IB LEARNER PROFILE TRAIT OF THE MONTH: CARING As we begin a new month of school here at BIS, we also will begin to emphasize a new IB Learner Profile trait. September was the month of ‘Inquiry’, but October will be the month of ‘Caring’. Caring is defined by IB as students “showing empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. Students have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.” Student empathy, compassion, and respect for one another will be reaffirmed by teachers through literature, interactions and reflection. The trait of Caring is how we make our school’s environment a happy and welcoming one. Students will also take a looking into caring as a means of improving the natural environment around them. Please, when possible, discuss what is means to be caring with your child at home. We also are excited to hold our United Nations Day on October 20 th which will allow students to hear and see first-hand how people and organizations are helping each other around the world. It is our school’s goal to make sure our student’s, when they leave BIS, take the learner profile out into the world with them. Not only demonstrating an understanding of what is means to be ‘caring’ but also carrying sense of personal commitment to helping others, and the environment around them. William Polan, Director of Studies CROSS COUNTRY The Taigan Cross Country Team made its way to Almaty last weekend in what turned out to be the most successful cross-country event in the school’s history. Schools from all over Central Asia competed, including three schools from Bishkek. Despite the early morning snow, students showed amazing Taigan spirit with every student running a personal best (PB) time. Congratulations to the Boys Junior Varsity & Varsity teams on each taking 2nd place overall. Special mention goes to Aila Grant who ran 3rd in the Varsity Girls 5km and beating her personal best time by 3 minutes! Other special mentions go to Dauren Oberhuber who set a new JV Boys school record with a time of 13:52 and Alessandro Marti, who set a new Varsity 5km school record in a time of 20:39. IB LEARNER PROFILE TRAIT OF THE MONTH: CARING

As we begin a new month of school here at BIS, we also will begin to emphasize a new

IB Learner Profile trait. September was the month of ‘Inquiry’, but October will be

the month of ‘Caring’. Caring is defined by IB as students “showing empathy,

compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. Students have a

personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives

of others and to the environment.” Student empathy, compassion, and respect for

one another will be reaffirmed by teachers through literature, interactions and

reflection. The trait of Caring is how we make our school’s environment a happy

and welcoming one. Students will also take a looking into caring as a means of

improving the natural environment around them. Please, when possible, discuss what

is means to be caring with your child at home. We also are excited to hold our United

Nations Day on October 20th which will allow students to

hear and see first-hand how people and organizations are

helping each other around the world.

It is our school’s goal to make sure our student’s, when they

leave BIS, take the learner profile out into the world with

them. Not only demonstrating an understanding of what is

means to be ‘caring’ but also carrying sense of personal

commitment to helping others, and the environment

around them.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Taigan Cross Country Team made its way to Almaty last weekend in what turned out to be the most successful

cross-country event in the school’s history.

students showed amazing Taigan spirit with every student running a personal best (PB) time. Congratulations to the

Boys Junior Varsity & Varsity teams on each taking 2nd place overall. Special mention goes to Aila Grant who ran 3rd

NEW OUTRIEA

To the People of the World,

From Catalonia to Kurdistan,

independence uprisings are in the air,

and Primary 4A has headed the call. On

September 29th, the Declaration of

Independence for the infantile country

of New Outriea was signed. Based on

the benevolent wisdom of the, student

created, “13 Rights”, New Outriea was

born. Any visitor to New Outriea is

under the protection of these 13 Rights

which include, the right to Plants,

Earth, School, Food, Community and

even Outer Space.

Our Revolution was born out of

the desire to make the world a

better place. One of New

Outriea’s most important “13

Rights” is the right to

Movement. Do not expect to get

your passport checked when

coming to visit. All are welcome

to visit, hangout or even

emigrate whenever you please.

If you do decide to stop by

please check out our newly

created Ministry of Tourism for

more information and hand-

made propaganda.

The students of New Outriea intend to use Article 1 of the Montevideo Convention of 1933 to gain recognition as a

sovereign nation. This requires students to form a fully functioning government, and also to engage in foreign

relations. To accomplish these tasks

students are currently writing letters

to world leaders, in an attempt to

set up trade-partnerships. If anyone

reading happens to personally know

any Presidents, Dictators, Kings,

Queens, Ayatollahs or Despots, who

would like to adopt our 13 Rights

please get in contact with our

Minister of Press. He sits next to the

art supplies cabinet in the back of

our Country.

NEW FACES

Ms Lim has a BA in Liberal Arts, an AAS Degree in Communication Arts and a Masters in Teaching English as a Second

Language from the University of San Francisco. She also has Multiple Subject CLAD Teaching Certification in

California. Her experience is very varied in the California public schools

system, with an emphasis on teaching English and creative arts, as well as

being a Grade teacher. When asked to briefly introduce herself to the BIS

community, Ms Lim wrote the following:

I am glad to be at BIS because I enjoy learning and working with many

different cultures. I grew up in Hawaii where although we are American, many

of us have a multi-ethnic background. I love to travel but have never made

another country as my home besides the US. The last place I came from was

California, so if you see me bundled up in lots of clothes, I am still getting used

to the cold!

Due to my travels and background, I love trying different types of food.

Sometimes I am brave, and sometimes I am not. Some of the more interesting

food I have tried is stinky tofu, balut, and raw yak meat! I look forward to

trying some of Kyrgyzstan’s interesting and unique cuisine.

PARENT-TEACHER EVENING- OCT. 18TH

On October the 18th, the school will be hosting an evening of parent and teacher meetings. The ‘Open House’ will

take place from 4:30-6:00 and will allow parents and teacher to better introduce themselves.

For the Preschool and Primary school, parents will have an ‘Open House’ where they are able to come see their

child’s classroom, listen to their child’s teacher talk about the year ahead, and ask any questions they may have.

There will not be individual meetings on this evening, rather the parents will meet with their students Homeroom

teacher and co-teacher as a class. Individual meetings are held after each report period, when parents can discuss

their respective child’s progress.

For the Secondary School (MYP1-DP2), parents will be able to sign up for individual meetings with single-subject

teachers they would like to speak with. Next week we will send out details in regards to scheduling a time to meet

teachers.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB

Everyone knows that reading is an essential part of our lives. BIS encourages students to read more books as they

help us improve understanding, build self-confidence, gain experience from other people, boost imagination and

creativity as well as develop our reading, writing and communication skills. That is why

our school gives you an opportunity to order English language reading books, delivered

from the UK to Bishkek International School. The deadline for orders this month is

October, 12 2017.

Orders can be placed online going to:

http://eu-schools.scholastic.co.uk/bishkekinternationalschool or by leaflets that should

be filled out and submitted to Ms. Elena in the library. Leaflets are available at the

school reception and in the library.

Preschool 1 Preschool 1 children have spent the past few

days learning about feelings and emotions. We

discussed that our emotions can shift from one

to another, and during a day we may feel happy,

sad, silly,

surprised or scared. We closely investigated what

causes our various emotions. We also talked

about how to express our feelings and emotions.

Our favourite activity this week was baking emoji

cupcakes. Children loved to mix all the

ingredients and decorate the cupcakes creating

happy and surprised, sad and angry faces

Preschool 2

Preschool 2 started to learn about “how

I continue to grow and change” and

“my role within my family.” Children

showed their family’s pictures and talk

about all members of the family. They

compared themselves when they were

little and now and they noticed how

they grew and changed. Kamila said, “I

drank milk (in a bottle), when I was

little” pointing to her picture.

Thanks to all parents for participating

on this project and sharing with us your

family pictures.

Preschool 3

One more week has come and gone in a blink of an eye. Our

preschool 3 students had so much fun learning this week. We

learned about the letter ‘i’ and that ‘i’ is for ice-cream and

insects. We also had fun learning how to do the letter ‘i’ dance.

Our preschool friends were also working on learning the

numbers 15 and 16. We also made a number 15 cookie jar and

a big number 16 train to decorate our class.
