Abstract: It is widely recognized that the availability of
adequate amounts of electricity is a keycomponent in the economic
well-being of the people of a country. In 2009-10, India produced
802 TWhof electricity equivalent to only 670 kWh/year on a per
capita basis.
In the first part of this lecture, the speaker will attempt to
benchmark the countrys future needs ofelectricity. Using the
results of available studies on per capita energy needs, he suggest
that India shouldaim for a frugal per capita electricity need of
2000 kWh/year. Using this value, it is estimated that thefuture
need for electricity should stabilize around 3400 TWh/year in
2070.
Second part of the lecture will consider all the renewable
energy sources, those being used at presentand those which may
supply our needs in the future. In each case, he estimates the
potential of thesource to supply electricity in the future.
Wherever possible, he uses information available in theliterature.
Where this information is not available, he estimates the potential
of a source based oninformation which is indirect in nature or he
makes a judgement based on technological developments
which have taken place thus far. The sum of all the estimates
gives the total potential of renewableenergy sources and answers
the question posed in the title of this lecture.
About the Speaker: Prof. S.P. Sukhatme received his B.Tech.
degree in Mechanical Engineering fromBanaras Hindu University in
1958, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from M.I.T. in U.S.A. He joined
theDepartment of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Bombay, in 1965. Prof.
Sukhatme worked as DeputyDirector from December 1983 to December
1985 and as the Director of IIT Bombay from January 1995to January
2000. He then served as the Chairman of the Atomic Energy
Regulatory Board for five yearsup to January 2005.
Prof. Sukhatme is known for his outstanding contributions both
in teaching and research, in the areas ofHeat Transfer and Energy.
He has published nearly 70 papers. He is also the author of two
widely
known text books in Heat Transfer and Solar Energy.Prof.
Sukhatme is the recipient of many honours and awards. He received
the Prince of Wales GoldMedal for standing first class first in
Banaras Hindu University. He was awarded the Shanti SwarupBhatnagar
Prize for Science and Technology in 1983. He was elected as a
Fellow of the Indian Academyof Sciences in 1986, a Fellow of the
Indian National Academy of Engineering in 1987, a Fellow of
theIndian National Science Academy in 1995 and a Fellow of National
Academy of Sciences in 1999. Hewas awarded the title of Padma Shri
by the Government of India in 2001 and was the first recipient
ofthe Lifetime Achievement Award of the Indian Institute of
Technology, Bombay. He also received the OmPrakash Bhasin
Foundation Award for Engineering and was conferred the title of
Doctor of Science(honoris causa) by the Banaras Hindu University in
2001.
