H2iCED® Conversions for HGV & Large Vans
By Amanda Lyne, November 2017
The Commercial vehicle owner’s dilemma
What if the current pressure
to address air quality means
that my diesel vehicles get
banned or at least I have to
pay “fines” to use them in the
city ?
Our customers are asking us to
offer solutions that reduce carbon
emissions, such that I fear we
will lose business if you don't
stay ahead
The finance director is badgering
me about diesel costs already, so
I need to find something that
makes financial sense
I need to advise the business
on the fleet replacements
now, and ensure that
whatever I suggest will be
viable for the next 10 years
of it’s life
Why we need options NOW
• Air quality zones will be place by 2019 (that’s <2 years!)
• High levels of political pressure on CO2 reduction • Evident lack of delivery in transport sector, particularly freight and
commercial vehicles
• Action needed now to enable delivery of 2030 targets (allowing for fleet renewal process)
• Help deliver competitiveness globally (Industrial strategy and clean growth)
HGV options today
100% Biogas Uses gas grid supply & Saves CO2
based on certified supply
100% CNG Some OEM vehicles are available Doesn’t save CO2 emissions;
Electrification Some SME hybrid or bespoke conversions
EURO VI Meets current AQ but doesn’t address CO2 reduction
The benefit of hydrogen dual-fuel
The best way to reduce carbon emissions
Available now, using known technology
Mitigation for the future
Best value for money in terms of emission saving
Delivers results for urban driving without compromise for other circumstances
H2ICED® - A practical approach for hydrogen in commercial vehicles
• Ultra- low emissions (C02 & Air Quality) • Displace diesel with H2 (very low carbon fuel)
• Manage the bi-products of combustion in air using emission control systems/approaches available on existing vehicles
• Efficient energy use: • H2 combustion in compression (diesel)
engines ( approx. 40% thermal efficiency)
• Dual Fuel allows for operating on diesel when hydrogen is not available
Refuse Trucks
DAF - Grundon
Mercedes-Benz Econic
EURO 6 Vans
The conversion process
• Determine options for amount of hydrogen on board storage • Assess duty cycle; identify key emission
reduction requirement; determine weight and space limitations
• Estimate on board hydrogen storage capacity • Determine budget versus results requirement
• Design specific, safely engineered solution • One off design for vehicle type • One off engine calibration exercise
• Install “optimised for use” hydrogen system • Full ECU controlled system or supervisory
approach
• Supply VSO registered vehicle for use
• Provide Training, support and safety assessment
Making the business case for Hydrogen
• Customer’s that place a value CO2 emission reduction • Commercial relationship value
• Incentives for low carbon technologies
• Small scale back to base operations (20 HGV at base) • H2ICED® can be competitive to gas dual fuel
• Localised supply of hydrogen as part of a whole energy solution (with other operators; integrated into renewable energy storage)
• Whole fleet operations in Urban areas • Hydrogen sources that can compete against diesel
• Bi-product sources
• Grid & power services for energy storage & renewables
• Pipeline supplies
The Immediate Opportunities for Urban HGV
• Short Term: • One off proto-type conversion;
• Focussed on localised existing H2 infrastructure
• Medium Term • Consider Back to base H2 infrastructure
• Extend demonstration to 20-30 vehicles
• On going development & demonstration
• Long Term • Whole system ultra low emission mileage from
integrated energy system

“Best of both” EV plugin charging provides low cost
zero emissions operation
Hydrogen provides range and flexibility
Up to 250 mile range – 100 miles EV
only
Balance charging vs hydrogen refuelling
Fits in normal urban operations
Operating modes Daily operation > 100miles
Multiple shifts –1 vehicle replaces
2-3 EVs
Flexibility – short routes some days, long
routes on others
Charging from fuel cell where plugin not
available – at home or on the road
Right vehicle for the job
Kangoo ZE-H2 van good market entry but has limits
Payload is critical – mass and volume
Business case for early adopters - contract value or
sustainability benefits not vehicle price
