- Logical extension to Hypertext- Computer-based information retrieval system that enables user to gain or provide

access to text, audio, and video recordings, photographs, computer graphics, related to a particular subject

- Allows the user to gather information in a non-linear way. This means that the user has a choice as to what path he or she takes in order to gain information. The user has the option of skipping certain items or can go through every piece of information that is listed

- Hypermedia uses those media in which they are linked together in such a way that user can move from one element to another and back again.

- Hypermedia programs are designed for constructivist learning environment.

- A database of information- Multiple media ( text , audio , graphics , video , image , animation etc )- Multiple methods of moving from one element to another ( e.g. Hyperlinks, menus,

buttons, maps, word search, commands, indexes, e.t.c. )- Interactive forms

• Hypermedia systems are used in educational environment. The active participation of students is one of the major advantages of hypermedia systems.

• Hypermedia enables students to explore and construct their own learning. • This method of learning breaks down the barriers of time and place, allowing

maximum flexibility for the learner. Students are provided a means to learn individually and at their own speed. Students can repeat difficult concepts, or skip already mastered skill areas.

Also it is used for effective education. Hypermedia can help students achieve a wide variety of goals in education for example:

• Develop higher-order thinking skills • Develop group and interpersonal skills • Learn content in a given discipline • Develop technical skills

The World Wide Web (WWW) is the best example of hypermedia applications.

Through WWW it is possible to deliver hypertext, graphics, animation and sound

between different computer environments .

Other forms of hypermedia applications include CD-ROM encyclopedias and games.

To view hypermedia documents, a user’s computer must have hardware and software that support multimedia.

These systems usually consists of sound and video cards, speakers, and a graphical operating system such as

Windows OS or the MacOS etc. To view hypermedia documents on the Internet, a program called a browser is necessary. Browsers provide varying levels of support

for the graphics, sound and video available on the Internet.
