THE VENUE

Kuching, Sarawak (on Borneo Island), Malaysia

Kuching, popularly known as the Cat City, is the capital of Sarawak. Situated on the banks of the Sarawak River and with its romantic history and charm, Kuching is a unique tourism destination and an ideal base from which to go exploring. Sarawak is Malaysia’s largest state, situated on the northern part of Borneo Island. Sarawak's colonial past was at its peak between 1841 and 1946 during the rule of "White Rajahs" (British Brooke dynasty). Sarawak became a British Crown colony before gaining independence through the formation of Malaysia in 1963. Sarawak’s population of 2.35 million is made up of 28 ethnic groups, each with their own distinct language, traditions, and lifestyle. Famously known as the “Hidden Paradise of Borneo”, Sarawak is lavishly endowed with impressive natural landscapes, cultural diversity and friendly people. Thus, with its rich cultures, heritage and natural wonders, Sarawak offers an exotic range of attractions to see and things to do.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Professor Cecilia A. Essau (University of Roehampton, UK) Keynote: Addressing mental health needs in schools Cecilia is Professor of Developmental Psychopathology and the Director of Centre for Applied Research and Assessment in Child and Adolescent Wellbeing at the University of Roehampton, UK. She was born and raised in Sri Aman (Simanggang), Sarawak where she received her early education. She obtained her undergraduate and her Master of Arts degrees from Lakehead University (Canada), her PhD from the

University of Konstanz (Germany), and her “Habilitation” in Psychology (qualification for tenure-track professorships in Germany) from the University of Bremen (Germany). In 2011, she was made Fellow of the British Psychological Society in recognition of her contribution to the field of Psychology. She is also Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. She was awarded the Norman Munn Distinguished Visiting Scholar from Flinders University, Australia, Distinguished Visiting Professorship from De La Salle University, Philippines, and the Florey Medical Research Foundation Mental Health Visiting Professor from the University of Adelaide, Australia. She is the author of 220 articles, and is the author/editor of 20 books in the area of youth mental health.

Professor Marian J. Bakermans-Kranenburg (Leiden University, THE NETHERLAND) Keynote: Child Maltreatment: Risk factors, consequences, and possibilities for prevention and intervention Marian is professor of Child and Family Studies at Leiden University, The Netherlands. Her research focus is attachment and emotion regulation in parents and their children, with special emphasis on neurobiological processes in parenting and development. She co-developed the Video-feedback Intervention to promote Positive Parenting and Sensitive Discipline, an early intervention aimed at increasing caregiver sensitivity and improving adequate discipline strategies in order to prevent

or reduce behavior problems in children. Other research interests include the interplay between nature and nurture in development, and the role of oxytocin in parenting. She is currently PI of a research project on neurobiological factors involved in fathers’ parenting, funded by the European Research Council.

Professor Paul Delfabbro (University of Adelaide, AUSTRALIA) Keynote: Youth gambling in a digital age: Understanding the risk and protective factors Paul has published extensively in several areas, including the psychology of gambling, child protection and child welfare and has been a regular advisor to State and Federal Government bodies. Over the last decade, he has conducted research into the nature of adolescent gambling, examined the psychology and

social impacts of gambling, conduct epidemiological and experimental studies and research into responsible gambling initiatives. His recent research interests have related to the interaction between technology, social media and gambling as well as the relationship between clinical co-morbidity and problem gambling.

Professor Alice M. Gregory (Goldsmiths, University of London, UK) Keynote: “Sleeping like a baby: Genetic and environmental influences on sleep in children and adolescents” Alice first developed an interest in sleep research as a BA student of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. Following the completion of her degree, she studied in Japan for a year collecting cross-cultural data for her first publication in the field of sleep research. Upon her return she commenced her PhD at the Institute of Psychiatry using

epidemiological and twin samples to learn more about the associations between sleep disturbances, anxiety and depression concurrently and longitudinally. Alice is now a professor at Goldsmiths, University of London. She has published over 100 papers and chapters, mainly focusing on sleep or associated traits. Her first book: Nodding Off: Sleep from Cradle to Grave was published by Bloomsbury in June 2018

Professor Ruzita Abd. Talib (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia [UKM], MALAYSIA) Keynote: Facilitators and barriers in childhood obesity intervention - Malaysian experiences Ruzita is Professor of Nutrition at Nutritional Science Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Her major research interest includes Nutrition Education and Promotion, particularly in childhood obesity intervention and the application of glycemic index in dietary management of diabetes. She is member of various expert Committees, including Technical Working Group, Ministry of Health in Products Reformulation to Reduce Sodium in Food Products (2017-2018); Technical Sub Committee of Technical Working Group Malaysian Dietary Guidelines (2008-2010), Malaysian Adolescent Dietary Guidelines (2011-

2013) and Recommended Nutrient Intake for Malaysia (Energy and Macronutrients) (2016-2017); and a Panel of Assessor for Malaysian Qualification Agency in Nutrition and Dietetics (2017-2020).

Associate Professor Kylie M. Gray (Monash University, AUSTRALIA) Keynote: Current trends in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder in children Kylie is an Associate Professor and psychologist at the Monash University School of Clinical Sciences and Department of Psychiatry, and is the acting Director of the Monash University Centre for Developmental Psychiatry and Psychology. Kylie is an Adjunct Associate Professor of the University of Warwick Centre for Educational Developmental, Appraisal and Research, UK.

Associate Professor Gray has expertise in the area of developmental disorders and disability in children and young people. Her work has included addressing issues around diagnosis and assessment, development of assessment tools, mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of children and families, and the development and evaluation of supports and treatments. She has a well-established international track record and standing in the provision of professional training in autism assessment (ADI-R and ADOS).

Professor David Daley (University of Nottingham, UK) Keynote: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): From theory to practice David is Professor of Psychological Intervention and Behaviour Change in the Division of Psychiatry and Applied Psychology, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham, UK. He received his B.A in Applied Psychology from the National University of Ireland and his PhD in Neurodevelopmental Psychology from the University of Southampton, UK. He has authored/co-authored more than 70 articles, papers, books, and book chapters on ADHD. His research interests are focused on non-shared environmental influences

on ADHD, in particular he has devoted much of his career to the study of factors that enhance and interfere with the effective and enjoyable parenting of children with ADHD. Professor Daley is also currently co-director of the International Centre for Mental Health in China based at the Centre for Mental Health, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai.

Professor Rebecca P. Ang (National Institute of Education, SINGAPORE) Keynote: Addressing child/adolescent aggression and antisocial behavior – The need for multipronged, school-wide approaches Rebecca is Professor with the Psychological Studies Academic Group and Associate Dean of Education Research with the Office of Education Research (OER), National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Within OER, she co-leads the Center for Research in Child Development (CRCD), a center funded by the Ministry of Education, Singapore. CRCD is dedicated to conducting research on the development of children’s

competencies in domain-specific and domain-general areas, with an eye towards intervention and practices that will help children develop optimally. Prof Ang obtained her PhD in School Psychology from Texas A&M University. Her research and professional interests include developmental child psychopathology, and in particular antisocial, aggressive behaviour, and related prevention and intervention work.

Associate Professor Rachel Pye (University of Reading Malaysia, MALAYSIA) Keynote: Why learning to read is difficult, and what we can do about it? Rachel was awarded a PhD in Psychology by the University of Reading in 2008, for her thesis on predicting improvement in reading in dyslexic children. She worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Reading before taking a lectureship at the University of Winchester. She returned to the University of Reading in 2014, and took on the role of Director of Teaching and Learning for undergraduate psychology programmes. During her time there, she won a Collaborative Teaching Award (2016) and a prestigious University Teaching

Fellowship (2016). Her research continues to focus on reading and dyslexia, moving towards literacy in a multilingual environment. Rachel joined University of Reading Malaysia in 2017, and heads a growing and vibrant team of international researchers and lecturers.

Professor Emeritus Susan H. Spence (Griffith University, AUSTRALIA) Keynote: Using new technologies to deliver psychosocial interventions for anxiety and depression in youth Sue is an Emeritus Professor in the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention and School of Applied Psychology at Griffith University, Queensland, Australia. She also holds the positions of Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland and University of Roehampton in the UK. Her research focuses on the causes, assessment, prevention and treatment of anxiety and depression in young people. She was elected a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society, British Psychological Society and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. In 2016 she receive the Honour of being appointed an Officer of the Order

of Australia in recognition of her distinguished service to mental health research, particularly to prevention and treatment in young people. Professor Spence is the author of the Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale, a measure that is widely used internationally and has been translated into over 20 languages. She was one of the developers of BRAVE-ONLINE, and evidence-based internet-delivered treatment program for anxiety in children and adolescents.

Professor Louise Arseneault (Institute of Psychiatry, London, UK) Keynote: The pervasive and persistent impact of childhood bullying victimization Louise’s research focuses on the study of harmful behaviours, their developmental origins, their inter-connections with mental health, and their consequences for victims. In the early stages of her career, she examined harmful behaviours as a developmental outcome. Over time, the focus of her research broadened to include harmful behaviours as causes of mental health problems. She has taken a developmental

approach to investigate how the consequences of violence begin in childhood and persist to mild-life, by studying bullying victimisation and child maltreatment. Professor Arseneault completed her PhD in biomedical sciences at the University of Montreal and moved to the UK for a post-doctoral training at the MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre. She has been working with well-known longitudinal cohorts such as the Montreal Longitudinal Cohorts, the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study and the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Study, a nationally-representative sample of families with twins in England and Wales. She is the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Mental Health Leadership Fellow.

Dr Selvasingam Ratnasingam (Sarawak General Hospital, Kuching, MALAYSIA)

Keynote: Child and adolescent psychiatry - The Sarawak General Hospital experience Selva did his basic Medical training at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, India and started working as a doctor at Ipoh General Hospital in 1994. Dr Selva did his sub-specialty training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at the Highfield Family & Adolescent Unit, Warneford Hospital, Oxford University, UK from 2004-2007. During this time, he worked as a Staff Grade Psychiatrist in a Tier-4 inpatient referral unit for adolescents. In November 2007, he returned to Malaysia and

led the Child and Family Guidance Unit at Hospital Permai, Johor Bahru. He completed his Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship training under the Ministry of Health, Malaysia in 2011 and is presently the Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist and head of Department of Psychiatry & Mental Health at Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching. Dr Selva is one of the members of the guidelines development group for the Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children and Adolescents clinical practice guideline prepared by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. He is also a member of the guideline development group for Child Custody Cases with the Ministry of Health, Malaysia.
