From the Counselor—Trait of the Month-Positive Attitude Lyndsay Morris

As we are closing out another school year, it is important to take note of our attitude. After all, when a chapter closes or something ends, it gives us time to reflect, learn, and grow from all that we have ex-perienced. A school year is full of lots of hard work, meeting new friends, math, reading, accomplishing new milestones, having disagreements with others, assemblies, tests, and the many ups and downs that come with everyday life. In reflecting on our experiences it is important to remember certain situa-tions, but more importantly it’s critical to remember the way we handled the situations. We all know that sometimes we don’t have control over things that happen in life, but we do have control over the way we respond. Thomas Jefferson once said, “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” A positive attitude can turn a storm into a sprinkle just by your own thinking process. You get to choose your attitude for every situation. On another note, I would like to give a huge THANK YOU to all Ilalko students, parents and staff for a great year and making my first year as an elementary counselor such a positive experience! You are all amazing and I feel so privileged to call this daily work my “job”. Your children teach me something every day and I truly care for each one of them! I am looking forward to many more fantastic years to come at Ilalko Elementary School! Have a fantastic summer.

Ilalko Family Movie Nights Trisha Schulz

Thanks to all the families that attended ILALKO FAMILY MOVIE NIGHTS this school year. Wreck It Ralph, Brave and Madagascar 3 on the big screen was a lot of fun! Sam's Club generously sponsored our conces-sion items and all the proceeds from concession sales help to pay for all the great programs the PTA spon-sors for Ilalko. Your purchases are greatly appreciated at these events!

My special thanks goes to everyone that volunteered at Movie Night. It would not be possible to pull off these events without all YOUR help. And SO MANY in attendance just pitched in and helped fold chairs, sweep the floor, and took care to recycle their trash properly. What amazing HUSKY spirit!

Thanks GREEN TEAM for providing the recycling containers and helping to keep this event GREEN.

Enjoy your summer and I'll see you back at the next Ilalko Family Movie Night!

Principal’s Corner – Dress Code 2013

Tim Carstens

With the weather getting warmer, it is a natural inclination to break out the summer wardrobe and pack away all of the sweaters, gloves, and hats. My wife and I have started the closet conversion ourselves. When doing so, we need to keep in mind that there are things that are okay to wear at home and on the beach that are not part of the dress code here at school.

At home, it is perfectly fine for me to wear my tank tops that swoop down to the waistline to show off my huge biceps and ripped abs, but that is not something that I would wear at school or would expect any of our students to wear either.

I am very concerned with even tanning and reducing the tan lines as much as possible, but the dress code at school prohibits the wearing of tank tops or dresses with shoulder straps that are less than two adult fingers wide (three student fingers). Again, even though I would like to show off my abs at school, bare mid-riff shirts are not appropriate for school.

And about shorts. Shorts are fine to wear to school. In fact, many of our students wear shorts year round. When the weather warms, it is tempting to wear shorty-shorts, but again, this is not appropriate for school. The test for the length of shorts is to have the students hold their arms at their sides. If the shorts extend beyond the student’s fingertips, they are good to go. If the shorts stop before the fingertips, the shorts should go and the student should find something else to wear.

Now for the most controversial topic: footwear. While some days, the weather may seem tropical, school is not the place for students to wear flip-flops. There are many reasons for this, safety being the primary. When students are engaged in physical activity on the playground or in gym, flip-flops become leave-behinds. Students are more subject to trips, cuts, and scrapes, not to mention the possibility of losing them on the playground.

So, what do we do? The first thing is to check what your child is wearing each day and approve the outfit. If a student gets by your scrutiny, we do have some measures that we will take. If it is a shirt or strap is-sue, the student will be asked to wear a jacket over the top. If there is not a jacket available, we will pro-vide a large t-shirt for the day. In the case of shorts that are too short, a warning will be given. A second offense will result in a call going home to request new clothes. The same would apply for the issue of shoes.

I hope this helps clarify any questions that come up regarding dress code. Enjoy the weather, but dress the students for school.

Attention Summer Readers!!! Summer Break is around the corner and I know it's very EXCITING!!! Lots of camping, beaches, parks to go to, going on vacation trips, and especially spending time with your family. As you will be doing all these FUN things, don't forget to take 15-30 minutes in a day to take a book and READ, or have your parents read to you. It's very IMPORTANT to keep reading during the summer so you don't forget what you have learned during the school year. Look for information and forms coming home regarding the Summer Reading Olympics program. Remember, RECORD the minutes you read or read to for each day on the form and return it in the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.. If you lose your reading sheet during summer break, you can also access it through our Ilalko Website. Here's the MEDAL breakdown:

Students who read 1500 minutes over the summer will receive a Gold Medal.( Average 30 min/5 days a

week)

Students who read 1000 minutes over the summer will receive a Silver Medal.(Average 20 min/5 days a

week)

Students who read 500 minutes over the summer will receive a Bronze Medal.(Average 15 min/5 days a

Staff Appreciation finished the year with a South of the Border Lunch for our teachers and staff in May. This lunch was the fifth of the events we sponsored this year (the others were a Breakfast in September, an Italian Dinner in November, a Soup/Salad Lunch in January, & a Potato Bar in March).

None of these events would have been possible without the generous contributions of the numerous parents who made dishes or donated food items. We were en-tirely blown away with the quality of the items and the dedication of the parents who participated this year. You truly made a difference to the teachers and staff! Thank you for helping this committee accomplish their goal of letting the teachers know they are ap-preciated and supported by the parent community.

Have a great summer!

Earning for Learning Vinnette Lang

As many of you know, the past five years we’ve been extremely lucky to win funds from the Supermall’s Earning for Learn-ing event (which school’s can win up to $10,00.00). Each year it gets more difficult to win, with it’s increasing participation from other schools. This past year we won 4th place (winning $1,500.00) out of 296 schools that participated, thanks to all our Ilalko families and staff. Because of these winnings we have been able to purchase many wonderful items for our school from playground equip-ment, computer lab furniture, the IXL program, and so many other items. We are asking our Ilalko families to look out for this event happening about mid August (the event usually starts August 15 to October 5th), maybe even waiting to do your back to school shopping until this event starts. You can look for dates and details at the SuperMall’s becoming The Outlet Collection website:

http://www.outletcollectionseattle.com/earningforlearning

You can turn in your receipts at the Customer Service Desk under Ilalko or save your receipts and we will be collecting them at school!

Want a super easy way to maximize points from purchases you make?

Purchase a Mall gift card before you go shopping and earn triple points for the gift card purchase, and then also receive points for all the purchases made with the gift card. Do this on a Monday or Tuesday and watch the points really add up fast!

Thank you for all your support!
