Hunting Retriever Club (HRC)
The Preamble of the HRC…the betterment of Hunting Retrievers as a whole and to influence the breeding and training of a better and finer Hunting Retriever;
to provide hunters and Hunting Retrievers a series of actual Hunting tests in a controlled system and furnish an ongoing educational program for the Hunters, for their training, experience, and sporting competition.
Further, it is the purpose of this Association to support and protect the inherent rights of its members to own, hunt, bear arms, to promote the breed and type of dog of their choice and promote complimentary conservation and management of game birds and wildlife species commonly pursued by the members of the HRC.”
UKC / HRC Titles
The UKC offers 5 coveted titles to the HRC program:
Started Hunting Retriever (SHR)
Hunting Retriever (HR)
Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH)
Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH)
Upland Hunter (UH)
Started Hunting Retriever (SHR)Started level - Judges look for natural ability rather than trained performance.
The dog must perform: • 2 single marks on land• 2 single marks on water
Usually, the distances are almost always under 75 yards over fairly light terrain.
4 test worth 5 points each must be passed for the SHR title.
Hunting Retriever (HR)Seasoned - The judges look for steadiness on line, delivery to hand, style, natural ability and a reasonable degree of control.
Consists of five tests:• doubled-marked water retrieve• double-marked land retrieve• a diversion• a walk-up• a blind land retrieve• a blind water retrieve• tracking or quartering test (optional)
Distances rarely exceed 100 yards on land, 75 yards on water, and 60 yards on blinds over moderately tough terrain. At least 3 test, worth 10 points each and a total of 40 points, must be obtained for the HR title.
Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH)Finished - Judges look for style and accuracy coupled with natural ability and a trained performance. The retriever must respond promptly to voice or whistle commands and remain steady and under control at all times. They should be “a pleasure to hunt with under any conditions.” The distances range between 50 and 150 yards over tough terrain.
At least 4 test, 15 points each, and a total of 100 points, must be obtained for the HRCH title.
Consists of up to eight tests:
• multiple-marked water retrieve• multiple-marked land retrieve• a diversion• a walk-up• tracking or quartering test (optional)• a blind land retrieve• a blind water retrieve• honoring another retriever
Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH)
Same type test as a Finished, but over even harder conditions and usually done in multiple steps over several (5) days. The first four are devoted to water and land test. The fifth day is an Upland hunt. The judging is tougher than at any other level. The Grand is open to all HRC Champions.
Grand tests are worth 40 points each, 300 total points and 2 Grand passes are required for the GRHRCH title.
Upland Hunter (UH)
The Upland tests consist of a simulated walk-up with a subsequent quartering
or tracking test. The Upland dog is required to honor another dog, be
steady to wing and shot and will be presented with a minimum of two birds
to flush in the quartering test. Successful completion of each test
earns the dog ten points. Upon attainment of 40 points an Upland
Hunter (UH) title is awarded.
