I. The Renaissance

-means “rebirth”

-renewed interest in Greek & Roman culture

-secular time

1) humanism= believed that the individual & human society were important

2)literature= writers began writing in vernacular- more people were reading their work

-Dante= The Divine Comedy

3.) Printing Press= changed the world

-Johannes Guttenberg= 1450’s invented printing press

-this made books more easily available

-more people learned to read

-Gutenberg Bible= 1st book printed

4) Leonardo da Vinci= scientist, inventor, engineer, & painter

-painted the Mona Lisa & The Last Supper

-dissected corpses to study anatomy

B) The Reformation=

- During the Middle Ages the Catholic Church became very powerful

-needed money so they began selling indulgences

-indulgences were forgiveness for sins -this outraged many people including Martin

Luther

Martin Luther= responded to this practice w/ his 95 theses & nailed them to the door of the church

-he wanted to reform the church -he wanted people to rely on the Bible & not

priests -this began the Protestant Reformation & his

followers were the 1st denomination of Protestants: Lutherans
