EDITORIALby Phil Steven s

Good afternoon football followers .In the frantic lead up to the start of the season a couple of occurrences really highlighted and made me feel

what a nice environment sports administration is to work in .Recently one of our oldest and long-standing sponsors Carlton and United Breweries came to us - which

is in itself unique in this economic climate - and asked how in our Centenary year could Carlton recognize theCentenary Year in a more tangible way other than through their sponsorship agreement.

A few items such as pewter mugs for each club to mark the Centenary and the donation of commemorativeposters were agreed upon when out of the blue was thrown into the discussion the possibility of decent sized goalpostsat Elsternwick Park - as distinct from "the matchsticks" that have prevailed for years . The result, a new, fully installedset of aluminium posts identical in every way to those at the MCG suitably adorned with CUB corporate padding .

What struck me about this whole project was that we, the VAFA, didn't have to chase and sell the Associationbut rather the offer was made to us .

We must be doing something right in the way we look after our sponsors. On the Friday before the first game the electronic scoreboard which was being serviced for three weeks or so

previous was not going to be in operation for the first day, dueto likely non-arrival of essential parts . Whilst involvedin the Premiers' Cup I had noticed at the Frankston VFA ground a new type of scoreboard in operation - a seriesof magnetic white squares rearranged manually on steel plates to display the numbers required .

A couple of quick (and desperate) phone calls later and I had one Bob Beattie, the man who had developedthis system, only too happy to help me with a new portable scoreboard, which will be developed and used asa permanent back-up board at Elsternwick Park .

I recommend thoroughly this board - the numbers are extremely easy to read from a distance and very simpleto change. For more information on this board for your club request from me a sheet explaining it more fully orphone Bob Beattie on 789 8859 .

As I said initially two stories that made me feel good on the eve of the season . Thanks Bob Beattie an dCarlton and United .

Have a good day at the football .Phil Stevens

REVIEWAfter a brilliant 9 goal third quarter into the wind Nort h

Old Boys were able to establish a winning lead overDe La Salle.

Led by on-bailers Tony Cahill and Gerard Phylandthe Old Boys brushed De La aside in a most convincingmanner.

De La's full forward, Pat Mannix was well held byNorth's full back, Peter O'Farre ll . In fact the 18 pointmargin could have been greater if not for the efforts ofPeter Rennie and And re w Macintosh in De La's lastiine of defence.

North displayed superb running skills which saw 11players score goals .

Collegians ran all over M arcellin in the final quarterto run out easy victors by 43 points .

Chris Pollock in the ruck gave his rover DannyThomson first use of the ball on many occasions .

Steve Boysen in his new role at half back along withTony Zannoni were not quite enough support to stopthe Collegian landslide.

David Hoyle had an impressive return booting 3goals and Michael Lake chipped in with a bag of 5 .

Watch out boys Collegians could be "back in town"this year.

Therry trounced Old Haileyburians at theMcKinnon Reserve - a hard task at the best of times .

Tim Taylor, Paul Matton and David Wriggleswo rthwere unbeatable all day.

Peter Thiessen continued his good form of '91 onthe wing for Haileybu ry and Paul Woff showed somegood signs but all was to no avail as Therry gainedmomentum and confidence .

St Bernards flogged Old Scotch much toeveryones surprise -just how much of a home groundadvantage do they have?

Gavin Keane at full forward booted 6 goals as StBernards ran riot .

Scotch ruckman, Duncan McCall did a fine job inthe ruck against Wayne Carey but was not givenenough support by his other on-bailers .

The St Bernards' backline played tight footy andplayers such as Simon Walsh, Mark Egan and BobPurcell did a fine job in keeping the Cardinals to just6 goals.

Old Xaverians had an unpleasant welcome into ASection as Ormond stormed to a commanding half timelead .

The Ormond old timers such as Matt McConville,Phil Kingston and Russell Barnes were at their best .

Xavs will need great improvement from their fringeplayers if they expect to stay in A Section .

The performance of Dermot Dann and Geoff Cla reon their respective Xaverian wings was heartening butthey lacked a cohesive forward line .

PREVIEWOrmond are at home to St Bernards and both team s

will be brimming with confidence after 1st roundvictories. St Bernards are very much an unknownquantity but they do have a great deal of experienceon the field in theform of Frank Dunell, Wayne Careyand Gavin Keane . The on-ball duels betweenOrmond's And rew Jobling and Matt McConville andSt Bernards' Wayne Carey and Jack Overmanshould prove to be the highlight of this game . Somehowit is difficult to imagine that St Bernards would haveenough good players all over the ground to stopOrmond today. The Ormond runners such as BrettConnell and Dar ren Wood may open any faults thatthe St Bernards' defence possesses but be aware thatthe Saints will not be handing this game over on a plate

Ormond by 20 points.Old Scotch will have their hands full as they take on

Collegians at Flinders Park . After being murdered lastweek by St Bernards I have no doubt that theCardinals will come out with all guns blazing today.Collegians have a potent forward line with the likes ofMount, Schober, Hoyle and Lake all capable ofkicking a bag . Bob Fuller and Steve Reddish will beleading the Old Scotch defence which was torn toshreds last week - I don't think Scotch will play thatbadly again! Ga ry Irvine and Ed Allen should havea fine duel on the wing but with Mark Hibbins and MattGalbraith constantly getting the ball I would expectCollegians, who are very much on a high, to win thisgame, Russell Greene will have to do his homeworkif heexpects histeam to get upthis week- Collegiansby 2 goals.

A confident Therry welcome Old Xaverians to OakPark . Therry at home are as tough as any team in thecompetition - and they know it! Tim Taylor and PaulMatton are in fine touch and no doubt will be wornclosely by Justin Cardillo and Michael Logan . Thefirst use of the ball should go to Therry as one wouldexpect big David Wrigglesworth to dominate thisgame. The forward play of Gilmour and Eastmui re mayprove to be a major headache for Xav's coach GrantThomas and it is difficult to see him having enoughgood options to prevent Therry from kicking awinningscore. If Xavs decide to play this game man on manperhaps they may hold Therry down but I can't seethem getting on top - Therry to win by 6 goals .

No rt h Old Boys coming off a fine 1st round victoryover De La Salle play Marcellin at Elsternwick Park .Marcellin who have been devastated by the losses ofRob Gross and Chris Slatte ry will be in for a mostunpleasant outing at VAFA Headquarters . The OldBoys looked great last week and with opportunitiessuch as Gerard Phyland, Luke Boyle and BrianHanlon seemingly at the fall of every ball, I would expec t

RUSSELL BARN ES PLAYS HIS 200THOrmond congratulates Russell Barnes on playin g

is200th game. Russell is well known in Amateur circlesand is a legend at Ormond, was captain of Premiershipsides in 1985-87-88. He suffered a very serious injuryin 1989 but showed great courage to return in 1990being a member of the 1990 Premiership . He alsorepresented Victoria with distinction in 10 games on thehalf backflank . Russell you were a very inspiring leaderwho would do anything to help the Ormond cause andwe thank you for your great service and wish you allthe best for the future .

MELEES - BEWAREA melee is "Where an incident takes place involving players, pushing, scragging, jumping into packs,

throwing each other to the ground or other similar such conduct" .

Page 6: ;I- uoal+...the St Bernards' defence possesses but be aware that the Saints will not be handing this game over on a plate Ormond by 20 points. Old Scotch will have their hands …

The opening round of the season got underway inhot and oppressive conditions with a strong northerlywind making scoring a difficult task indeed .

The match of the round was played at Timber RidgeOval . Blues started with plenty of confidence andlooked good . Trinity struggled against the wind, butto their credit Trinity were hanging in there. Trinity'sbackline of Adam Marshall from the U19s (a greatplayer), Michael Turner and Tim Roberts andHopkins were setting up many attacking opportunities .Blues' Don Mclnnes, Keats and Lockhead wereworking hard for their goals . The game was won in the1/3 quarter by ruckman Mick Yandell, who wasdominating the ruck giving Hammish, Worsley andDar re l Gust an armchair ride. Blues forward Jack Frithand Michael Turner were having a great duel with thehonours slightly favouring Frith . Blues finished thematch full of running and I expect them to have a greatseason .

Whitefriars unfurled their 1991 flag at home againstOld Mentonians and then proceeded to unleash apowerful display of good ammo football . In a gamewhere I thought the B Grade experience of OldMentonians would show out it was the completeopposite. Coach Geoff Reiley really had Whitefriarsfiring . Defender Simon Strike was unbeatable in theair, Noel Jenkins and Pratt - 5 goals apiece was justreward for some very good football - were proving ahandful for Old Mentonians' defenders. OldMentonians, brilliantly led by 1992 Captain and B&Fwinner in 1991, John Sly, were still in the game at 3/4time. Defenders Nick Macquarie and Al Petrov wereexcellent players, as was rover Craig Best . An 8 goalto 2 last quarter by Whitefriars with centreman JulianPhilip and utility Ben C rowe dominating were far tooslick for their Old Mentonian opponents . Whitefriarsout-ran and out-numbered Old Mentonians on far toomany occasions, and made a very auspicious debutin their first B Grade game with a 49 point victory.

The clash at Elsternwick Park played in the good spiritof past games between Banyule and Parkside wasan interesting contest before the Red Devils ran outof legs in the last 1/4 . The first 1/4 had plenty of play andParkside led the Bangers by 8 points at 1/4 time.Ruckman Yoksich giving the exciting young JasonHollard and Leo Panjari first use of the ball had theBangers struggling . Only Greg Sutterby and JohnTurnbull were working hard on the ball forthe Bangers. The l/3 qtr was a ripper. Frank Sansonetti, after beingwell beaten by Stephen Grey relieved the firingParkside ruckman Goran Yoksich with good results.Bangers forward Maddison Fidler made a welcomereturn back forthe Bangers with 5 goals, as did MartyPhillips 4 goals was good value. Parkside got gooddrive from their wingers George Panjari and LouInserra all day, however the class of Leigh Holt and

Sutterby, Harte and Fidler proved too much as theBangers ran out comfortable winners by 38 points .Banyule had many good players missing and whenall return the Bangers will be the side to watch if theypl ay to thei r fu l l potential, ?if?. Congratulations to TerryFranklin on being appointed captain of the Red Devils .The game at Parade College between Old Paradiansand Monash Blues was a hard fought affair. After trailingby 14 points at 1/2 time Parade finally got going . Theskill of Matt Phelan whose 6 goals was just terrific,Simon Vincent 5 goals and Nick Ellis 3 goals, werethe focal point of attack whilst for Monash the QuinnBrothers are great gun players, along with the skipperAndrew McGregor and vice captain Greg Hipwellwho always gives his best. Parade scored 12 goals after1/2 time to Monash's 5 goals to set their 31 point victoryup. Good to see Parade ruckman Jamie Gea ry returnto form with the ever reliable Peter Bradender, andBrenden McClements had a steady influence on theParade backline. Parade to get better, Monash needsome improvement, but are hard to beat at home .

Old Brighton at home are really invincible . Bothsides started with plenty of vigour and enthusiasmproviding the spectators with a good contest . Tonnersruckman Nick Per ry was on top of his taller opponents .Rover And re w Pryor had plenty of the ball . OldMelburnians captain centreman Jeremy Nichols wasin the thick of the action . The further the game the biggerOld Brighton's lead increased . Full forward TomHayden 6 goals was unbeatable along with veteran fullback Cameron Lade who makes Footscray's RicKennedy look tame. Old Melburnians lookedunderdone. New coach Paul O'Brien will need toimprove his side in this ara . Newman, Blood and Roseall gave their all for the Old Melburnians' cause, however to no avail as the Tonners ran out easy winnersby 61 points .

TODAY'S PREVIEWOld Melburnians clash with Old Trinity with much

hinging on the outcome. Old Mentonians would nothave pleased coach Be rt Calve rt and after coppingatrashing by 63 points will need to regroup . Coach AlanJohnson must get more from the experienced playersin Allibon, Beardsley and Norman . Old Mentonianson the rebound on their own huge home groundadvantage will make this a close contest . Theexperience and class players of Trinity to win the day.Trinity by 11 points.

The match of the round is on Sunday at ElsternwickPark between University Blues and Old Brighton ina gamethat promises plenty. Both teams had good winslast week, both teams have gun players . Blues lookgood with Yandell back, Gust is a real goer, as isFurphy, Jamieson, Kanisand Frith . Their opponentsare also classy. Perry's clash with Yandell could decidethe match . Pryor, Hayden, Waddington, Grant ar e

C SECTIONby "The Squirrel"

Due to time constraints (work related) I couldn't waitfor the 12 noon Monday faxes to put this report together .Instead, Sunday night won out, and hence the "skinny"review notes . It's only early doors so don't panic justyet you avid readers of the Amateur Footballer we'll justhave to work out a quicker and more simplifiedcommunications system . Club reporters please referto note(s) at end of report .

REVIEW - ROUND 1The Squirrel was a little out of his tree last week

missing the mark with Bulleen-Temp. and Kew, but onlyjust with the latter (1 point) .

Still, 17 rounds to go and I'm sure I'll improve on myperformance as will the 5 first round losers .

My "rap" for the week goes to all those clubappointed field, goal and boundary umpires who toiledlong and hard in the very sweltering conditions for thelove of the club and the game itself . Well done folks !

At Oval 4, Albert Park the Jackers visited the Bankersand found themselves blasted away by half time to thetune of 17 goals to 6. Much to their credit, AJAX appliedthemselves valiantly in the 2nd half to outscore the BankBoys 12 goals to 6 to go down by only 28 points at sirentime. The Bankers need to keep 18 on the field, not the16 or 17 as was the case in the 2nd half whilst theJackers a!though licking their wounds can look forwardto a win in the very near future.

Kew's solitary 1 point win over Fawkner came asno real surrpise as I had declared it a "toss up" job andfor those at the game I'm sure it was the spectacle itpromised to be. The 4 points Kew earned may very wellequate to 8 points in the wash up as not too many visitingteams come away with the biscuits out north . ForFawkner I suppose it's a case of 1 Swallow not makingsummer and just work hard to get their first 4 points .

I reported last week that a big watch be put on theSth Yarra boys and to their credit they didn't let oldSquirrel down. Betcha Tony Orchard had a few notso quiet ales on Saturday evening to toast the clubssuccessful return to 'C' Section . For the Hoes, againit's back to the drawing board and look ahead for thatfirst scalp .

The Sainters certainly left the Blacks in their wakewith a winning margin of 40 points . Word had it that theSaints had recruited very, very well . Rumours aboundpre-season but maybe, just maybe this one will proveto be correct. The Blacks won't be too happy lettingthis game slip away on home turf . I'm confident theywill bounce back quickly.

BulleenTemp. absolutely swamped the Townersby 70 points and with a defeat of that nature and at homeit appears the Thomastown lads have a little homeworkto do even at this very early stage of the season .Certainly doesn't do ones confidence much good Isuggest !

PREVIEW - ROUND 2 (11 April, 1992)Comm . Bank travel across town to do business with

Kew at Victoria Park . In a game that promises

to be a tight tussle from the outset in a match up of 2very good running teams I'm leaning towards the visitorsto have their noses just in front at siren time by a simmargin of 6 points .

AJAX at home to Thomastown will notch up theirfirst 4 points of the season . A quick starting, fast runningteam I expect the Jackers to bounce out to a healthylead and be able to dictate termsfrom then on and saluteby 40 points at days end .

MHSOB's play host to what I expect to be a verydetermined Fawkner squad hellbent on avenging lastweek's slender loss at the hands of Kew. No easyground to acquaint yourself with at Sth Yarra and I'vea feeling that by the time the Northerners have adjustedthe Old Boys will have shut the gate to the tune of 21points .

Ivanhoe journey down Murrumbeena way to dobattle with St Kilda/Sth Caulfield in a gamethat looksto have the goods about it on paper but this scribe thinksthat the Ivanhoe boys will get very little joy from theexperience and drive back home unfortunately for themdown the tube by 36 points.

Bulleen Temp. against Uni Blacks is a game thathas a lot of appeal about it . For the Bullants to get thepoints they will need to reproduce last week's form whilstthe Blacks will need to lift their own game considerably.I'm suggesting that the Blacks will do just that, howeverat home Bulleen-Temp . are extremely hard to toss andthe task at hand might just be to much for Uni . Bullantsby 21 points.

Club reporters . . . sorry about last week's muck up,but could we try a system whereby you contact meanytime Sunday on 850 6964 leaving a message ontape re your game reports .

P.S . Would my fellow scribe "Bitter" Lemon from'D' Section please inform me as to the date, time andvenue of the end-of-season Tipsters Lunch he reportedabout in Issue 1 . And who pays? I'm already 2 winnersahead .

See ya, "The Squirrel" .

300 AT THOr,IASTOW NFrank Farchione starred for Thomastown in his

300th game on April 4. "Fabulous Frank" displayedhis customary skill, courage and determination for 4quarters . Whether kicking seemingly impossible goals,or making long clearing dashesfromthe back pocket,Frank is an inspiration to team-mates and supporters. His laid-back manner and infectious smile have madehim one of the most popular personalities at Thomas-town where (except for a season at Bull/Temp) he hasplayed since he was knee high to the proverbialgrasshopper. Frank has also served the Club as a seniorcommitteman . Congratulations and well done on yourtriple century and many years of service Frank .Thomastown players, members and supporters lookforward to your many more seasons with the Bears .

MHSOB'91 PREMIERSHIP FLAGS UNFURLING "Today, Saturday 11/4/92, marks a magnificent

moment in the celebrated history of our great Club,Melbourne High School Old Boys FC, when the Seniorand Reserve 1991 Premiership Flags are unfurledduring our first supporters luncheon . Our first SeniorPremiership since 1961, our second Reserve Flag ina row, our first ever double Premiership and of particularimportance for the future youth of the Club, our thirdU17 Premiership in successive years'89, '90 and '91,MHSOB pays tribute to all persons who have given somuch fo their time and resources over the years to makethis occasion finally realised . Whilst the business offootball now continues into 1992, and we must striveto consolidate and improve, our success of 1991 willgive great pride and satisfaction for many years to come.

ST KILDA SOUTH CAULFIELDThis Saturday (11/4) at Packer Reserve sees the

unfurling of the C Reserve Grade Flag for St KildaSouth Caulfield AFC. The premiership was a great resultfor the club in its inaugural year and is a tribute to thededication of first year captain-coach Steve Mooney, his capable assistant, Darren Ward and runner FrankMadarassy. The premiership was a fitting farewell totwo of the club's stalwarts John Howard and PeterBuzza. The club is hoping for bigger and betterthingsin 1992 under the guidance of coach Mark G reene(formerly of St KiIdaVFL) and his assistant Greg Farre ll .The team will be led by Peter Kerian and PaulO'Sullivan .

D SECTIONby Peter Lemon

Without even checking the other Tipsters' results, Iguess I'm back in the usual position . Old Ivanhoescored a solid win at the expense of the remarkablyaccurate Rovers; 16 goals were scored in the firstquarter. The Hoes' centre line (Stephens kicked 7 fromthe wing) will again be formidable strength this year ;it was probably the difference in this game. With coachGarry Heatherington the Rovers performedcreditably, with their best being Ed Nlelnjak, M attMcKellar, and Shaun Murphy kicking 6 goals in hisfirst game. The Hoes' highlights were The Dyson Goal- beat 5 opponents for a 50 metre goal ; recruit MartyStewart's 4 goals, and the 400th gameplayed by Alan"Snapper" Haug, in his 27th year with the Club .

St Bede's performed well to take the points againstWilliamstown, with the visitors' greater fitness beinga telling factor in the final term . They trailed by 4 goalsat the long break, levelled with the wind, and finishedon the stronger. Simon Flanne ry (son of former VAFAumpire Trevor Flannery), up from the U19s, put in a Beston Ground performance, and other playersto stand outwere Parsons at half back and Danny Spencer whochipped in with 5 goals .

Like most of the other Clubs in the Section, CaulfieldGrammar and Mazenod combined to prove me wrong .The home side's strong running game, aided by someferocious tackling, saw them outlast the Noddies in ahigh standard clash at Albert Park . The Field's firstquarter was the match winner, leaving AA azenod to playcatch-up football for the rest of the day. Best playersfor the victors were Rob M orrisey (CHB), ClintSimpson (HBF) and Trevor Royals with a regal displayin the Centre, whilst the Noddies' Press Correspondentmust have nodded off, so to speak .

The SKOBs "Cougar" will be crowing - quietly -after their narrowest of wins over Old Camberwell . Thisgame was a credit to both sides, with the lead changingfive times in a frantic, final 15 minutes, in the most difficultconditions. The big - huge - crowd was treated to agreat spectacle and a never-say-die effort from bothClubs which was a credit to Amateur Football . Best forihe SKOBs were new-comers Dave Sheehy and PhilCallil, along with vice-captain Andy Beale .

Old Geelong's home ground advantage (15 out ofbounds on the full to the visitors' 3) had little to do with:heir win, and neither did their disposal. There was somegood tenacity to come back on 3 occasions, however,Nhen Preston looked to have the game in control . TheMBOBs were well served by Andrew Philp at CHB,Craig Smart in the centre, Andrew B rydson (ruck) andRonnie Herbe rt on the back flank . First gamer JamesTaylor put in a pleasing performance forthe OGs, alongN ith Jimmy Lee. And commiserations to back pocketCam Stewa rt who broke a kneecap in three places :at least the match result was some consolation .

THIS WEE KMatch of the day is Old Ivanhoe at home to

Williamstown. The visitors are a tall and high markingteam, and should be up on fitness from last week . Onthe other hand, the home side have an abundance oftalent in the smaller, faster brigade and a lot will dependon which Club is most able to play its natural game. I'mselecting the home side.

St Bede's will be buoyed by their good win away, whilst Preston today cop a long drive for their secondaway game. Likely inclusion of coach Lawson in theteam (and will Geoff Thomas be promoted from theSeconds?!) should help, but I suspect that St Bede'swill be too strong on their home turf .

Mazenod are doubtless unveiling their 1991 ESection Flags at home today ; always good for gettinga bit of adrenalin going, and they will be keen to performbetter than last week. However, I am going to make acontroversial decision in favour of the visitors : they havea lot of new players on board and played well in a greatgame last Saturday.

Old Camberwell and Hampton have similargrounds - large and fairly exposed, so the Roversshould not have much trouble adapting . However, theWells had five top players out last week, and couldexpect to have at least a couple back this week . In aclose finish I expect the Wells to break the ice.

Caulfield Grammarians will be on a real high fortheir clash against Old Geelong : OGs' forward line willhave to be a lot more effective this week if they are tobe a chance, and they need a couple of better playersback . The visitors look too strong .THIS WEEK'S SELECTION SOld Ivanhoe Old Camberwel lSt Bede's Caulfield GrammariansSt Kevin' sPRESS CORRESPONDENTS : Please contact me byMonday 1 .00 pm. by Tom Brain

After 3 months of anticipation Round 1 is finallybehind us, with the heat it still felt like Cricket seasonand tested everybodys fitness . No rt h Brunswickconfirmed all early reports with a big win whileGlenhuntly and newly promoted ANZ started well withconvincing victories.

REVIEWThe Zedders set up their victory with an excellent

first quarter against the strong wind that was blowingat Lakeside. From then on it was a procession as theyplayed some excelent team football to score some 23goals to 7 over the next 3 quarters . The Trobes playedgood football on occasions but could not maintain itagainst the fast running Zedder machine. KevinSegota was an admirable umpire and is certainly moreat home with a whistle than a cricket bat, where thistipster had the pleasure of bowling him forthe "BIG 0".David Steere made a fine debut for ANZ, MannyNicolosi with 9 goals was a fine focal point and RickyM ac and Stevey Vergos were clever running playersfor ANZ while Latrobe could only be happy with theform of young Edwards .

Glenhuntly proved my prediction to be spot on witha very important victory over a disappointing A quinas. It was a great team effort by the Hunters who finishedwith 10 individual qoalkickers. In a game that wassometimes scrappy the Bloods at times looked goodbut made too many unforced errors and turned the ballover too often, to allow the home side to move the ballat will and score at both ends of the ground . Tim Hillwas everywhere for the victors and picked uppossessions at will, Darren "Zacs" Isaacs continuedhis practise form with 5 goals and Mansie was verystrong in defense repeling many forward thrusts. Forthe Bloods, Tarulli, Hodge and Grierson Bros hada bit of a dip.

The Bulleen ground was indeed rock hard and notits usual mudheap. Under the expert guidance of exBulleen-Temp. stalwart Andy Smyth the Bulls are atalented combination of youth and experience, and thisobviously held them in good stead against the Wickswho were very disappointed to lose and in the end werevery pleased to hear the final siren, but should notdespair as one loss does not necessarily make aseason . Bulleen had many good players, Tony Maytook the BOG honours with veterans Craig Veitch andDick Morley not too far behind him, rover SchimmaTsiampas, the "Spider" and Chris O'Connor couldall be proud of their efforts for the losing side .

The inside mail was certainly right on the mark withNorth Brunswick as they completely demoralised aDoveton side that just could not get into the game. Withthe absence of Tony Adhore, Ady Tirchett had afieldday in the ruck setting up plenty of play for everyoneelse. The De Mortons were in excellent touch with 7and 6 goals respectively, the whole side persisted

all day and are certainly on a par, if not better, than lastyear. The Doves are still a bit unsettled with many playersin unaccustomed positions so can only improve . Lirosi,Briffa and Di M arco were other good Northies, StanW ilson was a great trier all day for Doveton along withMurphy and new coach Mark Ladg rove.

Powerhouse were disappointed to lose the othergame in the Lakeside area. Theirfirst half was not verygood and Brunswick were very desperate in their questfor the ball . You must play 4 quarters to win a game offooty these days, I'm sure House maestro GeorgeTsolacos will make his charges very aware of that onthe track this week. Two first game players DominicBaxter and Alan James made outstanding debuts forthe home side, as Derek Desler was his usualconsistent self . Congrats to Jeff Scotland on hisappointment as Club Captain after 150 games. Welldone mate! No news from Dunstan Street-this week .Come on Wato!

PREVIEWAlthough having to make the long trek out to

Ringwood and come up against the Bloods on therebound not a pleasant task at anytime, ANZ will havegained enough confidence from last week to recordvictory No. 2 .

The unlucky Powerhouse travel North tothe hugeUni Oval . They are looking forward to this game andshould win against the Trobbers who really are stillfinding their feet .

Elsternwick today unfurl their 1991 Premiership flag, well done to all associated with it and will be reallypumped for this game and want to win, early form isgood form so today I'll stick with the in form Glenhuntly.

F-TROOPby Peter Hille

Missed the fax last week. In fact, missed the completeround . Should never have read that book by Alan Zimer- it's made me a touch fragile . In fact that photographin the right hand top corner more than does me justice .Perhaps I'll get the older, larger version a!a the ElvisPresley stamp collection .

So F-Troop has sixteen sides and a final six . I canenvisage a national F-Troop competition within 2 to 3years with double-headers in Tasmania and day-nightmatches at Bo ronia Park .

Last week, Flash Phil (substituting for yours truly)proved he couldn't pick his seat in a cinema let alonethe result of a footba!l match . I would have selectedseven out of eight - new chums St Leo's caught meby surprise.

Unfortunately, my lack of pre-season has meant clubreporters (in the main) have been left in the lurch . I'llbe posting some pro-formas to club reporters for faxuse oncethe bunny has paid his visit . In the meantimemy Monday morning fax number is 377 8250 .

G SECTIONby Norm Nugent

Many results proved once again that rumoursabound in March and the only form that counts is thatdisplayed in premiership matches . A 60 per cent resultleaves me a!ot of room for improvement .

G NORT HMarcellin as expected proved too st rong for

Williamstown as the Eagles had a win by 33 points.Had Williamstow n kicked straight they would haveclipped the Eagles' wings . Goalkicking practice shouldbe on the "Town's" practice agenda this week! NorthOld Boys proved too strong for Banyule when theyrecorded a 26 point victory. The North Old Boys' sidecoi]!d well be a side to be reckoned with this season(or so it seems in early April) . Bulleen-Templestowehad a 25 point winning margin over Kew. This c!ear cutvictory made mockery of the alleged player shortagein "Bullant" territory. Eltham gave Camberwell ahiding in their first VAFA game when the Turtles wonby 61 points. It would appear that the "Turtles" willagain be a force in the competition . Therry showedimproved form in 1991 when they had an 8 point victoryover Old Scotch whose players again showed theirdislike of football away from the inner city area . OldWestbourne received a set back in their ambitionswhen the straighter kicking St Bernard's won the evencontest by 5 points .

G SOUT HReigning premiers De La Salle proved too strong

for Monash Gryphons with a 64 point victory at windyMalvern. After half time the Gryphons did better butthe difference in preparation between the sides wasmarked . Old Haileybu ri ansdespite inaccurate kickingrecorded a36 point victory over Collegians while OldXaverians recaptured pre-1991 form by accounting forBloods by 30 points in their Yarra Park encounter . Areturn toformer glory was also made bySt Kevin'swhowere largely untroubled to defeat St Kilda/SouthCaufield by the wide margin of 78 points . M onashWhites had a 36 point victory over Old Melburnianswhich could indicate the University side will enjoy asuccessful season . Old Geelong and Glenhuntly didnot take the field due to lack of players and Mazenodhad the Bye after the withdrawal of Old Paradians .

PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAME S

G NORT HOld Scotch comfortable on their own ground,

should be largely untroubled to defeat Banyule.Marcellin awaitOld Westbourne who must travel intothe far east in an attempt to defeat the soaring" Eagles".Sorry Jeremy to thwart your hopes, but I must selectMarcellin . Eltham who do not trvel well meet the wellprepared North Old Boys on the wide expanses of theGillon Oval . At this stage of the season I am preparedto gamble on a North victory. St Bernard's, on thestrength of last week's victory should be able to

defeat Kew who journey out west to play the Saints .Two of last week's losers meet on the confines of theSwinburne Oval when Williamstown come toCamberwell (in Hawthorn!) . At home I favourCamberwell . Two of last Iweek's winners meet at TimberRidge where Therry visit Bulleen-Templestowe . The"Bullants" form last week warrants me to se!ect themas I am sti!l unsure of Therry talent away from home.G SOUT H

In the match of the day two of last week's clearwinners St Kevin's and De La Salle meet on one ofSt Kevin's home grounds!! After aquality game I expectDe La Salle to emerge victorious. The outcome of theclash between Bloods and Mazenod could wellprovide a guide to the section's season's outcome .Bloods went down convincingly in Round 1 whileMazenod rejoiced with the Bye. Have Bloods reachedthe end of an era? Will M azenod become a threat intheir second season? Today will provide an araswer. Indefence to the talent of Bloods I select them to win . OldMelburnians will relish their hometurf when they playOld Haileyburians who won well last week . Withoutknowledge of the relative strength of the sides I selectOld Haileyburians to win . Monash Whites who willvisit Collegians buoyed by last week's victory shouldbe victorious again as the "Lions" have not roaredloudly for several seasons . Two of last week's losers meetwhen neighbours Monash Gryphons and StKilda/South Caulfield meet. The Gryphons did betterin the second half last week to indicate ArnoldO'Brien's message is succeeding . As St KildaSouthCaufield appear to lack the talent of previous seasonsI select the Gryphons to break the ice in 1992 . OldXaverians who won verywell in their opening encountershould make it two in a row at the expense ofGlenhuntly whose 1992 form remains latent . The otherside Old Geelong can use their Bye to check the skisand the chardonnay! !

® A SECTION continued from page 2 . . .them to trounce the Eagles today. Steve Boysen andTony Zannoni will need a great deal of support in thebackline if M arcellin are to stop North from kicking awinning score. Joe,4mad and Tony Cahill will providethe spectators with a "hard ball" duel in the centre, wherethe game could be won or lost . Tony Furey madea quiet debut for North last week, but he will be betterforthe run . At the final bell North should be well in front- No rt h by 8 goals.

How long has it been since De La lost 2 in a row?Haileybury will be trying to plug holes all over theground as De La attempt to make amends for their 1stround loss to North Old Boys. Brett M ahon}{, ChrisCampbell and Pat Mannix were all well down on formlast week, but they are unlikely to play that poorly again .Col McClounan and Danny Smith are fine on-ballersfor De La who don't mind having a ping at the goals!Simon Meehan will be hoping that Bre tt Steenholdt,Matthew Demattia, Wes Burns and Chris Kraus canemulate their opposition forwards and kick a winningscore - I can't quite see that happening today as DeLa will be fuming over last week, and keen to impressas they unfurl their 1991 flag . De La Salle to win by 5goals.

LJN NDER 19 SECTIONSby Max Lyon

A good start last week to most of our "new" clubswith Old Carey, Uni Blues and Kew all recording goodwins . My tipping results a little down on past averages- only 12 winners out of 17 - but we'll only get better .Gold Star awards to the 5 clubs who contacted me withthe details neededto putthiscolumn together-thanksto Ormond, O. Melb, AJAX, Chirnside Park and O.Brighton . So a reminder to today's winning clubs toring me over the weekend (568 4727) or fax me (6460872) on Monday morning with details of your 2 or 3best players and major goalkicker(s) . If you cop theanswering machine when you ring, just leave thesedetails for me in the 30 seconds available.

REVIEW OF LAST WEEK'S GAMESDIVISION ON E

Thanks to Umpire Hagar (alias Norm Nugent) I amable to say that the De La machine got going after 1/4time and went on to slaughter Marcellin by 20 goals .Scotty claims the Eagles will take a couple more weeksbefore they start to burn . Norm thought De La's bestwas Sheedy, Lester, Chinn and Satchell . Ormondcame from behind and kicked 6 goals to OldMentone's 2 in the last 1/4 to get home from aninaccurate Mentone by a mere 3 points with "Diesel"Wright booting 3 of those last 1/4 majors . Mond's otherbest were "Dobbo" Dobson, Tim Millane and skipperStephen Montgomery . Old Melb, sporting a"sensationally fashionable" new outfit, completelyoutclassed Old Haileybury and could have named 22best players but settled for Thompson (6), Wallace-Smith (4), Henshaw and Branchflower (4) . Old Xavswere too classy for St Bernard's and Mazenod beatthe "under uniformed" Collegians.

SECTION 2 CENTRALNo details from any winning team in this section so

I guess you've all read the results in the dailies . If not, winners were Uni Blues, O. Camberwell, Kew, O .Paradians, Old Carey and Thomastown .

SECTION 2 SOUTHAjax started in great style with a 20 goal win over

last year's unlucky finalists De La Gold . "Old" teammates Josh Hoppe (5) and Andrew Braun wereoutstanding for Jackers. Newcomers Paul Steiner andJulian Kirsner (6) also stood out. Chirnside got homeby 3 goals in a high scoring game against Caulfieldwho I may have under estimated . It took an outstandingeffort from Pembe rton plus the goalsneaking ofPiccioli (9) to get Chirnside home . Old Brighton gothome from Oaklegh by 10 goals, not the 6 reportedin the dailies. Jamie Hendrie at full back and JohnFerrer ruck roving were Tonners' best, whilst theircoach Mike Hill was quite complimentary of the effortsof umpire Lumanovski . Other winners were Hampton,Monash and Old Ivanhoe .

PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMESSECTION ON E

Tones come up for their first encounter with thereigning champs at Keysborough and although theirfirstforay into Div. 1 was commendable last week, theywill find De La much too classyfor them . Marcellin andNodders is a tough one. The Eagles will be bettercoached than they were in the Bulleen encounter lastyear and I think they should improve a smidgin on lastweek and just scrape home. Bernies will bounce backfrom last week's loss and get the points over the M ondswho have never done well out at Keilor . Collegians haveworked well at training this week and "Moods" willcelebrate his 50th (happy birthday John!!) by ensuringall of his Lions have numbered jumpers today. In returnthe Lions will give him a present with the 4 points todayover Gilla's disappointing Bloods. O M s did it easilylast week but face a much tougher proposition todayin Xavs whose win last week was their best start for acouple of years . Xavs to just win .P.S. Warning to both teams not to leavetheir gear in thoseAlbert Park rooms - thieves visit every week .SELECTIONS : De La Blue M arcelli nSt Bernard's Old Xaverians Collegians

DIVISION 2 CENTRA LIvanhoe made a good effortof the tough task against

Thomastown last week, whilst Therry were veryordinary. As the game is at Ivanhoe, I fancy the hometeam . Two good winners of last week - Uni Blues andOld Carey - meet at the Crawford Oval . Both haveworked hard pre-season and gottheirjust rewards lastweek but, as there can only be one winner today, I'llgo for the home team . Blues to win by a point . OldC'well will notch their second win at Black's expenseas will Kew over the Friars . Parade's coach Alex willbe up against his old team OTs, now coached by' Frog'(one of my old "pupils") . Sorry Frog, but I reckon Alexwill be a happier man than you at the end of the day.I find it hard to separate the Bullants and Towners . TheAnts are notoriously slow starters and Towners aregoals worse away from home. I have a hunch they willprove me wrong today and will delaythe Ant's winningstreak by another week .SELECTIONS : Ivanhoe Uni Blues KewOld Camberwell Old Parade Thomastown

DIVISION 2 SOUT HThe result of the Scotch and NIeIb High game will

give us an indication which one is likely to struggle thisyear as both were disappointing last week . I think Steve'sHigh boys can open their account day. Jackers willbe much too good for Oakleigh and I expect theMonash Students to kick on from their good win lastweek and get another 4 points at De La's expense.Caulfield visit the "wind tunnel" and, although theyhave improved on last year, I can't see them upendingthe Tonners today. The other 2 games are toughies .

Page 19: ;I- uoal+...the St Bernards' defence possesses but be aware that the Saints will not be handing this game over on a plate Ormond by 20 points. Old Scotch will have their hands …

Both Chirnside and Old Hoes won last week -Chirnside were awayand Old Hoes at home . l expectthe home ground avantage to give Chimside the pointstoday. Last year's "unlucky" team, Bedas, were justbeaten last week whilst Rovers had a good win . Logictells me to go for the Rovers but I have a hunch thatBedas must be better than last week and I'll goforthem .SELECTIONS: MHSOB AJAX St Bede'sO.Brighton Monash Chirnside Park

Thanks to Collegians for the lunch last Saturday -always enjoyable at the Trott .

Reminder to the 21 clubs that have not submittedtheir lists of officials . It will be a costly exercise if youdon't do it before the next game .

Finally, nice to see Peter Lemon acknowledge thathe owes me a"slab" - I'd rather the slab than a chequethough Peter. The challenge is on again from today toPeter and "Halfer" if they want it . No challenge for theVillain, Hilly and Hagar as none of them have coughedup with the TWO slabs they owe me for 1990 and 1991 .

DENTAL HEALTH SERVICES -

WHO ARE THEY?Vic Health has, for the past season, been the major

sponsor of the Victorian Amateur Football Association, and in conjunction with its agency, Dental Health Services, has promoted the health message ,"KEEP TEETH FOR LIFE - WEAR A M OUTNGU,QRD"

Once again, Vic Health and Dental Health Servicesare pleased to be associated with the VAFA in 1992 .

Many of you may not be familiar with what DentalHealth Services is and what we do. Therefore, we havetaken this opportunity to give you some insight into whatDental Health Services is all about .

In essence, Dental Health Services is the "schooldental service" and you may recall visits from the servicewhen you or your children were attending primary school .

Dental Health Services is a branch of the StatewideOperations Division of the Health Department .

Our mission is "to ensure, through the provision ofregular dental services and dental health promotion thatVictorian children have the basis to maintain healthynatural teeth for life". Basically, we offer dental servicesto every primary school in the State on a two year basisfor children in grades prep, one, two, three and four andto children in grades five gnd six whose parents are healthcare card holders . We place special emphasis on childrenwith high dental, needs who tend to be from lower socio-economic areas . We aim to see children in this categoryon 12 month recall .

In 1991, over 130,000 primary school children in thi sState were seen, and treated if necessary, by DentalHealth Services .

Dental Health Services has about 360 staff of which80% are clinic al staff . The m ain operators are dental

therapists who we train at the Dental Therapy Schoolat our Headquarters in St. Kilda Road . We are organisedinto 14 Area Dental Teams throughout the State .

As you may know, the prevalence of dental diseaseinthe permanentteeth of children hasfallen dramaticallyin recent years ; however, the extentto which individualchildren experience dental disease varies considerably. Our goal is to virtually eliminate dental cavities in thepermanent teeth of most Victorian primary schoolchildren within 5 years. To do so, we will be placing moreemphasis on preventive measures and dental healthpromotion .

Being associated with the VAFA will help us with ourdental health promotion, especially in the area of dentalsafety and the use of professionally f itted mouthguards.

Dental Health Services is dedicated to improving andmaintaining the dental health of our young children -starting them on the road to having good teeth for life .

The VAFA - and the emphasis it places on "family"involvement in the game - assists us to get our dentalmessage across to junior players through theElsternwick VicKick Clinic, senior players andspectators, many of whom are parents today or will beparents in the future.

We are particularly keen to see individual teams inthe VAFA contributing in their way to promoting gooddental messages such as mouthguard usage .

Dental Health Services is different to the usualcommercial sponsor in that we are not so muchinterested in promoting our name as good dental health .

all experienced good players and with a slight edgein fitness I lean to Old Brighton (fancy picking theTonners away from home), under the guidance of astutecoach M ark Parker to takethe initiative and the match .Old Brighton by 11 points .

The Parkside and W hitefriars game at Pitcher Parkshould prove most interesting as Parkside attempt tore-group after last week's loss and the loss of severalgun players . W hitefriars made all the other sides inB grade sit up and take notice that they will indeed bevery competitive. What the Friars lack in height theycertainly replace with pace, class and courage .Parkside's big men are the key to the game . Yoksich(brilliant last week), Sansonetti and Bradley down lastweek are great club people and great players can swingthe game to the Devils . Whitefriars' pace playersJenkins, Carbone, Crowe and Philip will all worry theslow Parkside defence. Parkside's height will worryWhitefriar's coach Geoff Reiley, but the pace ofWhitefriars will cause Bruce Ferguson to havenightmares . Whitefriars by 15 points .

Monash, disappointing last week, clash with thecocky Banyule who had a good win over Parkside .Banyule can still improve their new players, MarkMcDonald, Fidler and White will improve further withmatch play. I believe Monash legendary coach RayFord will make Monash more competitive with moregames underthe Students' belt . Banyule coach JohnSimpson will not letthis game slip. I think Banyule by19 points .

Old M elburnians playing at the Junction Oval, hostOld Paradians in yet another vital match . OldMelburnians need to bounce back from theirdisastrous start to the season last week against OldBrighton . Old Paradians got better as the matchprogressed against M onash . Young players Waymanand Pannam are players of the future along with theexperienced Considine, Brabender, Gea ry, Philipand Way gives coach Mick M ulvahall plenty of depth .Too little was left to too few last week and a big turnaboutwould be required by Old M elbumians . Old Paradiansby 23 points .

THIS WEEK'S SELECTIONSOld Trinity BanyuleOld Brighton Old ParadiansWhitefriarsBLACK LIST: Old Melburnians, Old Paradians,University Blues, Whitefriars . These teams failed tocorrespond with the Villain . Please let me know thisyear's captain and vice, also last year's 1, 2 & 3 B&F.N .B. Following the 1991 promotion of mouthguard usageamongst VAFA players, Dental Health Services will beconducting 2 follow up surveys in 1992, to assess theeffectiveness of the continuing promotional program .The brief surveys will be carried out at the beginning(March) and at the end (August) of the football season .

Envelopes containing a questionnaire, explanatoryletter and a stamped, self addressed envelope havebeen sent to some clubs.

As responsible Club Secretaries, we need totalsupport for this survey to be accurately and effectivelyconducted . The VAFA and the member clubs could notpossibly afford the risk of losing Vic Health as a majorsponsor. The financial impact would be disastrous onall concerned in the VAFA. Vic Health's decision tocontinue a sponsorship agreement with the VAFA willbe largely influenced by how.effective the promotionof the health message is conducted .

Please stress to your players the importance ofcompleting and returning the survey BEFOREFriday 24th April, 1992 .

Thank you on behalf of the VAFA and DHS for yourco-operation and support .

COACHES CLIPBOARDedited by

Mike McArthur -Allen

A different writer each week will contribute an article. This weekSimon Meehan from Old Haileybury has contributed the following:

As the Senior coach of a football club, making it through the pre-season schedule is a wonderful feeling . Theretends to be a huge relief once the season starts and the normality of each week becomes a much simpler task .

In Amateur football the coach throughout pre-season takes on many roles due to the fact that helpers can behard to find and most of the planning has come from his head .

By the time the actual season gets underway, the faces have re-appeared and the demands on the coach havefocussed towards teaching the players his team structure and reinforcing the "fundamentals" of the game . Thefundamentals of football arethe basic skills and team work which must be executed and adhered to in every game .If we step up a level and wish to succeed, it means we must be able to do the basic fundamentals at a faster rateof speed under a greater level of opposition pressure.

"The Football Fundamentals "1 . Disposal Skill s

The more you turn over the ball the less chance you have of winning . Players must practise correctly to reacha level of skill which minimises errors and gives confidence to team mates .

2 . FitnessThis includes physical and mental fitness . One must have properly designed training programmes . Correctfood and drink intake and plenty of sleep and rest are essential . To obtain a level of fitness it requires a greatdeal of self sacrifice and discipline.

3. Teamwor kThe coach mustteach and advise ensuring all are working together. Teamwork is made up with communication,co-operation and co-ordination . Lazy, selfish and individual players cannot be good team players and neverunderstand the necessity of teamwork .

4 . Play On Footbal lKnowing how, when and why we play on is something the coach mustteach . This basic fundamental is somethingthat "slows" when players become tired or lack confidence in others around them .

5 . Adapting to ConditionsA good player will adaptto the conditions of each game and thus create the maximum advantage for his team .The differeing conditions can include climatic and umpiring - each being of vital importance .

6 . Attitud eThis is the player's state of mind made up of many components - Courage, Performance, Effort, Motivation,Pressure, Concentration and Confidence. Without the correct attitude, success is not obtainable .

The coach who can teach and have his side perform these fundamentals the best will be the one who standsvictorious at the end of the season . The objective of each game is to outscore the opposition . There is no magicformulae. However, the side that wins in most positions and makes the least number of errors will usually win . InAmateur football the most skilled side usually wins and performs the football fundamentals the best .

Simon MeehanSenior Coach, OHAFC

PLEASE SEND THEMEMBERSHIP FORMS BACK TO CRAIG AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AT THE ADDRESS SHOWN ON THE FORMSO YOU CAN BE JOINED UP AND RECEIVE THE BENEFITS ESPECIALLYTHE COACHING UPDATE MAGAZINE .

VAFA RULE CHANGES FOR 199 2The VAFA for the 1992 Season has made a few rule

changes that players, coaches, umpires and officialshave been duly advised about through written andverbal communications. However, the VAFA supporterwho trots along to barrack for his or her beloved Clubmay also like to know of these important rule changesto avoid any confusion arising and hopefullyto also givethem a feeling of being involved .

The most significant change is that the 50 metrepenalty that has been so damaging given thedimensions of most VAFA grounds has now beenreduced to 25 metres . When applied this is still punitiveand no coach will accept undisciplined players causingthis penalty to disadvantage his team but at least it isa penalty that is an appropriate distance and will cutdown ontheextremes of seeing a penaltytaking a playerfurther downfield than the average player can kick theball . The other rule change sees the abolition of theline across the centre circle so that now bothruckmen can run in to contestthe bounce from the sameside of the circle if they so desire. This overcomes thedisadvantage at the centre bounce of ateam that doesnot have a very tall ruckman and, after all, it was theonly ball-up on the ground where this artificial situationexisted .

Some messages regarding dress requirements :o Umpires and members of the Executive will reportbreaches of dress requirements and clubs will beautomatically fined for these breaches .• Interchange steward - white coat, VAFA armband .• Runners-orange shisrt, tracksuit pants or shorts (notto be the colour of other participating team) .• Medical Staff - white top, VAFA armband .• Trainers and drink carriers - white tops, VAFAarmbands, tracksuit pants or short (not to be the colourof other participating team) .o Playing jumper - must have V logo, numberedcorrectly, home or away shorts, club socks .• Bike shorts - flesh coloured or identical to shorts'colur being worn .o Field/Boundary umpires (club supplied) - VAFA shirt, white shorts, navy socks. Other league's umpiring gearis not acceptable.• Goal Umpires - white coat, 2 flags (45 x 45 cm)

Each week again this season the Trophy Town/Sunday-Hearld Player of the Round will beannounced with the Player of the Year selected fromthe weekly nominations . This Sunday's paper willannuonce a North Old Boys' star as the first winnerfor the season . (See Sunday's paper for details .)
