Despus de varias ediciones, el VI Congreso Internacional de Envolventes Arquitec-tnicas ICAE, ha provocado que la ciudad de Donostia - San Sebastin se configure, durante unos das, como el centro de encuentro en el que

se centran las miradas tanto del mbito del diseo de la envolvente arquitectnica del edificio como de la fachada ligera.

En esta ocasin se ha producido un cambio signifi-cativo en el formato del Congreso debido a que el mismo pasa a ser internacional y se aade un da ms de conferencias para dar cabida a una jornada dedicada a presentaciones de temas tcnico -cien-tficos relacionados con la envolvente por parte del mundo acadmico y empresarial.

Con esto pretendemos ofrecer un marco adecuado para la participacin activa de investigadores, profe-sionales, docentes y estudiantes de aquellas disciplinas en las que la envolvente del edificio sea un eje comn.

El tema especfico de esta edicin estar enfocado en reflexionar sobre la innovacin como la dinmica que fundamenta la accin y los escenarios de la ac-tualidad, abordando temas como la eficiencia ener-gtica y la sostenibilidad como premisas a tener en cuenta en los futuros proyectos.

El Congreso reunir durante tres das y en un mismo mbito a destacados profesionales de distintas pro-vincias nacionales e internacionales expertos en el di-seo, construccin, consultora de fachadas, etc. con la necesidad imperiosa de apoyar la especializacin que exige la arquitectura que debe dar soluciones a la envolvente arquitectnica de ltima generacin.

ICAE 2012 busca ser un referente a nivel interna-cional y rescatar el valor de los profesionales de esta especialidad como dinmica que fundamenta la ac-cin de la ingeniera y la arquitectura, indagando en los nuevos escenarios de disciplina que imponen los cambios de los tiempos y la sociedad actual.

After various editions, the VI International Congress on Architectural Envelopes (ICAE) will transform the city of Donostia-San Sebastian into a meeting place for some days, where attention will focus on the design of the

architectural envelope of the building and light-weight facades.

On this occasion, a significant change has been in-troduced into the format of the Congress, which has now become an international event, and a further day of conference sessions will be dedicated to pre-sentations from the academic and business world on technical and scientific themes relating to the envelo-pe. With this, we hope to offer a suitable framework for the active participation of researchers, professio-nals, teachers and students from those disciplines in which the building envelope is a common thread.

The specific theme of this edition will focus on in-novation as the dynamic that justifies current day action and scenarios, covering such issues as ener-gy efficiency and sustainability as concepts to take into account in future projects.

The Congress will bring together in the same place, over three days, leading professionals from different national provinces and international experts in de-sign, construction, facade consultancy, etc. with the overriding need to support the specialization that is required by architecture that has to find solutions to last generation architectural envelopes.

ICAE 2012 seeks to become a reference at an in-ternational level and to reaffirm the value of profe-ssionals in this specialist field within a dynamic that underpins engineering and architectural action, in-vestigating the new scenarios of discipline imposed by changing times and modern-day society.

La ponencia trata de la introduccin de elementos reactivos en el diseo de las envolventes del futuro. Los sistemas de envolventes reactivas pueden encontrarse en fachadas, techos y tejados, en acabados internos y fenestracin. Las envolventes reactivas deben integrarse con el resto de elementos para formar parte de la estructura, as como de los cimientos y servicios. En la ponencia se desarrollan cuatro elementos reactivos concretos localizados en las envolventes del edificio: paredes transparentes climatizadas, fachadas ventiladas, materiales de cambio de fase y aislamiento dinmico.

This paper discusses the introduction of responsive building elements when designing our future envelopes. Responsive building envelope systems can be found in the external wall, roof, ceiling, internal finish and fenestration. These responsive elements must be integrated with others to form part of the structure, foundations and services. The paper develops four specific responsive elements located at the building envelopes: transparent climate walls, opaque ventilated facades, phase change materials and dynamic insulation.

Los procesos y las herramientas paramtricas han facilitado una nueva manera de abordar la arquitectura y de desarrollar proyectos con gran capacidad de produccin y modificacin. Comprobar, corregir y optimizar son ahora tareas fciles, que pueden convertirse hasta en interactivas y dinmicas, integradas en el mismo resultado del proyecto.

Processes and parametric tools have facilitated a new way of approaching architecture and of developing projects with great scope for production and modification. Tests, corrective measures and optimization are now easy tasks, which can even be turned into interactive and dynamic tasks, integrated into the same project outcome.

El proyecto Fachada FB720 tiene como objetivo el diseo de una fachada ligera modular de bajo impacto ambiental y alta eficiencia energtica mediante: 1/ el uso de materiales alternativos, 2/ el aprovechamiento del espesor como proteccin solar y 3/ la integracin de vidrios con proteccin solar variable.

Estas tres operaciones forman un sistema novedoso con inters tambin por separado para la mejora de otros sistemas de fachada ligera.

The aim of the Facade FB720 project is the design of a light modular facade with a low environmental impact and high energetic efficiency through: 1) the use of alternative materials, 2) the use of thickness as a means of solar protection, and 3) the integration of glass with variable solar protection.

These three operations form an innovative system and are also of individual interest for the improvement of other light facade systems.

El proyecto diseado por el arquitecto Charles Correa para el Centro Champalimaud en Lisboa pretende mostrar el concepto espacial de equipamiento contemplando grandes superficies de vidrio, llevando as al lmite la sensacin de transparencia. Para conseguir este objetivo se desarroll una envolvente basada en un sistema estructural soportado por un conjunto de glass fins suspendidos que permiten as disminuir la frontera entre el interior y el exterior.

The project designed by the architect Charles Correa for the Champalimaud Centre in Lisbon attempts to show the spatial concept of provision contemplating large areas of glass, thereby taking the sensation of transparency to the limit. An envelope was developed to achieve this objective based on a structural system supported by a set of hanging glass fins that thereby reduce the boundaries between the interior and the exterior.

Por lo tanto, el hecho de aprender de estos prototipos impulsa nuestros procesos de diseo.

At UNStudio the building envelope is seen as part of the larger architectural system, which during the design process we see as being influenced by technological constraints within the market for which the project is being built. Making experimental prototypes and endeavouring to achieve an enduring material sensibility within our projects has led to improved design processes, where information from physical mock-up testing is intrinsically linked to the digital optimization of the design. Learning from these prototypes therefore propels our design processes.

El proceso de diseo de la fachada biomimtica del Thematic Pavilion de la EXPO 2012 in Yeosu (Corea) sirve de modelo en la investigacin biomimtica avanzada, as como en su desarrollo y diseo. Partiendo de la seleccin e investigacin de los movimientos de las plantas y pasando por diferentes niveles de abstraccin se llega a desarrollar una solucin tcnica viable, que transforma la visin arquitectnica de una fachada adaptativa de suave oscilacin en una construccin real.

En la ponencia se valora el potencial de la biomimtica en la ingeniera de fachadas y se muestra el Thematic Pavilion como el ejemplo del proyecto que ha dado los primeros pasos en esa direccin.

The design process of the biomimetics facade of the Thematic Pavilion of EXPO 2012 in Yeosu serves as a model for advanced biomimetic research, development and design: from selection and investigation of plant movements to several levels of abstraction until a feasible technical solution was developed, which transforms the architectural vision of an adaptive and smoothly swaying facade into built reality.

The paper evaluates the potential of biomimetics in facade technology and shows the Thematic Pavilion to be an exemplary project where the first steps in that direction have been taken.

Cada proyecto reclama sus propios cdigos para responder a requerimientos distintos buscando la mxima idoneidad. Proponer una mirada multifocal ver desde diferentes puntos de vista- supone un proceso arquitectnico cuyo resultado ofrece una lectura caleidoscpica.

Each project needs its own codes to respond to different requirements that seek maximum suitability. Proposing a multi-focal view looking from different points of view implies an architectural process the result of which offers a kaleidoscopic reading. The image of the building should reflect that polyhydric view and the envelope therefore appears as a condenser, as a translation of the multiple and complex relations between the interior and the exterior, between the function and the response to the surrounding environment.

Las normas relacionadas con la envolvente han sido desarrolladas basndose en productos estandarizados y fallan cuando concepto arquitectnico e iniciativa empresarial se unen, algo habitual en la edificacin singular, para desarrollar nuevos productos. Surge entonces la necesidad de una evaluacin prestacional que asegure el cumplimiento de los Requisitos Esenciales de la DPC y justifique la idoneidad de los desarrollos innovadores.

Repasaremos las posibilidades de evaluacin existentes (TIA/TC by Tecnalia) y la experiencia con documentos similares aplicados a la envolvente en pases de nuestro entorno.

Envelope-related norms have been developed on the basis of standardized products and fail when architectural concepts and business initiatives are united, to develop new products, something that often happens in singular building. The need therefore arises to evaluate performance that guarantees compliance with the Essential Requirements of the Construction Products Directive (CPD) and justifies the suitability of innovative designs.

We shall review existing evaluation possibilities such as the Technological Innovation Audit/Technology Centre (TIA/TC by Tecnalia) and experience of similar documents applied to the envelope in neighboring countries.

La sostenibilidad tiene que darse por obligatoria, alcanzada y con justificaciones tcnicas objetivas. Estamos ya en la era del post-sostenible. La poca del boom nos ha dejado, adems de una tecnologa en la que todo es casi posible, la etapa histrica ms exigente con referencia a nuevas normativas y cdigos no adaptables a una arquitectura de poca de crisis no cclica. En definitiva estamos al principio de una etapa creativa y apasionante que nos va a permitir, con imaginacin y rigurosidad, disear mejores fachadas.

Sustainability has by obligation to be achieved and with objective technical justifications. We are now in the post-sustainable era. The age of the economic boom has left us, moreover, with a technology in which almost everything is possible, the most demanding historic stage with reference to new norms and codes that are non-adaptable to architecture in an age of non-cyclical crisis. In short, we are at the start of a creative and passionate stage that will allow us, with imagination and rigour, to design better facades.

La doble piel no debe ser una solucin rgida e invariable. Mediante el uso de herramientas de balance energtico, se establecer hasta dnde puede llegar la generacin de calor del volumen de aire, como afectar esto a la temperatura interior del edificio y se valorar el gasto energtico global. Se intentar establecer una barrera climtica que defina la posicin ptima de cada uno de los elementos de la doble piel.

The double skin should neither be a rigid nor an invariable solution. Through the use of energy balance tools, the extent to which the volume of air may be heated and how this will affect the interior temperature of the building will be evaluated and global energetic expenditure will be assessed. The intention is to establish a climatic barrier that defines the optimal position of each element in the double-skin.
