From the Editor: Why are there now all the short goo.gl website names in the newsletters?

For months there has been an ongoing discussion regarding this newsletter and how it should be provided to the membership. So from my recent response to the Facebook dialogue: There are two issues here... one, in what format/media the newsletter is provided (each with it's advantages and disadvantages), and; two, who pays for the more expensive media. We provide almost any media desired except stone tablets (the postage would be a killer.) For those that prefer paper by snail mail, that option

is available;

For those who desire the speed and convenience of soft copy, that is available on the website; For those who text and Tweet, a linkable short URL is available (it’s goo.gl/Op3yT for the HVSC website); and For those with Smartphones, a QR code is available to be scanned (see the back cover of this newsletter). And if anyone asks for other formats or media, I will do my best to provide it. (With the exception of the "paper by snail mail" method, this is all done with no additional cost to the club.) [email protected]

Just a brief reminder to use your new password when accessing the “Members Only” area of the website. You will find the new password on the back of your 2012-2013 membership card. [email protected]

2012-2013 Membership Directories are available. You can pick up a copy at any HVSC meeting or I can mail one to you if you send me a self addressed stamped 6"x9" (minimum) envelope. For a couples membership (2 directories), the postage is $1.30. For a single membership (1 directory), the postage is $1.10. Pete Gray

Your Marketing Committee is looking for a club member to act as our liaison to the local media. The responsibilities would be to place announcements and press releases in local newspapers and radio stations. The majority of

work can be done from your home in about and hour a week. The Committee will help set up a program that you could follow. Please contact me at [email protected] Thank you in advance. Craig Goldstein

SkiDUCK...

Our club has collected a substantial amount of ski apparel and equipment this summer and presented to Cheryl Corbett at the September 5 meeting. We will continue having the “Blue Barrel” at our meetings for you to add your no longer needed gloves, mitts, jackets, suits, pants, socks, thermal layers, hats, neck warmers, helmets, boots, poles etc. Periodically we will box up the goods and send them on to SkiDuck. SkiDUCK (SKIing and snowboarding for Disabled and Underprivileged Children and older Kids) is a new, grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of disabled and underprivileged children by sharing the joys of skiing and snowboarding. SkiDUCK is committed to partnering with local organizations with similar goals of serving disabled and underprivileged children. And in areas where these needs aren't yet being served, we seek to establish a sustainable model of service with local resources and volunteers. If your community or organization is interested in partnering with SkiDUCK to establish or enhance a program to help children onto the slopes, give us a QUACK! * For even more information on Ski Duck, visit the May or June HVSC newsletter (on the www.HudsonValleySkiClub.org website, and click Newsletters.)

Valentines Day is coming…. Remember your wives and sweet-hearts. Take a look at the HVSC Wedding List and notice how many couples met and married thanks to HVSC. This will be a first time visit to the Swiss Inn. A number of our mem- bers have recommended the Swiss Inn for our weekend trip to Ver- mont. The Inn offers modest accommodations and 5 star meals! The Inn also has a bar on premise and 3 fireside sitting rooms for gathering. Two day tickets to Stratton will be available. Other mountains within easy reach are Okemo, Bromley, and Magic. www.stratton.com, www.okemo.com, www.bromley.com, www.magicmtn.com For Nordic enthusiasts Viking Nordic Center is in Londonderry www.vikingnordic.com

Pay in full or make two payments of $98. Please let me know if you would be interested in a horse drawn sleigh ride at Pfister Farm which is just over a mile from the Swiss Inn. Price is $20 pp. If there are 12 it will be $180 for the sleigh. I was thinking Saturday night after dinner would be a good time.

How to Improve Your Skiing or Riding There are a few techniques that are proven to enhance one’s skiing or riding abilities that many of us have most likely employed at one time or another during our skiing/riding careers. There’s the tried and true method of practice. Simply doing it over and over and over again until, hopefully, it be-comes second nature. For example, you probably tie your shoes without look-ing at them simply because you’ve done it so many times that your fingers have such a high degree of muscle memory. Hopefully, all of that practice allows you to get it right and your skill level improves. If not, then frustration sets in and ultimately one gives up. Not for lack of trying mind you but, simply because it doesn’t work or it’s not enjoyable. Something is missing. What is a person to do? As far as snow sports are concerned, (you’re on your own with regard to tying your shoes) this is where your ski club gets involved. The HVSC can address, in a positive manner, the frustration you feel, the plateau that you seem to have reached and your perceived inability to make the leap from that plateau to a higher level of skiing and riding. Forget that “woe is me” attitude or the belief that you’ll always be an intermediate – do something positive. HVSC has the means to address the dilemma you may be experiencing. The Ski Improvement Days that will be offered in conjunction with discount lift tickets at several local ski areas and the instruction on some club trips are the first steps to take to enhance your skiing or riding. These days allow members and their guests to take advantage of less expensive skiing and riding opportunities and free lessons from Certified and qualified instructors. Lessons will be available for everyone from first-timers to the upper intermedi-ate who is having difficulty making the transition to being a truly expert skier. Come join us for one of the upcoming Ski Improvement Days and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much better your skiing and riding will become. You may learn about the highly secretive French technique for ski improvement. Be sure to see the coming newsletter for more information about the ski improve-ment days and a schedule for the discount lift ticket opportunities. If you plan to participate in one of the Ski Improvement Days, please contact the club’s Instruction Coordinator, Mark Searle at (845)471-6402 or [email protected] to ensure that there will be appropriate instructors available for the given event.

ADULT SKI & SNOWBOARD RACE LEAGUE

CATAMOUNT, Hillsdale, NY

www.catamountski.com (518) 325-3200

I’m pleased to announce that the ADULT SKI & SNOWBOARD RACE LEAGE is back for another season and everyone is invited to participate. The same format as last year is being offered and it is expected to be a huge success. We are participating in Team Ski / Board Racing on Wednesday Nights. We need at least FIVE racers to participate as a TEAM. The cost is $95.00 per person. This will include your lift ticket, race fee, awards and banquet at the end of the season (a portion of the cost will be paid by the club). Registration will be at 6:30 pm and racing should begin about 7:00 pm. This is a GS course and includes two timed runs. Last year over 50 skiers participated on some nights. It seems that we have the same members participating each year. I would like to see some new faces; especially some of the newer members. If anyone would like to provide some training or instruction or share/offer some of their racing expertise please join us. We usually car pool from the Red Oaks Mill area on race nights The Season Finale will be the annual President’s Race March 23 presented by the New Jersey Ski Council (NJSC) at Hunter Mountain. Anyone who has ever participated in this event can attest to its success. This race is open to all HVSC members (children are also allowed to participate). Further details about this event will appear in upcoming newsletters and announced at future meetings. These are all ON-SNOW events (unlike Friday Night Race Training) and open to all levels of skiers and boarders, men and women, from beginners to experts. All HVSC members are invited and encouraged to participate. It is a great opportunity to meet and ski with some of your fellow club members while improving your skiing skills and technique. This weekly event is meant to be FUN, so come on out and enjoy the thrills and spills that racing has to

offer.
