■/‘:‘r h0l°'l an very glad that you wrote to ... beceue. I .10 = found lhc other d», too short, and you had to be in by 6p.. end it ended uP that we didn’t talk or even have time to talk.

You will remember that while you were in Hodder B 1 - <oke to ' o u r Horn and she was to givd you a messaCe that when your detention v ..s over, tk. it wan thought thht it would be bent if you continued 'our studies, and that the novenent would help you to get a burcary.^1 explained to your » n that the national staff thought, that an you had now been detained twice, it would not be advisable for you to continue with the noven.nt and run the risk of your being d.tW.en s third tice, that this night break you. Your noth.r liked this ides.

It was in Keadovlands that we spoke.0

So that wan the eeanins of what I haid tn you on the Mien, that whatever we give you, is not to b e ^ . g s r d e d ^ -salary' but ns ■sup-.crf. And that was what I ceant Urp, that the r.ov -cannot pay you a salary, for 5 years, and that youshould try and ret

, sonfi vork. In other wor'ds, as fsr as the national is concerned, you U r e no longer working as an organiser for the nce.ent. This did no, leone iron ne, but fron'high up. However, this d « o not nean that yo. ‘he abandoned, financially. The explications of your getting bn^.ed had1 nothing to do with this. The decision was that when you were re v o u w . r e to be given an opportunity of doSng your ..trie, and that . novenent would help you in whatever way you could. I was nerely tol carry thin decision to you, snd I thought 1 had done ao, through you

mother., ' • , .•So the money I mentioned, R20 per week, was not salary tx

the movement. It is a gift because you have been banned, and have t live somehow. National does not know of that pro.ise I made to you. was made on my own' initiative. • • ■ .

‘ About your salary while ia detention. Tea, you should s -et that. If you could tell me when you last go t paid I can vork i

' 1 wanted to work it out with you the other day, bu t as you mention 'ran out. However, it should be, as y<5u say, according to your neec The movement was quite upset after your first detention when;you tc the salary for several months, and appeared t o b . b r o k e after a wet two. It got the impression that that was not ’according to needs'.

<■> ,* ' O i

:Jo, it woe bocnuuo of the row wo had when you case '.ut the first time that 1 was a bit afraid to raise the subject. Then you g:.vc cc the ini predion that you did not want to talk about 'needs', but just wanted everything that you would have had if you had not beon in detention.Vo s.vc an argument, I agreed, and gave it all to you.

\e

%V

•I’m afraid that this was one of the reasons that national of.ice eo;;le are not giving you their full moral .support. They have gained

the impression that you are not *wholeheartedly behind the movement, and 'that there are things in your vision that are more important to you than the movement. So this is a reason why they suggested that you do your matric, that your dedication to the movement was sufficient for a mender, but not sufficient to be an organiser, who is supposed to .acrif his life for the movement for the tine that he is organicer. They felt that as they sacrifice themselves, and take.pay when there is pay, and

♦beg fron outside when there is no pay, that you. were not-pulling yc ir full waight. They were very surprised for example, that when you were being* fed by the police, that you still wanted your full salary even though you needed no money for food. And part of your originr.l budget was of course for food. If you dod not give any money to the house in Springs for the food you received while eating here, then that money* should, in justice, have not been taken from the movement in your salary It is these things, asong others, that upset people. I have been in the middle, and have tried to smooth things out. But I have been unable to answer fcis argument that your interests and your heart have not been fully 'in the movement.

So your money is still due to you, it is just that I explaining the reason, why and how it came about that you upset’people. ^

Another reason is that, because of a lack of discipline in the»movement, and people at the base doing their own thing, that it was

decided to enforco strict discipline. By this is meant, that decisions i made by the dedicated people together, the experienced people. In othe: words, no one makes decisions by themselves, and no one Bakes decisions at the base. Ve in the Transvaal got very highly driticised because we gave loo much responsibi? ity to new' members, who did not yefunderst; about the YCV. R0r example the row^ about the venue for the rally. It should have boon fought out in the office, betwaon you and Thololo, wit' bringing in all thooo people fro» the various groupo, who had only been about ono year in YCJ anyway. That is just an exanplo..

• 0 G 0 j 5 6At the moment, there is no one from the Transvaal on the

I'Citional Executive. And we have been toid that until we brine o^rc.lvc into line with the rest of the movement, and get down to real YC ’.l

programmes, we are not true YCW. For example, the rest of the country ic now doing an enquiry on •DK1KKIRG*. We have not etarted this here yet. bccause of objections rrom the base. But national Bays they have •the right to tell us what our enquiries should be. And that our enquiries should be the sane as the rest of the country. They see grea significance in the fact that the majority of 'the arrests were in the Transva.l.

*e have also bctI> asked to avoid any use of the word ’black’, and stick to the word .’worker’ . Every tine I use the words ’black work I Cet jumped upon. It is just worker. In no other country in the worl does the YCW distinguish people by colour. The speech at the rally was disastrous for the movenent, because it subordinated the struggle

- °f th° workerc t0 becone free of exploitation, to tho struggle for vha* was'called ’black struggle*. Ve are never again going to invite that ’ r<an to give a talk at a YCW gathering.

Another thing, The YCW does not believe in violence. Thatdoes not just mean violence a5ainst people, but violence against thingsas well. So no paid organiser can be someone who can compromise t h e /movement, in this natter of principle We have a nethod which solves thi.Without Sat no-, t U ^ " U U . V , that « uee violence, andso we have to purge people who hgrr au iu m l ^ d violence or used violencefrom positions of responsibility in the movement. National made a preststatement about this use of violence, as being contrary to the methodsof YCW. We have to make sure that members understand this. That meansthat in future, organisers will be asked about this, before being accept as organisers. .

What I an trying to say, ia that the police seem to have gaim a wrong impression of YCW, and we are trying to put that right. Anyone who dees not like what national aaya, ia free therefore to leqve t h e " ' novenent. In future, when national de.cidea on things, then that will" b*V the policy. It can only be changed when a new national Is elected, and if it is contrary to world YCV, then it will be rejected even if the na; here vote for it. Then the only way it can be changed is at a world council. This 1 b what they oean by discipline.

iio, l-jola, thio might explain to you why National told nc to let you know that you are no longer an employee of the ooveccnt.I'm sorry if I did not r.ako it clear before, but I was trying to oake things easy for you in your trouble.

The coney can now be worked out, if you give oe the details.I an still battling to do the books. No one did then this year, even before the detentions. And 1 don't know'citxa .where we stand. So I. will need your help in this. ‘ If you did not understand that you were no longer working for the movement, then your salary must get paid to the end of January. But after that, nothing from the movement. The ^20 per week that I. referred to until you get a job, will be money that I personally will find. You will not be loft to starve.

l ‘a sorry to have had to write like this, but it is better if it is said clearly, than if it hangs on for ever. Thank you for tOlyou have done. *
