Partition Mobility – Live Partition MovementQuestion 1: What is Live Partition Mobility?

► Live Partition Mobility allows the movement of a running LPAR from one physical machine to another without disrupting the operation of the OS and applications running in that LPAR. Applications keep on running.

LPM Requirements & PlanningQuestion 2: What are the requirements to run LPM?

Source and destination must support LPM► Enhanced hardware virtualization capabilities.► Identical or compatible processors.► Compatible firmware levels.

Source and destination must be LAN connected –same subnet.

All resources (CPU, Memory, IO adapters) must be virtualized prior to migration.OS is migration enabled/aware.► The source and destination servers must be POWER6 ► The mobile partition must be

Oracle’s June 2009 announcement for LPM● Question 3: What did Oracle announce on June 2009?

● Oracle announced via its Metalink website that LPM is now certified with Oracle Database. This means that LPM has successfully completed the requirements of a rigorous test plan developed by Oracle with IBM collaboration. IBM partnered with Oracle to execute these tests on a specific product combination. Oracle approved the results and now commits support of their products for production use with LPM.

● Oracle DB 10gR2 (10.2.0.4) is certified to be used with LPM on AIX 5.3 and AIX 6.1

● Minimum of service levels ( and up)– for AIX 5.3 : TL8 SP4 (Technology Level 8, Service Package 4) – for AIX 6.1 : TL2 SP3 (Technology Level 2, Service Package 3)

Q & A about this announcement

Question 4: Why is this announcement important?► LPM is a key PowerVM feature. IBM and Oracle partnered to develop and run a

set of tests that stressed the Oracle DB during migrations of a running partition. IBM demonstrated that Oracle maintains data integrity and active connections were retained during the migrations. For customers running Oracle Database in a single instance, there is now the option of using IBM’s Live Partition Mobility feature. LPM is a key technology for customers contemplating Cloud Computing. This announcement gives a very strong incentive for customers planning to deploy Oracle DB as part of their Cloud.

Question 5: What kind of opportunity does this announcement open?► PowerVM in general and LPM in particular are major advantages for IBM Power

Systems. Many customers have been ready to use LPM. With this announcement, customers have one more incentive to upgrade to Power6 technology. In addition, for Oracle customers running on IBM competitive hardware, the support for LPM means that there is yet another compelling reason to re-host the Oracle DB environment to a Power System.

Q & A about this announcement (continuation)

Question 6: What is the call to action, now that we know about this exciting new capability supported by Oracle?► IBM Power Systems sellers should make sure that their customers are aware of

this exciting announcement. At this point, IBM Power Systems offers the most complete set of virtualization features certified by Oracle, including VIOS, Dynamic Partitions as well as Partition Mobility. In addition, the support made available now is a yet another strong reason for customers to adopt IBM’s Cloud Computing model. IBM sellers working on hardware competitive situations can leverage this strong IBM advantage.

Question 7: Is there support for LPM in an Oracle RAC environment and for Oracle DB 11g? ► Support for LPM under Oracle RAC is planned to be available in the future. The

unique features of RAC require additional tests that focus on maintaining cluster integrity in addition to the data integrity demonstrated for the database. Support for LPM with Oracle Database 11g is also planned to be available in the future. A large segment of Oracle customers are running their production systems on Oracle DB 10g and it was felt that the immediate priority was to make LPM available on this version.
