AHIMA’s Convention

Taryn Henley, CCS will be the educational speaker for IAHIA’s December, 2017 meeting. The topic will be infusion coding. She will be taking a close look at the strict criteria and guidelines associated with CPT infusion coding. Here is a short bio of Taryn: I have worked in health information for almost 20 years. My current position is Regional Coding Review Manager at Kaiser Permanente. Each month I co-create teaching material that

focuses on a new area of coding that includes ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT. I started my career in health information at Loma Linda University Medical Center and remained there for over 18 years working in several positions within the organization. I attended the Loma Linda School of Allied Health where I received my medical coding education and certification. My final position held at Loma Linda was as Quality Assurance Coding

SPEAKER TARYN HENLEY, CCS

I attended AHIMA Convention and Exhibit 2017 in Los Angeles and thought I would share my experience. I brought my camera and took some pictures to share as well. As a first time attendee, I was not sure which day or how many courses to attend, so I chose one day with some educational tracks I was interested in. At sign in, everyone was issued a badge that was used electronically to verify class attendance and was scanned at exhibitor booths. Then I was off to the general session which was huge and was very interesting to be a part of.After the general session, I headed towards the Exhibitor Hall. Again, huge! I admit it was overwhelming and time flew by fast in the hall as I went from booth to booth of vendors for coding software, CDI, consultants, education, outsourcing, resume help,

recruiters, HI exchange, revenue management, ROI services, and so much more. There was so much to see that I actually missed my first class. I did make it to Optum’s great buffet. Here I ran into Melany Merryman and Mark Huhta from Peak. I also met a group of people from a local hospital who were able to connect me with a previous director I worked for and convinced me to attend the dinner afterwards. I met another group of ladies, Linda Rodriguez, Alicia Stevenson, and Dannielle Estrada, all from Kaiser here in Southern California who welcomed me to sit with them at dinner. AHIMA’s convention had a Hollywood theme, and I have to say, they nailed it—red carpet,

AHIMA backdrop, paparazzi photographers, gowns, photo booths, a band, and more. I was glad I attended the dinner as conversation was great with these ladies and this is where I was able to connect with my previous director and catch up. So, would I go again? Most definitely! I would attend as many days possible. I found one day was just not enough. It takes one day just to orient one’s self. I would also review the maps in the program guide and plan better. It was a very positive experience all the way around. I met new people and was able to reconnect with some from the past. I got a broader perspective of how HIM and vendors interact, and even though I missed my first choice of educational classes, I still learned about subjects I otherwise would not.

Auditor and Trainer which prepared me for my current role at Kaiser. My hope is to continue building educational platforms that strengthen knowledge and insight within the medical coding community.
