PREFACE
Dear Participants
The Japanese group of IABSE is very excited to welcome you all at the IABSE conference in Nara from May 13 to 15, 2015 with the theme Elegance in Structures.
Japan is a country with long history of pioneering and innovation in structural engineering, especially bridges and buildings. It is also a country with long history of natural disaster; earthquake, typhoon and hash environmental condition. Similar to development in other aspects, important features of innovations in Japanese structural engineering are consideration to the detail and fine finishing. Therefore, designing and delivering the structural engineering innovations always require delicate balance between developing new technology against hash natural conditions and the demand for fine finishing, which manifests itself in a form of elegant structure – the main theme of this conference.
Within the general theme of Elegance in Structure, the conference covers the following topics: Aesthetic Design, Elegant Structure, Historical Structures, New Application of Materials to Structure, New Technological Advances on Sustainability, New Structural Form, Innovations of Analysis, Design, and Construction, and Smart Solution to Mitigate Natural Disaster.
The conference program includes presentation of over 240 papers, divided into 9 plenary keynote lectures from world-renowned experts, 25 session keynotes and 210 technical presentations. Commercial exhibition and special sessions are also arranged to enable industries and scientific community to explore collaboration and business opportunity. Two technical visits to cultural heritage and bridge construction project, and a Guided Walking Tour of Nara City are also included in the program. In addition to these, the conference includes workshop as a part of Young Engineers Programme (YEP).
The Conference Report includes full papers the keynote lectures and short version of accepted papers, while all full papers are available on the Conference CD-ROM.
Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all members of the Scientific and Organizing Committee for their utmost effort to organize this conference, members of the Japanese Group of IABSE, members of the Advisory Committee, all members of IABSE, authors and participants, sponsors and industrial partners. We wish you have a great conference and have an enjoyable visit in Nara.
Yozo FujinoChairman of the Scientific Committee

TECHNICAL VISIT
TV (1): Exploring Construction and Modern Retrofit Techniques for Historic Wooden StructuresKofukuji Temple Chu-Kondo: Restoration of Original Building Based on SurveyKofukuji Temple has many historic wooden structures including three registered as national treasure. Currently, the restoration of the Chu-Kondo (the central golden hall) at the time of foundation is undergoing from 1998, aiming to hold celebration of the completion in 2018. The restoration plan is based on excavation and research of podium including reviews of literature and architectural drawings written after the Nara Period (AD 710-794). The construction of most parts of the framing has been completed so far. The tour guided by an expert takes you to the inner part of the main hall that is not accessible to public.Commentator: Dr. Hajime Tateishi, Tateishi Kozo-Sekkei Inc.
