ProjectoverviewTheIchthysProjectisaworld-classprojecttodevelopthenaturalgasandcondensatefield(IchthysField)thatwasdiscoveredintheBrowseBasin,offthenorth-westcoastofWesternAustralia.
TheIchthysFieldconsistsoftwohydrocarbonreservoirs,BrewsterandPlover.Thefieldcontainsresourcesestimatedatmorethan12trillioncubicfeetofgasandapproximately500millionbarrelsofcondensate.ThelatterrepresentsthelargestdiscoveryofhydrocarbonliquidinAustraliain40years.
TheUS$34billionIchthysProjectwillberankedamongthelargestgasandcondensateprocessingdevelopmentsintheworld.Duringoperationstheprojectisexpectedtoproduceapproximately8.4milliontonnes(Mt)ofliquefiednaturalgas(LNG)andapproximately1.6Mtofliquefiedpetroleumgases(LPGs)perannum,alongwithuptoapproximately100000barrelsofcondensateperdayatpeak.
TheIchthysProjectisajointventurebetweenINPEXgroupcompanies(theOperator),majorpartnerTotalgroupcompaniesandtheAustraliansubsidiariesofTokyoGas,OsakaGas,ChubuElectricPowerCompanyandTohoGas.

Offshore activities – Ichthys Field and gas export pipeline
INPEXintendstoinstallafloatingcentralprocessingfacility(CPF)todeveloptheIchthysField.WellstreamswillflowfromthefieldthroughsubseainfrastructureforpreliminaryprocessingontheCPFtoremoveliquids—includingthegreaterpartofthecondensate—fromthegas.Theseparatedliquidswillflowviaasubseaflowlinetothenearbyfloatingproduction,storageandofftake(FPSO)vesselwherethecondensatewillbetreatedandtransferredtoofftaketankersforexport.GasfromthefieldwillbedirectedfromtheCPFthroughan889-km-longgasexportpipeline(GEP)(882kmsubsea,7kmonshore)totheprocessingplantatBlaydinPointonMiddleArmPeninsulainDarwinHarbour.
Onshore activities – Blaydin Point, Darwin
ThegaswillbeprocessedintoLNGthroughatwo-trainprocessingplant.TheplantwillalsoseparateoutandexportLPGsandtheresidualcondensatethatwillbecarriedtotheplantwiththegasstream.
ConstructionoftheLNGprocessingplantandassociatedharbourdredgingactivitiesareunderwayandareexpectedtobecompletedintimetoachievefirstproductionbytheendofthefourthquarterof2016.TheproductsprocessedattheplantwillbeshippedfromDarwinHarbourtooverseasmarketsinLNG,LPGandcondensateships.

LocationofoffshoreactivitiesOffshoreactivitieswilltakeplaceinandaroundtheIchthysField,whichislocatedinproductionlicencesWA-50-LandWA-51-LintheBrowseBasin,approximately220kmoffthecoastofWesternAustraliaand820kmsouth-westofDarwin.Thefieldcoversanareaofaround800km²,withitsreservoirslocatedbelowseadepthsofabout235–275mandmorethan4000mofrock.TheIchthysFieldlocationandgasexportrouteareshowninFigure2.
Subseainfrastructureattheoffshoredevelopmentareawillconsistofthefollowing:• approximately50subseawellsdrilledfrombetween12to15drillcentres,developedoveraperiodof40years,andwith
about20ofthesewellsbeingdrilledbetween2013and2016• controlumbilicals,servicelines,risersandwet-gas,corrosion-resistantinfieldflowlines.
ThissubseainfrastructurewillbetiedbacktotheCPFandFPSObyaseriesofflexibleumbilicals,risersandflowlines(URF).TheCPFwillbeconnectedtotheFPSObytransfersystemsconsistingofflexiblerisersandflowlines.BoththeCPFandFPSO,shownschematicallyinFigure1,willbemooredinpositionfortheexpected40-yearlifeoftheProject.
TheGEPwillbeinstalledfromtheseabedbeneaththeCPFtoMiddleArmPeninsulainDarwinHarbour.ItwilltravelnearshorethroughDarwinHarbourparalleltotheexistingBayu–UndanGasPipeline.ApipelineshorecrossingwillcompletethesubseaportionoftheGEP,bringingthegastotheonshoreprocessingfacilities.
Keyoffshoreconstructionactivities
Development well drillingDevelopmentoftheIchthysFieldwillrequirethedrillingofapproximately50wellsovertheProject’slifetime.WellswillbedrilledfromdrillcentresingroupsofapproximatelyfivetooptimisetheefficiencyofrigoperationsandtominimisetheProject’sfootprintontheoceanfloor.
ScheduleThefirstphaseofdrilling,comprising20wellswithintheBrewsterreservoirisanticipatedtostartinmid-2014andtakeapproximately40months.Remainingwellsanddrillcentreswillbeaddedtomaintaingasproductionasthetworeservoirsaredepletedovertime.Wellheadsandmanifoldswillbeinstalledattheendofdrillingandwell-testing(seeFigure3).
VesselsAnumberofvesselswillberequiredtocompletethedrillingactivitiessafelyandefficiently.TheENSCO5006semi-submersiblemobileoffshoredrillingunit(MODU)picturedinFigure4willconductthefirstphaseofdrillingsupportedbytwoanchor-handlingsupplyvesselsforthedurationofthedrillingandrig-movingoperations.LogisticsupportwillbeprovidedfromBroome.Asalegislativerequirement,a500-m-radiussafetyzonewillbemaintainedaroundtheMODUandnounauthorisedvesselswillbepermittedwithinthisarea.

Umbilicals, risers and flowlines (URF) installation
Thisscopeofworkincludestheinstallationandprecommissioningofsubseaflowlines,supportstructuresandcontrolsystems,andtheconnectionofthesesystemstotheotheroffshorecomponents.TheURFprogramalsoincludestheinstallationofthemooringsfortheCPFandFPSOandtheconnectionofbothfacilitiestotheirmooringsystems.TheseactivitieswillbeperformedonbehalfoftheProjectbyMcDermottInternationalandHeeremaMarineContractors.KeysubseainfrastructureisshowninFigure5.
SchedulePreparatoryworkisplannedtocommenceinmid-2014,withkeyinfrastructurebeinginstalledoverthefollowing18months.TheFPSOandCPFarescheduledtoarriveatthefieldinlate2015forconnectiontomoorings,umbilicals,flexiblerisersandcontrolsystems.OtherURFinfrastructureandwellheadconnectionswillbeinstalledbetweenmid-2015andmid-2017.
VesselsURFinstallationactivitieswillinvolveseveralkeyoffshoreconstructionandinstallationvessels,includingtheEmeraldSea,AegirandNorthOcean102(orsimilarclassvessel),whichwillbesupportedbysupplyandstandbyvessels,tugsandbarges.

Gas export pipeline (GEP) construction
ThesubseaportionoftheGEPwillbeinstalledonbehalfoftheProjectbySaipem(Portugal)ComercioMaritimoSULda(Saipem).Twodifferentpipelayvesselswillcarryouttheinstallation,onespecialisinginshallow-waterpipelayandtheotherindeep-waterpipelay.
Afterpipelayhasbeencompleted,theGEPwillbehydrotestedwithfilteredandtreatedseawater.Itwillthenundergoprecommissioningtoremovetheseawaterandresidualsalt.
SchedulePipelineroutedredgingoperationsinDarwinHarbourareplannedtocommenceinlate2013.PipelayisscheduledtobegininDarwinHarbourinthesecondquarterof2014andfinishintheIchthysFieldin2015.Finalprecommissioningofthepipelineisexpectedtobecompletebytheendof2015.
VesselsDredgingoperationswithinDarwinHarbourwillbeperformedbyBoskalisAustraliaPtyLtdusingseveralvessels,includingtheQueenoftheNetherlandstrailingsuctionhopperdredgerandtheBaldurbackhoedredger.PipelaywillbeperformedbytheSemac1(Figure6)inshallowwaterandbytheCastorone(Figure7)indeepwater.

Central processing facility (CPF) hook-up
TheCPFwillbeusedforgas–liquidseparation,gasdehydration,gascompressionandexportandfutureinletcompression.Itwillalsoexportacommingledliquidstreamofcondensate,monoethyleneglycol(MEG)andproducedwatertotheFPSOandacceptflashgasbackfromtheFPSO.(MEGwillbeusedasahydrateinhibitor(anti-freeze)topreventriskofblockageinlinesontheseafloorwheretheseawatertemperaturewillbeabout4°C.TheMEGwillbeinjectedintoproductionfluidsatthewellheads.MEGisanon-toxicbiodegradableorganiccompound).
ScheduleTheCPFwillbeconstructedbySamsungHeavyIndustriesCo.Ltd.inKorea.ItwillbetowedtotheIchthysFieldinlate2015,whereitwillbehookedupto28anchorchainsbyMcDermottInternational.ItwillthenbecommissionedbyINPEXtobereadytoreceivereservoirhydrocarbonsinmid-2016.

Floating production, storage and offtake (FPSO) vessel hook-up
TheFPSOwillbeusedforcondensatedewatering,stabilisation,storageandexport.TheFPSOwillalsobeusedforMEGregeneration,produced-watertreatmentandflashgascompressionandexporttotheCPF.
ScheduleTheFPSOwillbebuiltbyDaewooShipbuilding&MarineEngineeringCo.Ltd.inKorea.ItsinternalturretwillbeconstructedbySBMOffshoreNVintheKeppelShipyardinSingapore.FollowingconstructiontheturretwillbetransportedtoKoreaandintegratedintotheFPSOhull.ThecompleteFPSOwillbetowedtotheIchthysFieldattheendof2015.McDermottInternationalwillpermanentlymoortheFPSObyhookingup21anchorchainstotheweathervaningturret.FollowinginstallationtheFPSOwillbecommissionedbyINPEXtobereadytoreceivereservoirhydrocarbonsinmid-2016.
