The Indian Construction Industry – Some Facts The construction sector in India is the secondlargest contributor to the national economycontributing on an average 6.30 percent of theGDP (Gross Domestic Product). The sectoraccounts for about 38% of gross investment andabout 45% of India's total infrastructure costs.According to reliable sources, US$175 billion wasspent on construction in India in 2007 aftergrowing 156% since 2005. Out of US$175 billion,US$140 billion was spent on non-residential, andthe remaining US$35 billion was spent onresidential construction. Construction spendingis expected to increase to US$370 billion by theend of 2013, with residential totalling US$63billion and non-residential registering US$307billion. This represents a compound annualgrowth rate (CAGR) of 13.3%. The constructionsector is also the second largest employer in thecountry following agriculture, employing 18million people directly and 14 million indirectly. The construction sector has increased its shareof India's total employment from 2.8% in 1983 to8% in 2013.

Institute for Construction Professionals - The Need

The construction sector contributes nearly 8% of India’s total employment. Thereare three categories of manpower involved in the construction sector consistingof the artisan level, the supervisory level and managerial level. It has beenobserved that every Rs.1 Crore, investment on construction project, generatesemployments of 22,000 unskilled man-days, 23,000 skilled or semiskilled man-days and 9,000 managerial and technical man-days approximately. Asaforementioned the Indian construction sector is exhibiting phenomenal growthhowever the skill base in the industry is still deficient. At the current rate themanpower requirement would be the highest in the unskilled workers segment, expected at about 60 million, followed by skilled workers at 25 million. Thoughthe shortage of unskilled workforce is a harsh reality faced by the IndianConstruction Industry the shortage of skilled, managerial and technical workforceis equally worrying. With only 3% of total teaching in the country addressing thedirect needs of the construction, engineering and management aspects requiredin the construction industry, the 14th Engineering Congress on Human CapitalDevelopment in January 2002 observed that in time to come, India will not havesufficient quality skilled and technical personnel even to undertake basicinfrastructure work.

The aforementioned deficit of skilled and technical personnel can only bemitigated by setting up specialised knowledge centres, which would offervocationally aligned academic programmes which is the principal idea behind theestablishment of the Institute for Construction Professionals (ICP).

In this endeavour Dr. Wills Thomas is ably supported by Mrs. Maria Wills Thomas(BSc Microbiology, MSc Food and Applied Nutrition, MSc Medicinal Plants, B.Ed)who is also one of the Founding Directors of Syntegra Eduventures. She is currentlyalso initiating a revolutionary movement in the area of women's empowermentthrough a unit of Syntegra called Edufemme Foundation which provides vocationaleducation programmes specifically developed for married women.

At ICP, Mrs. Maria Wills Thomas is responsible for fronting the inclusion of womenin the construction sector. India’s construction labour force is estimated at 30million people, of whom about half are women however they are almost exclusivelyunskilled, casual, manual labourers and are rarely found in male-dominated skilledtrades. At ICP we are devising competency enhancement programmes for womenprimarily in the domains of construction labour compliance, stores management, accounts for construction sector etc.
