    NATURE, CONFLICT, COOPERATION AND SYMBIOSIS

    TOWARDS BALANCING FOUR LIONS: MARKET; STATE;

    SOCIETY AND SELF

PUSHING THE NEW FRONTIERS OF MANAGEMENT RESPONSES

VIVISECTING The KNOWLEDGE ORIENTED BUSINESS MODELS

    Tra

    cks

As communism died and capitalism is falling apart, as human relaons and

corporate connecons have leaped over Naonal boundaries, as environmental concerns andeconomic challenges worry the global populaon, it is for the science, art and wisdom of management

to take center stage to nd intelligent soluons for humanity in 21st

    century. The mely theme chosen

for the purpose is Nature, Mind and Technology.

As technology is used to manage and govern human aairs as never before, serious quesons are

raised of its impact on both Nature and Human Beings. The most signicant queson is how to

manage the relaonship between these so that both man and his place in nature are not only sus-

tained but enhanced and developed to a higher degree resulng in a beer quality of life marked by

general well-being and happiness for all?

Further, tradional industrial informaon mass media centric economy reects elist form of social

and economic discourse. Intellectual property bales in pharmaceucal industry (TRIPS), copyright

regimes (SOPA, shrinking public domain, bales against pirates), and knowledge cartels stand

tesmony to this. At any point of view, the societal discourses get rooted in three forms. Firstly, chal-

lenges to public sphere through generave internet based business models and the Arab Spring pre-

sent limits on the extent of societal tolerance for top down approaches. Secondly, sharing based pro-

ducon models (Wikipedia), open innovaon models (P&G, IBM), user driven innovaons (Google

Maps, Lego Toy) and other online business models (Intuit, Amazon, E -bay) present a new wave in busi-

ness thinking at the intersecons of nature, mind and technology.

The third factor on the horizon is the rise of Indias so power. Indias unique contribuon to Global

society in general and US in parcular, from Swami Vivekananda (Spiritual tradion) to Mahatma Gan-

dhi (Social acon), the Emergence of Knowledge Professionals in the current era, is witnessing a re-

vived and heightened interest. As a model of so power, essenally rooted in the Mind, trickling up to

the upper echelons of the society, Indian Management thoughts are now aracng serious aenon

    even among the Western thinkers.

Though the transion is full of glorious uncertaines, it is our duty in aempng to map the future

direcons of the interfaces of the global society; economy and polity. This calls for the need for a new

Earth Shastra. The current edion of the conference therefore aims to create a common plaorm for

scholars, students, corporate praconers and acvists in discussing and disseminang the emerging

    thought currents and thought leadership.

Nature, in the current context, goes beyond natural environment related issues like climate change and polluon to

encompass issues like corrupon, terrorism, urbanizaon, underground economy, human rights, sustainable

development , cyber cultures all that go in dening the symbioc r elaonship with others

The ever changing dynamics between corporate, state and society gets reected in issues like digital pluralism, geopolics,

military industrial complex, internaonal instuonal governance like WTO and IMF, outsourcing and its consequences like

sweatshops, contestaons for the public sphere constute the underlying theme

Given the underlying changes as in the above themes necessitate new approaches in management. Indian management

approach as also the funconal implicaons for nance, markeng, HR, operaons serve as the basis for this theme

As couple of leading scholars put it, every business is a knowledge business. Given the increasing role of knowledge,

informaon, creavity, culture etc. in business, the track explores new models and challenges like Peer producon,

Generavity, cyber security, intellectual property rights, lo ng tail open sourcing, business obsolescence etc.

This contemporary city has been a melng pot of dierent cultures,

imbibing each one of them seamlessly and eortlessly. A major commercial

hub in India, the city is home to several industries, IT and ITES being

prominent. However,Bangalore is not only about industries, and has more

to oer in terms of tourism as well. The place is lively, vibrant, bustling with

people and very urban in its approach. Not only that, it is also bestowed

with long stretches and parks which are lined with beauful trees, famous

historical monuments, busy shopping markets, well maintained gardens

and magnicent buildings. Some of the major aracons include Lal Bagh,

Bangalore Palace, Cubbon Park and Tipu Sultan's Palace.

Bangalore was the fastest-growing Indian metropolis aer New Delhi

between 19912001, with a growth rate of 38% during the decade.

The cosmopolitan nature of the city has resulted in the migraon of people

from other states to Bangalore, which has in recent years given rise to

tensions between immigrants and locals. Scheduled Castes and Tribes

account for 14.3% of the city's populaon.Kannadais the main and widely

spoken language in Bangalore, while English, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil are

    also spoken and understood.

With the increase in number of industries in Bangalore year on year, the

number of immigrants has also increased. As a result, Bangalore is becoming

a hub of intellectuals and professionals and hence has led to the develop-ment of young talents.
