ICCTA Mission Statement:
“To promote the appropriate use and development ofinformation and communications technologies
(ICTs) to strengthen the recovery of the roots of theIndigenous peoples of the Americas and their legal,political, social, educational, cultural, spiritual and
economic well-being.”

ICCTA is a guide,pinpointing marketopportunities for andamong IndigenousPeoples; highlightingproven programs andservices; andfeaturing potentialsources of fundingand support.

Its voting members are Indigenous people andtheir governments, organizations, businesses andinstitutions. Its non-voting members are non-Indigenous business, NGO’s, governments andacademia.

The ICCTA was formed bythe participants attending the“1st Indigenous Workshop onCommunicationsTechnologies in theAmericas” in Mexico inDecember 2005, which wasco-hosted by the InternationalTelecommunications Union(ITU) and the MexicanGovernment through theNational Commission for theDevelopment of IndigenousPeoples (CDI).

More than 150 participants representing 19 countriesof the Americas and the Caribbean Region chose thefirst Directors of the Commission. Through fundingprovided by the Canadian government, they met inGuatemala in March 2007 to decide on thefundamentals of the organization and structure thatform the basis for its by-laws.

The ICCTA was incorporated through theCanada Corporations Act in January 2008.Its Head Office is in Ottawa, Canada.

A current Board of 17 Commissioners managesthe organization. A recruitment campaign is nowunder way to recruit members from all othercountries not currently represented on the Board.
The structure providesfor one Indigenousrepresentative percountry of theAmericas who ischosen by the caucusof its voting membersat each annualassembly.

The ICCTA has been in discussions with the ITUand the International Indigenous Task Force(IITF) concerning the development of a portal toserve the Indigenous peoples of the Americas.
This portal was turned over tothe IITF at a meeting in Brazilin August, 2009. ICCTA hasentered into a Memorandum ofUnderstanding with the IITF todevelop and maintain theportal.

Numerous agencies and institutions support andencourage the development and well being ofIndigenous peoples and their communities.
ICCTA is a uniqueinternationalIndigenousorganization which isideally placed toserve as the catalystto implement theircommitments.
