Preface

The IABSE Geneva 2015 Conference aims to challenge structural engineers who need to interact more with other professions and disciplines as infl uential and responsible contributors in forming the sustainable built infrastructure for modern societies. The enormous impact and long-time effect of the built infrastructure dictates to take this challenge seriously in order to ensure the best decisions by politicians and other decision makers. Structural engineers are called to shape the future society and economy.

These proceedings contain 310 papers devoted to the four Global Themes of the IABSE Geneva 2015 Conference as established by the Lead Team: 1) Climate Change and the Energy Challenge; 2) Global Engineering Challenges; 3) Break-Through Technologies and 4) Urbanisation and Growth. All papers have been reviewed by the Scientifi c Committee and are presented in parallel scientifi c and technical sessions. The conference format is chosen to facilitate necessary debates and discussions. Each session will be actively lead and animated by Session Facilitators. Participants will explicitly have the possibility to mutually interact productively via session styles that will encourage interaction.

Valuable results identifying new subjects for further research and debates will be identifi ed by the Session Facilitators and the Scientifi c Committee for further consideration by IABSE’s Technical Committee. New IABSE Working Groups may be suggested to bring identifi ed subjects forward in the coming years for potential presentation and further discussion at the IABSE Events. It is hoped that active conference participants will return home enriched by substantial more knowledge and as part in a global network of experts in structural engineering.

My special thanks are due to my doctoral student Malena Bastien-Masse, Secretary of the Scientifi c Committee and Philippe Van Bogaert, Joan Casas and Christian Cremona, the Vice-chairs, as well as all the Members of the Scientifi c Committee.
