Fully-Enclosed Raw Materials Storage and Blending System

Hyundai Steel developed the world’s very first fully-enclosed raw materials storage and blend-ing system to minimize environmental pollution.

Fully-Enclosed Unloading Mechanism Our continuous ship unloader is an eco-friendly raw materials

processing facility that works much more efficiently than other

systems currently in use. It prevents dust and fine particulates

from escaping into the environment by transporting raw materials

directly into transport vessels.

Fully-Enclosed Belt Conveyor The closed-type belt conveyor transfers raw materials that have

been unloaded by the fully-enclosed storage and blending system

to the storage area, minimizing the possibility of releasing pollut-

ants into the environment. After that, it goes on to sintering, coking,

firing, and blast furnace processing.

Fully-Enclosed Raw Materials StorageRaw materials that have been unloaded and placed on the conveyor

are then transferred to either dome-type or linear-type raw materi-

als storage buildings, eliminating the need for moisture controls or a

separate wastewater facility, as well as any possibility of environmen-

tal pollution and damage during inclement weather conditions. This

results in much lower operating costs than conventional open stor-

age areas, which require the use of wastewater treatment facilities.

· Status of scrap steel resource recycling

Development of Resources Recycling SystemHyundai Steel is the first steel company in the world to develop

a resources recycling business system that stretches all the

way from iron ore to finished vehicles, to scrap steel and all the

way around again. This system has allowed the company, which

is the largest steel resources recycler in Korea, to enhance its

global competitiveness through the continuous operation of its

blast furnaces.

Crude and hot-rolled steel that has been produced at Hyundai Steel

then progresses to cold-rolled steel production at Hyundai Hysco

and vehicle manufacturing at Hyundai Motor and KIA Motors. The

final step comes when the cars are turned into scrap for recycling

at the Automotive Recycling Center. The scrap steel is then

converted into reinforcing bar and H section for use in construction

and building projects being undertaken by Hyundai Engineering &

Construction and Hyundai Amco. Their waste construction materials

are in turn recycled as scrap steel, completing the cycle once again.

Electric arc furnace process

Sections, reinforcing bar, and rail are produced through an electric arc furnace process using scrap steel as their raw material. They are mainly used in the con-struction of buildings, bridges, towers, and rails.

1 Ironmaking Process

After sintered ore and coke have been

produced, the blast furnace turns them

into molten iron. Our fully-enclosed stor-

age facilities minimize environmental

pollution and add to our cost competi-

tiveness by preventing the loss of raw

materials due to inclement weathers.

1 Steelmaking process

Steel is produced by using scrap steel

or reduced iron in an electric arc

furnace. Its advantages include few

restrictions on which materials can be

used, and easily controlled tempera-

tures within the furnace.

2 Steelmaking Process

Usable steel is created by removing

impurities from the molten steel and

adding alloys to it. The end products

are called “semi-finished.”

2 Section rolling

Various shapes of sections, including H

section and sheet pile, are created ac-

cording to the type of rolls.

3 Rolling Process ❶Steel plate rolling process

Produces steel plate of various thick-

nesses and lengths by flat-rolling semi-

finished goods, such as slabs.

❷Hot-rolled coil rolling process

Automotive Steel Sheet

Steel sheets that are used for car frames and exteriors must be high

in strength and resistant to fatigue, since they are directly linked

to a car’s life span and safety. In addition, they must be lightweight

and easily malleable, so that they can be turned into a wide range

of shapes. In order to satisfy these various requirements, Hyundai

Steel produces specialized hot-rolled steel sheets, improving their

development and speed of production by conducting research

projects with Hyundai Motor, KIA Motors, and Hyundai Hysco.

Earthquake-Resistant Steel

The increasing frequency of earthquakes around the world has

sparked interest in the development of earthquake-resistant steel.

In order to accommodate this growing market, Hyundai Steel is

accelerating the development of a broad range of such products.

We have already succeeded in developing hot-rolled H section and

ultra-strong reinforcing bar with greater earthquake resistance, and

are enhancing the their reliability by introducing a quality guaran-

tee system.

Steel Plate for Ships

Hyundai Steel’s R&D center succeeded in developing high-quality

steel plate for ships and other global demands. We undertook inten-

sive research to develop high-quality, easily malleable products that

could meet the need for high-intensity, low-temperature weldability

and high-heat input welding. The world’s top ten shipping classifica-

tion organizations have certified our steel plate for use in ship con-

struction.

Sheet Pile

Sheet pile is used to support vertical loads

created by upper-level pressures. Before

they were developed, log piles were buried

underground to prevent landslides. How-

ever, they could only be used for simple

structures, as they had no durability. Sheet

pile was developed to solve this problem.

Sheet pile is widely used for permanent

liner structures, and temporary earth-

retaining structures.

H Section

H section supports many types of struc-

tures, such as multi-storey buildings, mills,

warehouses, airport hangars, and sports

complexes, as well as apartments, schools,

shopping centers, and houses. They are re-

nowned for their excellent shock absorben-

cy and high degree of weldability. Demand

for them has been on the rise lately, due

to the expansion of retaining structures

in the civil works sector and the need for

earthquake-proof buildings in areas where

earthquakes occur frequently.

HSS (High Speed Steel) Roll

Boasting a high degree of resistance to

abrasion compared with conventional cast-

ing, Hyundai Steel’s HSS roll is widely used

for making reinforcing bar, small beams,

and ship parts. The company developed

its first-generation HSS roll in 1993, and

is currently producing fourth-generation

products featuring enhanced abrasion and

thermal resistance. Fifth-generation HSS

roll and carbide steel plate roll are cur-

rently under development. The improved

durability of HSS roll adds to the life spans

of products and aids in the precise manu-

facture of their sizes.

Steel Casting Products for Ship Parts

Some of the major steel casting products

used in ships include rudder horns (used to

support rudders) and stern bosses for hold-

ing propellers. Since these products must be

resistant to both corrosion and vibrations,

quality management and special technolo-

gies are integral to their successful produc-

tion. Demand for their use is increasing dra-

matically, especially for large container ships.

Hyundai Steel currently boasts 40% of steel

casting products for ship parts in the global

market.

Track Shoe Assembly

Because track shoe assembly constitute

the substructure of excavators, they are

every bit as important as their engines.

They distribute the weight of the machine

efficiently, and their three-layered wheels

play an integral role in maintaining their

grip in wetlands, sand, and gravel. Hyundai

Steel has been supplying them to major

construction and machinery companies in

Korea and Japan since 1985. We currently

boast 22%, 75% and 10% of the global, do-

mestic and Japanese markets, respectively.

Inverted Angle

Inverted angle was developed to reduce the

effect of shocks during collisions between

ships and to minimize vessel weights as

they became larger and larger. In 1982, Hy-

undai Steel became only the second player

in the world to produce inverted angle. In

addition, we are spurring the development

of high-strength steel products for high-

value-added ships. We also plan to add

to our presence in Japan and China, the

world’s two largest consumers of inverted

angle, along with Hyundai Heavy Industries

and other domestic shipyards.

World-Class Products

Six products made by Hyundai Steel have been named World-Class Products of Korea by the Ministry of Knowledge Econ-omy, winning recognition for their outstanding quality. They satisfy two main criteria: ranking among the top five in the global market and having a minimum of a10% share of it, and having an annual export value of at least USD 50 million.

Hot-Rolled Coil

This refers to steel sheets that have

been thinned by heating, pressing, and

extending semi-finished steel slabs made

by processing molten steel. Hyundai Steel

is a major supplier of flat steel in Korea.

The Dangjin Integrated Steelwork’s fully-

automated facilities produce hot-rolled

products that are used for a variety pur-

poses, including automotive and machine

frames, home appliances, construction ma-

terials, high-pressure gas containers, and

line pipes.

Angle/Channel

Hyundai Steel manufactures various types

and sizes of shipbuilding angle/channel and

steel frames. They include angles, channels,

CT sections, and I beams. Hyundai Steel is

the only company in Korea that can supply

large-sized angles, which require high-tech

design and rolling technologies. Angle/

channel, which we developed for the first

time in Korea, are high-value-added prod-

ucts that also require a high level of technol-

ogy and quality management.

Steel Plate

With the completion of its integrated steel-

works, Hyundai Steel boasts a complete

heavy plate production system that ranges

from raw materials to final products. Our

manufacturing methods have won approval

from shipping classification societies in a

host of countries. In addition to producing

general and high-tensile steels, we manu-

facture steel plate for boilers, pressurized

containers, general and welded structures,

bridges, industrial machines, and pipelines.

Stainless Steel

Our world-renowned, next-generation stain-

less steel products are fully recyclable,

pollution-free, and safe for consumer use.

We also manufacture high-quality products

to meet the needs of customers in the low-

nickel stainless steel market. Stainless steel

is widely used for white goods, transporta-

tion facilities and steel pipes.

Reinforcing Bar

Reinforcing bar is widely used in reinforced

concrete structures, nuclear power plants,

and in normal construction. We produce

them in dimensions ranging between

D10mm and D57mm at our Incheon Works,

Pohang Works, and Dangjin Integrated

Steelworks. As part of our commitment to

developing customized products that can

result in cost reductions for our construc-

tion company customers, we developed a

“super bar” with 25% higher yield strength.

It increases the amount of available space

in buildings, facilitates the construction

of skyscrapers, and reduces construction

costs significantly.

Rail

Hyundai Steel has been playing a pivotal

role in the construction of Korea’s infra-

structures network for the past thirty-plus

years by supplying it with rails and light

rails. In 1998, we developed a UIC 60 rail

for high-speed railroads. They require much

higher-strength rails than existing ones, as

well as very strict tolerances in terms of

their measurements. In 2008, we became

only the second player in the world to be-

gin our own production of rail for Maglev

trains, displaying Korean steel technologies

to the world once again.

Trust-BasedManagement

Hyundai Steel’s vision for sustainable management is to win the trust of all its stakeholders (including its employees) through harmonious growth based on transparent management that focuses on ethical behavior and mutually benefi-cial growth.

Shared Growth

Mutually beneficial growth is an integral element of Hyundai Steel’s goal of evolving into a truly global steel enterprise. This

includes sharing our corporate vision with our business partners and offering them practical support. One of our most repre-

sentative programs in this regard is the Green Facility Bridge Loans program. These loans provide our business partners with

low-interest funding to assist in their development of eco-friendly facilities and products. Other activities that we undertake to

enhance the competitiveness of our business partners include regular meetings and technical exchanges, and operating inte-

grated purchasing and scrap steel procurement systems.

Ethical Management

Hyundai Steel is committed to ethical management. In order to ensure that all of our operations are carried out transparently,

we have been offering our employees training in ethical thinking and behavior since 2000. We have also developed a Code of

Ethics. In 2008, we published an ethical management guidebook to strengthen our commitment to ethical management.

Fair Trade

Hyundai Steel introduced a compliance program in 2002. Since then, we have strengthened our fair trade practices by establishing

detailed and appropriate programs and systems and carrying out employee training. As a result, we obtained an “A” rating in the

compliance program rating assessment that was carried out by the Korean Fair Trade Commission in 2008 and 2010.

and Dangjin. This includes raising energy efficiency, emergency

house repairs, and renovations.

Children’s Environmental Class: Nurturing “Green Guardians” Under the slogan “Children and the Environment Are Our Fu-

ture,” Hyundai Steel has been operating children’s environmen-

tal classes since 2007. These hands-on events are offered to a

thousand elementary school students every year, helping them

understand what climate change and global warming are and

encouraging them to save energy in their daily lives.

"Happy Yes" College Student Volunteer Group In order to stress the need for volunteer activities at the local

level, Hyundai Steel recruits one hundred college students and

organizes a college-student volunteer group called "Happy Yes"

every year. They carry out a broad range of volunteer activities

targeting their local communities. They include housing repairs,

visiting cultural heritage sites with local children, and assisting

fruit farmers.

Matching Grants Hyundai Steel has been operating a matching grant program

through which it provides donations in proportion to the amount

raised by its employees since 2005. The funds are used for pub-

lic services and social service facilities in the communities in

which we operate. From 2011 to 2021, Hyundai Steel will direct

the grants exclusively toward housing repairs.
