50 years of coffee excellence

founded just after the country gained its independence, the roots of ibero Kenya, one of the oldest green coffee export companies of Neumann Kaffee Gruppe, go all the way back to 9th July 1964. initially named as ibero africa limited, it was later in 1993 that the company got its current name.

Celebrating half a century, the company has been amongst the top exporters in the country and is renowned for its expertise on coffee and excellence in quality. this expertise and knowledge, allied with the recent construction of our ultra-modern facility, enables us to deliver an exceptional level of service and

efficiency. from the Kenya highlands, we source, process and deliver a wide range of qualities, from Naturals to the world famous Kenya aa top micro lots.

our presence in east africa comes with the responsibility to develop a solid and sustainable foundation; Neumann Kaffee Gruppe sustainability programmes in Kenya are implemented with the sole aim of improving the livelihoods of smallholder coffee growers thus empowering their communities. We build for the future by initiating, championing, and providing the youth with opportunities to pursue a career in coffee.

Teamworkour team is a family, where decisions are taken collectively and responsibility is shared. every individual team member is a specialist in his or her field and provides timely and relevant solutions to our business needs.

all the above would have relatively limited success if it were not for a final and special ingredient: Passion. i found a team that loves what it does, just as i do, and puts its emotions and dedication into its daily work.

With the strong foundation and values developed over these 50 years, i am confident we will continue to turn challenges into opportunities and construct a successful future for our team, our shareholders and our partners.

Matthias hands-over to Danilo

Dear Friends and colleagues,

ibero Kenya not only celebrates its 50th anniversary but also completes a change of management. on this special occasion i will review some of my findings during my first months with the Neumann Gruppe but, before that, it is important to recognize the dedication of Matthias Koehler over the years and the legacy he left for ibero Kenya.

Matthias retired from his activities in east africa after 36 years of service to the Neumann Kaffee Gruppe. Having started his career in the coffee industry back in 1978, as a representative of the coffee trading company bernhard rothfos in tanzania, he became regional Manager for the east africa region following the take-over of bernhard rothfos by the Neumann Kaffee Gruppe. Matthias established a number of coffee trading and processing companies for the group in Kenya, tanzania, Uganda, rwanda, burundi and Congo. some of his major projects in Kenya were the overseeing of the acquisition and integration of sCeM (now tropical farm

Management Kenya ltd.) into the group and the implementation of the new coffee processing facility and regional headquarters at ruiru, Nairobi.

these assets and achievements will be remembered for many years to come. However, the main legacy constructed over our 50 years’ history are the values that drive our actions every day, some of which are:

commitment with Responsibility We have assets and a presence in key areas within east africa and these investments enable us to be present throughout the supply chain. We aim to set the industry standards, be a responsible corporate citizen and participate actively in policy-making and community work.

Trust We cultivate transparent, cooperative and fair relationships by providing solutions and responding flexibly to the demands of our partners. We want to be their first choice and strive to create the best solutions.

in the year 2010, a significant event of great importance for Neumann Kaffee Gruppe was celebrated: the opening of Neumann Kaffee Gruppe east africa’s new headquarters and location of the operative companies in Kenya as well as the new processing plant, NKG Coffee Mills Kenya. located in ruiru, a suburb of Nairobi, it comprises office buildings as well as a dry mill, export processing facility and warehouses.

this state-of-the-art facility fulfills the highest safety, hygiene, and labour standards, thus easily conforming to certification criteria.

the dry mill – the heart and pride of the new operation – offers a state-of-the-art, one-stop service that includes the processing of parchment coffee, the blending of coffee lots as well as all transactions required for export.

40 Years of quality farm managementTropical Farm Management

tropical farm Management Kenya limited is the pioneer professional estate management company in the region. it was incorporated in Kenya 40 years ago on 9 august 1974 as east african acceptances (estate Management Division). the original purpose was to facilitate a smooth transition of ownership of large scale commercial plantations from the original european settler owners to indigenous Kenyans. by the mid-1980s the company was managing 120 plantations, which included sisal, livestock, sunflowers, cereals, coffee and tea to produce up to 20,000 tonnes of coffee annually from about 8,000 hectares.

in 1999 – then operating as sCeM farm Management ltd – it became a member of the Neumann Kaffee Gruppe Hamburg GmbH. in 2003, the company was renamed tropical farm Management Kenya ltd.

necF: Lights for Learning Project (‘d.light’ Solar Lights)

together with the Nancy ellen Crooks foundation (NeCf), we implement the lights for learning project at Kawethei farmers’ Cooperative society.

NeCf is a foundation that was started in 2009 by friends and family who admired the impact on the world by the late Nancy Crooks, a great lady full of energy and compassion.

the project rolled out solar lights for distribution to parents with school-going-children, school boards and teachers in order to allow children to do their homework after dark at home – so as to improve their performance; it stirred a lot of interest in this community.

if any of these projects interest you, please do not hesitate to contact us.
