ED’S NOTE

Launching into ISSUE 10 I was sitting with a pot of frustration & anger boiling in the base of my belly, I was literally residing in p*ssed off Ville. My predicament came with the knee jerk reac-tion I was choosing to take on the behaviour of humans I was witnessing at the time. Being deeply involved with Amnesty In-ternational it is difficult not to get caught up emotionally in the actions - or lack of action - of others nationally and around the globe. Here is a little taste of how my original Editor’s note may have gone…..

“I AM presently one month and a random week out of releasing issue 10. I sit here at my tiny cluttered desk with Cat Power playing what I need, a strong yet somewhat defeated melody from my 5 year olds pink ghetto blaster [yes, I really am that uncool]. I don’t normally write my Ed’s note before I actually start an issue, BUT! After a few white spirits and a dash of coca-cola on a balmy Friday night I was hit, with what I like to call, the issue missile. A piece of paper floating through the universal wind destined to envelope my entire face, forcing my com-

plete and undivided attention. It is I imagine, a sheet of Yr 9 foolscap, the title carrying my best handwriting, the body somewhat acceptable but tethering at the end ….and the end? Well it is in big bold print, created by layers of forced black biro, tearing through the page at points. It’s the ending and yet the beginning of each and every issue. This issue we have heard the call of “first world problems”, as my teenage son likes to sarcastically call it. If you are not familiar with this term, simply it’s like this. We whinge about s*it that doesn’t count. It is in its most honest form PATHETIC in comparison to the atrocities and injustice millions of humans are

faced with around the world daily. But don’t worry dear reader we won’t bore you with the dilemmas of third world problems, we will instead joyfully take the p*ss out of the First world ones…..”

So yes, I was a little caught up in my emotions. It was a few week’s later that I chose to take my hands off the I AM wheel and ask the universe to put the issue together, while I threw my aggression and frustration into a random art obsession, collage. You will find the explosion of my inner most fear, anger, anxiety & concern on the front cover and centre of this issue. I will leave you to decide the meaning of my madness. In the meantime, enjoy the issue. We have a wonderful group of contributor’s onboard now all with a talent and guru status in their own chosen I AM field.

Thank you for dropping by, we hope you enjoy your stay. Sam

Sensationally SINGLE

INSTALMENT 3.

So we’ve had some time now to accept that we are a glori-fied ONE, and we have taken the time to reflect on things that may have changed about ourselves during the relation-ship that now resides in the dumpster. It is now time to in-troduce yourself to the outside ‘one’ world.

Keep reading, because this is where the F.U.N begins. I want you to grab a piece of paper & a pen, yes right now, go grab it. I want you to think about all of the things you enjoy doing, big or small, it doesn’t matter. It can be eating ice cream, taking a bush walk, shopping with friends or dancing the night away. Just think freely and write. Here is your mission; I want you to pick 3 things from this list, the TOP 3, and take the first steps to actually doing them. Google is your best friend, it will point you in the

right direction and hook you up to that little something you love doing. If you can’t find the courage just yet to set out on your own, find a group of people already swimming in the ‘this is what I love’ pool. There is an array of groups out there in the virtual world ready to welcome you in, they sur-prisingly like your thing too. Meetup.com is a great place to find local clubs and groups of people sharing the same in-terests and meeting regularly. Word of warning: Do the ap-

propriate research to confirm the group is legitimate and DO NOT use it as a tool to snare your next soulmate, I repeat; DO NOT! Your mission at this very moment is to become completely head over heels in love with being a ‘one’. You need to fall back in love with YOU. Okay, you have your top 3 in front of you. Ask yourself these questions; What do I need to make this happen? What sort of time will I require? When would be a good time in my coming diary to schedule it in? Do I love myself enough to give myself what I truly want and deserve?

Yes, the last question is a deal sealer. If you love yourself enough you will choose to treat yourself right. There is no maybe in this question, no fence sitting, it is either YES or NO. Ask yourself honestly, do I love myself enough to give myself what I truly want? >>>

08 / iammagazine.com.au

By State of Felicity

Page 9: I AM magazine ISSUE 10 2013

>>> Now let’s throw another spanner in the works. It is not uncommon to be sitting there right now thinking, “Sh*t, I have no idea what I truly want!”. I am here to tell you, finding what you ultimately want in life is not possible if you plan to see what’s at the top of the moun-tain while you are still standing at the base. It is all about small steps and the gradual climb. You will discover what you truly want, on your journey to the top. The first thing

you have to do is decide to take the first step. Here’s a hint; take your 3 top things you love to do and start there. Your first step may be eating ice cream from your local Gelatissimo or deciding to walk along the beach 2-3 times a week. Again, it is the journey that will reveal the answer. SOF.

Get comfortable with sitting solo. Trust me, you look more interesting sitting alone and if you can master the confidence of being one, a lot of two’s may wish they were either banging

you or being you. Nerves can be settled with a book or a laptop, sit comfortably at your table for one and read or write. When the nerves have settled remember to lift your gaze from your decoy and peruse the surrounding area, take a breath and be present in your location. On the ar-rival of your coffee, take it as an opportunity to put your

book or laptop to the side and be one with the place you have chosen to sit. People watching is a much loved & desired past time, for one reason; you get to really watch people. Also, I want you to feel grateful that this time is your own, no need to be the ears to your indulgent friend who can’t seem to let life’s dramas go, you can just sit and be at one with your caffeine.

Yes, YOU can change the world

St George & Sutherland Shire Amnesty meet on a Tues-day evening once a month at a local Sutherland club to discuss and plan action steps to create awareness of global issues & violation’s of basic human rights. They are a group of everyday local folk united in the belief that they can and will assist in global change. This is what they’re taking action on this month…….

WHAT THE

Fighting for the rights of Afghan Women.

Afghanistan is currently one of the worst places to be a

woman. Girl’s schools are attacked, girl-child marriage is common and more females die during pregnancy and childbirth than almost anywhere in the world. Women activists have been killed and violence against girls and women is rampant. There has been significant progress for women since 2001 and the fall of the Taliban, including enrolment in all tiers of formal education, an increase in life expec-

tancy and the number of seats reserved for women in the Afghan National Assembly and provincial councils. But, these steps forward are threatened by the current peace and reconciliation talks between the Taliban, Afghan and US governments, and in the context of the imminent withdrawal of most international security forces – includ-ing our own. Right now, the Afghan and US governments are holding peace talks with the Taliban and other insurgent groups.

And, the Australian Government is about to determine how to spend the $1b in aid funding they have commit-ted to Afghanistan over the next five years. This is our chance to ensure that women’s rights are not traded away and that supporting Afghan women is front and centre of Australia's commitment. Diversity

13 / iammagazine.com.au

On March 23rd the St George & Sutherland Shire Amnesty Group were involved in a community outing to Symbio Wildlife Park to celebrate Harmony Day. 42 people attended , with most being settled refugee families residing locally. The families have resettled here after fleeing countries such as; Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Paki-stan,Ethiopia, China & India. While the Sutherland Shire does not house as many refugee families as other parts

of Sydney, there is still a great need to provide support services to those families creating a life here. Regular community outings, like the recent Symbio event, is a great opportunity to welcome new families and provide support to resettled refugees with the additional value in creating a more inclusive St George & Sutherland Shire community. A community that celebrates diversity.

Why Schoolwork can be a bit tough for students with

English as their second language, so this important pro-gram provides a bit of extra support to ensure that these young people from Kindergarten to year 12 get more out of their education. This extra support helps reduce the isola-tion that students might feel especially if they have recently settled in the area and started a new school. The program also provides social outings during school holidays and

healthy snacks before the students start their study.

Diana Salmon is a stay at home mum happily residing in Miranda. She is a mother of five, and a grandmother to five, she is also the founder of the beautiful hand crafted children’s label, Polly & Molly.

Diana’s childhood was enfolded in a swathe of divine fabrics and intricate lace, due to her mother’s success-ful career as a dressmaker of couture in the 50s. Grow-ing up she was surrounded by creation and the art of unique designer fashion, her passion was evident even as a young child and now drives her to create hand crafted original designs that make up her current in-fants & girl’s vintage inspired collection. Featuring one of a kind fine details and made only from genuine French, Italian, Swiss and European vintage lace, with the added touch of hand beading on many pieces.

Founded in 2010, Bonita Glamour became the creative focus of the ever playful, confident and flirty Naomi Robinson. The label is a reflection of the creator who had spent many hours, pre-Bonita Glamour, searching for swimwear that refused to conform to mainstream trends. Bored and frus-

trated with what she had found, her mission to create affordable yet glamorous swimwear, began.

FROM THE SOURCE—NAOMI ROBINSON

“Swimwear can be liberating or daunting depending on the individual. I wanted a swimsuit which was both glamorous and sexy for those fun summer beach and pool parties, a piece that would seize the attention of the people around

me, for all the right reasons. I have always had a passion for accessories and embellishments and it was during a trip to Colombia, a country array to raw yet brightly coloured geography, that I developed the inspiration of swimwear that would feature vibrant colours and intricate embellish-ments, and so my passion came to life.”

“Many of the designs boast hand or machine stitched embellishments, and are available in sizes 8 to 16. The suits are a European cut, somewhere between a Brazilian

and a full American cut - they are little bit sexy, without exposing too much. Above all, these bikinis are designed to show off your feminine assets at their best and seize the attention of the people around you.” “Bonita Glamour Swimwear is not for the faint hearted, it will make you look like a beach goddess and you need to be prepared for the attention you will receive when you don any of the sensational swimwear pieces.”

Heading into the colder months of the year it is not unexpected to express a little nonchalance where swimwear is concerned. However, when we stumbled upon the vibrant Naomi Robinson between rows of colour splashed swimwear in a Cronulla Mall stall re-cently, we wanted nothing more than to get to know this local gal and her collection of many colours.

We love PRELOVED

The Clothing Tree Rooftop Market Organiser—Claire Mallett @ipinkidesign

It was an ever growing pile of clothes in the spare room, that started the idea of The Clothing Tree Rooftop Markets. “I was planning on selling the clothes on Ebay but after a

few failed attempts I quickly got over it”, Claire Mallet from ipinikidesigns declares. “On Sunday I had an idea to do a little market at my studio office in Cronulla, and thought that maybe other girls will want to sell their stuff too. Monday morning came and I rat-tled my idea off to friends and family, who thought it was great and by Monday night an additional wardrobe purge led to another huge pile of clothes, shoes, bags and accessories gathered. By Tuesday morning I had created The Clothing Tree logo and posted it on Facebook receiving instant feedback from girls wanting to take part. An event was created for the following Easter weekend and within 2 days I had 10 ladies on board to sell their ward-robes. Posters, flyers and signage were made so that people knew where, when, why and what this Rooftop Market was. On the day of the market my studio was wall to wall cloth-ing racks with fashion spilling onto the balcony, we were officially a preloved clothing market. With all available floor space occupied, our doors opened at 9am and the attending ladies made a beeline up the stairs to The Clothing Tree Market and into a forest of incredible fashion, shoes & ac-cessories. Due to the success of the market I have decided to make it

a monthly event with the addition of a kids/baby market every so often. Next on the agenda is a facebook page - of course – so we can keep our fans and followers informed of upcoming market days and events. So, everyone please like, like, like & share, share, share.” CLAIRE MALLETT

Next Market Date: @ Get Shot Media House The last Saturday of each month 9am – 3pm 97a Cronulla Street (upstairs Montien Thai Restaurant)

Shimmering Hemispheres

A lot of people I read for ask how I do it, exactly how do I hear dead people and how could I possibly know things that were only known to them and their Loved Ones?! Firstly and most importantly is meditation. Meditate, meditate, meditate!!! I can’t recommend it enough!

I’ll either hear them audibly, especially if there’s a desper-ate message to get across or I’ll hear them through my gut feelings and when the gut feeling is so strong I’ll burst if I don’t speak up and say something, then I know I’m getting correct information. I get chills down my legs as a confirmation and above all, even if the messages sound strange to me, I trust that it will be relatable for the person I’m reading for.

Trust is a massive part of my job. I have learnt to com-pletely trust whatever is coming through. I read for a beautiful artistic lady a couple of weeks ago and all I kept seeing around her were barrels of apples. I also felt she wanted to have another baby so I trusted all of what was shown to me and relayed it to her. She confirmed that she had just found out she was preg-nant and the barrels of apples? She again confirmed that

with her last pregnancy she craved apples so much that her family bought barrels of apples to satisfy the cravings! I will also see them standing next to you. Whether it is friends or relatives, they will flash in and either stay to chat or will quickly pop by to say hello and then leave again. Again it’s about trust. Quite some time ago, I read for a lady whose first husband showed up next to her to say >>

Page 42: I AM magazine ISSUE 10 2013

>> hello. I relayed this information and she stiffened, sit-ting straight up in her chair, “My husband is still alive.” I kept my cool because I knew what I was seeing was the truth. Classic situation to either trust or run! I decided to trust … I look back at the dead husband and he says to me “I’m her first husband, we were married for about a month back in the late 70s”.

I relay this to the woman and she confirms that yes, she was married in the late 70s for about 4 weeks but I couldn’t be right, he is in fact alive. I look back at her husband in Spirit and I shrug and apolo-gise for not being able to connect him to her and he shrugs, laughs a little, then leaves. I continued with the lady’s reading, knowing full well that it was her first husband I was seeing and speaking with and

that I would hear from her in the weeks ahead. I heard from her 3 days later. I answer the phone and I’m greeted with “You’re the real deal”. I laughed and thanked her. She had been researching her family tree in the library and she decided to search her first husband’s name. I was correct; he died in the early 1990s. He really was there to say hello!!!

She said that she sat there open mouthed in shock, so much so, the Librarian had to check she was okay.

Trust, trust, trust. I find that people can be so overwhelmed when they come to see me for the first time, that I usually get a call a couple of weeks later from them, wanting another Reading but this time they’ll come prepared with questions and photos.

Sometimes I have beautiful people in Spirit who will stay with me; they will literally stay on my left side until I’ve found their “owner”. This usually happens when I have many people who’ve made a monumental decision to take their own life or people who’ve had tragic accidents and are clearly nervous to make contact with their Loved Ones in case they will be judged in some way. >>>

42 / iammagazine.com.au

Page 43: I AM magazine ISSUE 10 2013

43 / iammagazine.com.au

>> In terms of predicting the future? I completely trust what I’m being told by Spirit and I simply relay it. I have had people in Readings say “oh no, I can’t believe my life is going to be that good!” only to have them call me a cou-ple of weeks or months later to state that what I’ve pre-dicted has come true. It’s without doubt, the best job I’ll ever have. I love helping people live their dreams, live their best life possible. I am proof of that. I’m so grateful that I trusted my gut and left the corporate world in September 2012 after 20 years.

I won’t look back, I will only look forward and I am tangible proof of living your best life possible. I am tangible proof that you can live your dreams and make a decent living from it. I’m now reading Australia-wide and Internationally. I’m passionate about this work and it’s my honour and pleasure to bring them into your world.

You are 3 months in, looking great, feeling better, and you succumb to an injury. It isn’t a big one – nothing that requires surgery (let’s leave those kind of injuries to the professional athletes), but it’s enough for your physio to tell you that you are out of action for a while. Or maybe you haven’t even been to the physio yet you are just battling through on your own. Here are the 3 most common injuries you may experience

when you first start training (usually they appear within 3-6 months). o Anterior knee pain (in and around the knee cap) o Lower back pain o Shoulder and or Neck Pain and stiffness The good news is they can be avoided. These chronic injuries are almost always a result of incorrect training techniques and or programming overload

and a lack of stretching. Lack of strength through the transverse abdominus – the ‘core’) is another common contributing factor. >>>

SO YOU’RE

INJURED. You’ve decided that 2013 will be your year! And so it should be. The year you eat healthily, and exercise like mad to create that body you’ve been wishing you had for the past few years.

>> Here are a few tips you can follow to manage injuries and avoid these injuries in the future … o If you are currently experiencing pain or discomfort STOP what you are doing and get yourself assessed and treated by a referred physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor. These guys all do different things so it really does depend on what you need as to where you go. We are blessed in the Shire to have a number of fabulous practitioners on our

doorstep. o Include at least one yoga and or Pilates session into your weekly schedule. Vital for flexibility, mobility, and abdominal strength. o If you have embarked on a running program may I suggest you run more often for shorter periods of time and at a higher intensity. You are better off running 5-6km 4 times a week than 15-20km once or twice a

week. o Stretch for a minimum of 10 minutes at the end of each training session. Focus on the glutes and hamstrings as well as shoulders and chest. o Invest in a foam roller – you can give yourself a massage daily this way! o Have your technique corrected – lunges and squats done incorrectly are the main culprits for knee pain. It’s

also worth knowing that being 2 degrees away from correct technique can result in a 40%+ reduction in the effectiveness of the exercise! o Get a regular massage – these are not a luxury they are an essential part of your training program. o Take up to 600g of magnesium daily – an essential mineral for effective muscle contraction and recovery from exercise.

And remember sometimes you have to take a couple of steps backwards before you can go forwards. Injuries are a pain – they really are. They can stop you in your tracks and undo all the hard work you have done up until now.

Lana Johnson, a Physiotherapist and Pilates Instructor with 20 years’ experience in the dance and movement world, is driven by the overwhelming desire to

help empower individuals to change their total health through efficient movement. She graduated from Sydney University with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and went on to gain her Diploma in Professional Pilates in Studio/Rehab with Polestar Pilates. Throughout her professional years she has come to discover that no matter how we might try, the biological, psychologi-cal and social elements of our health are inextricably linked. One cannot consider one element without taking into con-sideration the other. This stands true, despite the vision that the modern health sciences have taken, of understand-ing the parts but not looking at the whole. Lana believes that we all desire to achieve and maintain a state of ‘total health’ and to do this we must keep these three basic pillars, the Biological, the Psychological and the Social/Spiritual in balance, a task which is no easy feat in the 21st century. It is out of this passion and belief that BPS Tensegrity was created with the aim of providing its community with the knowledge of how a ‘healthy’ human body works, a skill set which individuals can use to transform their goals into reality, the maintenance of a burning desire to continue and better their health journey and the ability to effectively communicate their wishes and achievements to themselves, and the wider health community.

Why would you need to see BPS?

“If you feel like you’re not giving your health the attention it deserves, you struggle to decide on where to start or which health practitioner to see? If you are sick of being 'referred' on with a mismatch of advice and a lack of clear direction? Let our team of BPS health professionals take the puzzle out of 'total health'!” LANA JOHNSON

About BPS Tensegrity….

BPS Tensegrity is a holistic health centre located in Sydney. They provide many ‘evidence based’ health services such as Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Pilates, Massage, Exercise Physiol-ogy and Meditation; however, unlike other holistic health centres they are totally cohesive. No more confusing refer-rals, poor treatment outcomes or lost goals. BPS Tenseg-rity deals with total health in an integrated fashion, thereby taking the puzzle out of total health!

Behind the name...

The Biopsychosocial (BPS) model understands that bio-logical, psychological and social factors all play an important role in human functioning and that health is best described by looking at the interactions of these three factors rather

than each element separately.

Tensegrity is a building principle stating that structures maintain their shape by continuous support rather than con-tinuous compression (e.g. as in a stone arch). Such is true for most structures of the body and mind which do well with the strength created by the correct muscle tensioning or the support of integrated mindfulness but do not manage the compressive forces which are all too often as a result of and/or responsible for both physical and mental injury.

Ask yourself this question – How many times have you sat on the couch on a Saturday night wishing you were part of the David Attenbor-ough documentary on tv?

Even if your answer to the above question is ‘once’, it is time to do something about it. Whether you are single, engaged, married or ‘its complicated’ – go solo, or as I like to say Soulo, because travelling on your own soothes the soul.

What would I do with all that time on my own you ask? Anything you want!!! It is that simple. Pack your bags and get to the airport. Hop on a plane to the destination

of your dreams and have the adventure you have always dreamed of.

The first time I travelled on my own was quite daunting, but I was excited with the knowledge that I was com-pletely free (apart from having to check in with Daddy at 30 years of age). Free to explore the streets with my cam-era, to sit in a coffee shop and people watch without any-one nagging me that they were bored, free to shop all day

long (what girl doesn’t love that idea) and last, but cer-tainly not least, free to do some other things that I cannot really mention in this magazine.

Travelling alone doesn’t always mean you have to be alone. If you feel like company there are a few easy ways to meet people. Join a day tour, take a cultural tour of the city, attend a cooking class or simply sit in a café with >>>

Soulo Adventures

>>> a smile on your face, a guaranteed way of striking up a conversation, if only because people want to find out what is behind that smile….and if you are sitting in a

café in France there could only be one reason right!!!

Still hesitant? Start with a place close to home. A week-end in Melbourne, a week in the Margaret River. Get the feel for it. If you like it keep on going. Book that overseas trip, jump onboard a cruise, catch a train up to Chiang Mai to meditate with monks or follow in Atten-borough’s footsteps and visit the Masai in Kenya. Don’t let the fear of being alone stop you. Conquer your fears

and before you know it you will find yourself in the north-ern most part of Thailand eating dinner with the Hmong Hill Tribe. For more tips and advice on travelling Soulo:

DESIGN

AFTER

FIVE

FASHION

FROM

THE

DARNELL

COLLECTION

#photos provided by Melita Amaral.

60 / iammagazine.com.au

Considered the largest private collection of fashion in Australia,

the After 5 Darnell collection is now exhibiting in Gallery 2 of

Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery until the 12th of May, 2013.

Described as “A celebration of the artistry of designers and a

window to the social history of the Twentieth Century” by Hazelhurst Curator’s , we

discovered it was a reflection of a time when material quality

reigned and design for the everyday woman was embraced

and executed with nothing but

perfection. The collection is a tribute to the days when Haute

Couture was at the peak of elegance and reflected the

essence of the female form.
