yard field goal by Igor Iveljic was blocked by LeDuc. The blocked kick bounced back to Akron holder Andy Hildreth and he ran for a four-yard gain, recording the first down, giving Akron possession at the five-yard line. The Zips did not waste that sudden turnaround and scored the game-winning touchdown with just 14 ticks left. Dennis Kennedy rushed for the four-yard touchdown and also scored on a two-point conversion run to make the final, 42-35. EMU received the ensuing kickoff and ran off one play before losing the ball on a fumble as the final gun sounded. With the win, the Zips even their overall record at 4-4 and 2-2 in MAC action. The Eagles fall to 2-6 and 1-3, respectively. Schmitt led the Eagles with 22 completions in 34 pass attempts for 258 yard includ-ing three touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Jacory Stone (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) caught a career-high 109 receiving yards on seven catches. The three touchdown passes were evenly spread out as Tyler Jones (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville), Marvon Sanders (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) and LeDuc each had a receiving score. Senior running back Terrence Blevins (Detroit, Mich.-Denby) led the ground attack, going 91 yards on 21 rushes while scoring twice. For Akron, Kennedy carried the ball 25 times for a career-high 277 yards. Signal caller Chris Jacquemain went 11-of-19, passing for 208 yards. Akron jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the game before the Eagles cut it to three, 10-7, on a three-yard run by Blevins followed by the PAT kick from Carithers. EMU then tried an on-side kick that was recovered Akron and the Zips scored on the next play for a 17-7 advantage. A five-yard pass from Schmitt to Jones and a PAT by Carithers added seven for the Eagles to make it 17-14 with 4:17 showing on the second-quarter clock. Akron closed out the half with a touchdown and PAT to make it 24-14. Following intermission, head coach Jeff Genyk’s crew cracked the scoring column with Blevins scoring from one-yard out to cut it to 24-21 at the 09:06 mark of the third quarter. The visitors then went up by 13, 34-21, with a touchdown and field goal before the Eagles stormed back for 10 straight points, on two Schmitt touchdown passes, the first a 19-yard pass to Sanders and the second a six-yard toss to LeDuc. Carithers added both PAT kicks. The LeDuc score put the Eagles up by one, 35-34, setting up the late-game scram-ble. Eastern will head to Muncie, Ind. Saturday, Oct. 25, for a Mid-American Conference West Division matchup with the national ranked Ball State University Cardinals. BSU is undefeated at 7-0 and ranked 22nd in the nation.

EAGLES FALL TO NATIONALLY RANKED CARDINALS20th/22nd Ranked BSU records a 38-16 MAC West Divison win

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Eastern Michigan University football team fell to nationally ranked Ball State University, 38-16, here at Scheumann Stadium Saturday afternoon, Oct. 25, in a Mid-American Conference West Division game. The Cardinals, ranked 20th in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll and 22nd in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, racked up 245 yards in the air against the Eagles’ defense which entered the game ranked best in the MAC versus the pass. EMU entered the game giving up just 151.9 yards per contest, but saw the Cardi-nals jump out to an early 10-0 lead before expanding that margin to 24 points, 24-0, midway through the third quarter. EMU was able to tack on a pair of touchdowns and a 37-yard field goal in the third and fourth quarters, but the deficit was just too much to overcome. With the loss the Eagles fall to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in MAC action while the Cardinals remain perfect at 8-0 (4-0 MAC). Today’s contest was the Eagles’ first versus a ranked team since a 55-0 setback to No. 14th ranked University of Michigan, Sept. 17, 2005. Junior quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. Johns, Mich.-St. Johns) led the Eagles of-fensively, going 28-for-49 for a career-high 309 yards via the air, including two touch-down passes. Entering the contest, Schmitt’s previous best passing yardage total was 258 just last week, Oct. 18, versus the University of Akron. Senior wide receiver Tyler Jones (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) picked up his sec-ond career 100-yard receiving game, catching 11 balls for 120 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore tight end Josh LeDuc (Canton, Mich.-Canton) added four catches for 92 yards and a score. Junior quarterback Nate Davis turned in a complete game of Ball State, passing for 241 yard on 31 attempts and a pair touchdowns. He also rushed for 34 yards while adding a four yard touchdown reception. Ball State opened the scoring with a 27-yard Ian McGarvey field goal at the 2:31 mark of the first quarter. The Cardinals’ offense would add a second-quarter touch-down for a 10-0 lead. Ball State had one more shot to tack some points on the board just before the in-termission as Davis drove the Cardinals inside the EMU 25-yard line. But on second down, Daniel Holtzclaw (Enid, Okla.-Enid) tipped a Davis pass allowing sophomore safety Kevin Long (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) to collect his first career interception with 22 seconds left in the quarter. Schmitt took a knee as the team headed into the locker room with Ball State clinging to a 10-0 lead. In the third quarter the Cardinals increased its edge to 17-0 and made it 24-0 in the third quarter. EMU was then able to string together its best drive of the contest late in the third quarter, as Schmitt found Jacory Stone (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) for a seven-yard touchdown strike as time expired in the period. Sophomore kicker Joe Carithers’ (Dacula, Ga.-Dacula (Palomar J.C.) PAT was true to cut the deficit to 17, 24-7. Ball State then responded with another touchdown on a 52-yard scamper by Mi-Quale Lewis with the PAT making it 31-7 with 14:29 left in the game. Schmitt marched the Eagles back down the field in 14 plays covering 71 yards capped with a five yard touchdown toss to Jones for a touchdown. The two-point con-version pass was incomplete, making the score 31-13 with 9:08 remaining. BSU tacked on another seven-points before Carithers closed out the day’s scoring with a 37-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 22 points, 38-16, with 3:10 left.

EAGLES DROP 31-10 DECISION AT WESTERN MICHIGANEagles fail to convert red-zone chances in loss

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University football team could not take advantage of trips to the red zone and dropped a 31-10 decision to Western Michigan University here Saturday, Nov. 1, in a Mid-American Conference West Division game played in Waldo Stadium. The Eagles made it to the red zone four times, but scored just 10 points on those chances to fall to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in MAC action while Western improves to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in league action. On offense, junior quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. John’s Mich.-St. John’s) went 21-of-35 for 272 yards in the air. Sophomore Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-William Fleming-Fork Union) and senior tailback Terrence Blevins (Detroit, MIch.-Denby) led the Eagles in rushing with 52 yards each while Blevins scored the Eagles’ lone touchdown on a 19-yard run. Defensively, the Eagles were led by senior linebacker Jermaine Jenkins (Sag-inaw, Mich.-Saginaw) with 11 stops on the afternoon, while safety Jacob Wyatt (Lansing, Mich.-Sexton) added nine tackles. Western opened the scoring on its first offensive possession of the game when Hiller found a streaking Juan Nunez for a 45-yard touchdown pass at the 10:35 mark of the first quarter. John Potter added the PAT kick for the 7-0 lead. The Broncos made it 10-0 with 1:10 left in the first quarter when place-kicker John Potter booted a 32-yard field goal. Eastern cut the Wester deficit to three, 10-7, when Blevins burst through the left side of the line for a 19-yard scoring run. Joe Carithers (Dacula, Ga.-Dacula-Palmomar J.C.) added the PAT kick for the Eagles. Western answered with 10:00 on the clock on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Hiller to Schneider Julien as Potter added the PAT for a 17-7 WMU advan-tage. With Western threatening to score from the one-yard line late in the first half the EMU defense came up with the first of two huge efforts. Senior middle line-backer Daniel Holtzclaw (Enid, Okla.-Enid) forced a fumble that was recovered by senior defensive tackle Josh Hunt (Jackson, Mich.-Lumen Christi) with just 00:55 left on the clock. A 15-yard WMU penalty gave Eastern the ball at the16-yard line. EMU moved it down near midfield before getting stopped on downs. Western looked like it might get in position to score at that point, but safety Chris May (Jupiter, Fla.-Dwyer) forced a fumble and recovered it at the EMU 20-yard line. The Eagles took a knee on the next play to end the half with the Broncos on top, 17-7. Carithers opened the second half scoring on a 28-yard field goal at the 1:21 mark after Spenser Smith (Detroit, Mich.-Mackenzie) forced a Bronco fumble which was recovered by Arrington Hicks (Orlando, Fla.-Edgewater). The score pulled the Eagles within seven, 17-10. Western would bounce right back, however, going up 24-10, on a one-yard run by Brandon West with 13:16 left in the game. The Broncos would add one more score in the game, on a 34-yard pass from Hiller to Branden Ledbetter. Eastern, meanwhile, moved it down to the Bronco two-yard line twice late in the game, but failed to convert on its chances.

EAGLES FALL IN SHOOTOUT AT TEMPLELoss spoils junior quarterback Andy Schmitt’s record-wrecking effort

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Eastern Michigan University football team turned in a record-breaking passing attack, but it wasn’t enough for the Eagles as they fell to Temple University, 55-52 here Saturday, Nov. 22, in a Mid-American Conference game played in Lincoln Financial Field, home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles football squad. Trailing by a 55-45 count, the Eagles marched downfield to score on a two-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. John’s Mich.-St. John’s) to cut the margin to three points with just 37 seconds left in the game. An EMU onside kick failed on the ensuing kickoff, allowing the host team to escape with the victory. The loss drops EMU to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in MAC action. Temple improves to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in league play. The loss spoiled a record-setting day for the EMU offense as Schmitt set an NCAA FBS record for passes attempted without an interception with 76 complet-ed during the game. He also established school records for pass completions (50), pass attempts (76), and passing yards (448) to go along with three touchdown passes and two rushing scores. Junior wide receiver Jacory Stone (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) caught a per-sonal-best 18 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown while senior wide receiver Tyler Jones (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) also turned in a record-smashing effort, hauling in 17 passes for 185 yards, both personal bests, to go along with three touchdowns. Quarterback Adam DiMichele led the Owls, completing 21-of-37 passes for 370 yards and six touchdowns. His favorite target, Bruce Francis, caught nine passes for 125 yards and four touchdowns. Eastern struck first in the game, scoring on its initial offensive possession of the game when the Eagles marched 57 yards on six plays with Schmitt hitting Jones for a 15-yard touchdown pass at the 13:11 mark of the first quarter. Place-kicker Joe Carithers (Dacula, Ga.-Dacula-Palmomar J.C.) added the PAT kick to make it 7-0. The Owls roared back to take a 24-21 lead into halftime intermission when DiMichele connected with Joe Jones for an eight-yard touchdown pass with Brownell adding the PAT with just 47 seconds left on the clock. Schmitt completed 27-of-41 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, connecting with Tyler Jones nine times for 90 yards and two scores. Schmitt’s counterpart, DiMichele, went 13-of-23 for 221 and three touchdeowns in the first 30 minutes. Both teams combined for 35 points over the final 12 minutes to set up the dramatic finish. The Eagles will close out the 2008 season with a Friday, Nov. 28, home contest against the Chippewas of Central Michigan. Game time for that post-Thanksgiv-ing game has been changed from 1 p.m. to noon in Rynearson Stadium.

EAGLES TURN IN RECORD-BREAKING EFFORT IN SEASON FINALE WIN OVER CMUQB Andy Schmitt and WR Tyler Jones set or tie NCAA marks in “Senior Day” victoryYPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University football team turned on the offense here Friday, Nov. 28, to record a thrilling 56-52 record-breaking effort in a Mid-American Conference 2est Division victory over a visiting Central Michigan University team here Friday, Nov. 28, af-ternoon on Senior Day in Rynearson Stadium. The win allowed Eastern to keep possession of the Michigan Mid-American Conference Tro-phy sponsored by the state of Michigan Athletic Hall of Fame. The trophy is awarded annually to the Michigan MAC team with the best record in games played between Eastern, Western and Central Michigan. Eastern, which won the trophy last year, defeated CMU this year while CMU defeated WMU. The team that currently holds the trophy retains it in case of a tie. The win closed out Eastern Michigan’s season at 3-9 overall and 2-6 in MAC play. The loss drops CMU to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in MAC action. The victory also closed out head coach Jeff Ge-nyk’s five-year EMU career on a positive note. It was announced Monday, Nov. 22, that Genyk’s contract would not be renewed at the conclusion of the 2008 season. EMU redshirt junior quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. Johns, Mich.-St. Johns) set one NCAA record and established five EMU marks on the way to completing 58-of-80 passes for 516 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Eagles to victory. Schmitt’s 58 completions broke the NCAA mark of 56 set by Jarrod DeGeorgia of Wayne State (Neb.) vs. Drake, Nov. 9, 1996. All five of his EMU records broke his own marks, including 58 completions, 80 attempts, 516 passing yards, 89 total offensive plays and 554 yards in total offense. Senior wide receiver Tyler Jones (Bel-leville, Mich.-Belleville) caught an EMU single-game record 23 passes for 170 yards. That 23 reception mark tied UNLV’s Randy Gatewood for the FBS NCAA record. Gatewood caught his 23 passes against Idaho, Sept. 17, 1994. EMU place-kicker Joe Carithers (Dcaula, Ga.-Dacula-Palomar J.C.) tied an EMU single-game record with eight PAT kicks. For the game the Eagles rolled up a school record for offensive plays with 105 for a second-best 610 total offensive yards. Junior quarterback Dan LeFevour paced the Chippewas with 22 completions on 38 at-tempts for 378 yards and four scores. CMU wide receiver Antonio Brown caught seven balls for 172 yards and one touchdown. For the second game in a row the Eagles opened the scoring with a touchdown on its first offensive possession. This time around the Eagles marched 70 yards on 14 plays capped off by an eight yard run by Schmitt at the 10:18 mark of the first quarter. Carithers added the PAT kick for a 7-0 EMU lead. From that point on the first half concluded with plenty of offensive fireworks on the field and some off-field activity as well. The two teams combined for 744 yards in total offense and 77 total points with the Eagles holding the 42-35 lead going into the locker room. In the first half, Schmitt completed a whopping 38 passes in 52 attempts for 354 yards and a second-best EMU single game mark of five touchdown passes. Jones turned in 14 receptions for 118 yards in the first half. CMU QB LeFevour completed 13-of-19 passes for 276 yards and four touchdown throws. Eastern’s team was hit with two 15-yard penalty flags after confronting the Chippewas at midfield after the first half gun sounded and the Eagles had to boot the second-half kickoff from its own eight-yard line and Central’s first drive started on the EMU 47-yard line. Central could not take full advantage of that field possession, however, settling for a Aguila 30-yard field goal at the 12:51 mark of the third quarter, cutting EMU’s advantage to four, 42-38. The Chips grabbed their first lead of the game three minutes later when Justin Hoskins sprinted 17 yards through the EMU defense for a 45-42 CMU lead with 9:30 left in the third quarter. Eastern came right back to take a 48-45 lead with 6:48 remaining in the third quarter on a one-yard run by Terrence Blevins (Detroit, Mich.-Finney). The Eagles increased their lead to 11, 56-45, with just 50 seconds left in the third quarter when Blevins added another one-yard run. The Chippewas would tack on another score with 13:56 left in the game when Ontario Sneed rushed 38 yards for a score, making it 56-52. The Eastern defense came up with a big stop late in the game when senior defensive end Spenser Smith (Detroit, Mich.-Mackenzie) stopped LeFevour two yards short on a fourth-and-three from the EMU 16-yard line with 5:05 left in the game. CMU turned in one last effort to win the game when they regained possession on their own 29-yard line with 1:45 left in the contest. The Eagles’ defense forced four straight LeFevour incompletions to get the ball back with 1:25 left. Eastern ran out the clock from that point to preserve the win.
