Copyright © 2008 Peel, Inc. Hunter's Glen Newsletter - March 2008 Happy St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th. St. Patrick was a patron saint of Ireland. It was long believed that St. Patrick once stood on a hilltop, and with only a wooden staff, banished all the snakes out of Ireland. The truth is, Ireland was never home to any snakes, but it is a good story. Leprechauns and shamrocks remind us of St. Patrick’s Day. Leprechauns are guardians of ancient treasure they bury in crocks or pots. They tend to avoid contact with humans who they regard as foolish and greedy creatures. If caught by a mortal human, the leprechaun will promise great wealth if allowed to go free. He carries two leather pouches. In one is a magical silver coin that returns to his pouch each time it is paid out. In his other pouch is a gold coin he uses to bribe his way out of difficult situations. This coin turns to leaves or ashes once the leprechaun has parted with it. The next time you see a leprechaun, don’t take your eyes off him, because he will quickly disappear without paying his dues. No wonder leprechauns think we humans are foolish and greedy! The shamrock was a sacred plant in ancient Ireland, because it symbolized the rebirth of spring. Today it is a symbol of good luck and pride in our Irish heritage. Many Americans have Irish ancestors, and the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day has continued since the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in New York City on March 17, 1762. Irish patriotism among Americans has flourished for centuries. So whether you are celebrating this tradition with parades featuring bagpipes, parties, leprechauns, shamrocks or the wearing of the green, be proud of your heritage and have a great St. Patrick’s Day. CELEBRATING EASTER Easter is celebrated as the religious holiday honoring the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter is observed in the United States on the first Sunday following the full moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox on March 21. So Easter has become a movable holiday which can occur between March 22-April 25. This year we celebrate Easter on Sunday, March 23, 2008. Many traditions have become a part of the holiday and are celebrated by Christians and non-Christians. The Easter hare was introduced to America by German settlers during the 1700s. The first edible bunnies were not made of chocolate. They were made of pastry and sugar, and the egg was a symbol of rebirth. By the 19th century in America, the Easter hare had become the Easter Bunny surprising good children on Easter morning with baskets of colored eggs, chocolates and jelly beans. Different cultures have developed their own traditions for celebrating Easter. Whatever your tradition may be, have a happy Easter. Paper Plate Bunny This is a good Easter craft for young children, and they can easily glue the pieces together. You will need: A large paper plate A small paper plate Glue Pink construction paper Cotton ball Crayons or markers Glue the small plate on top of the large one to form the head and body of the bunny. Cut out bunny ears from the pink construction paper and glue to the head. Draw eyes and a nose on the face of the plate with crayons or markers. Glue a cotton ball on the back for tail. Easter Bunny Tag The child who is the Easter Bunny is “it”. All the other children are little bunnies. It’s a tag game, but everyone has to hop in a crouching position. The child who gets tagged is then “it” and the new Easter Bunny! To make the game more entertaining, you can make or buy bunny ears for the person who is “it” to wear. If you decide to provide bunny ears for all the children to wear, just make the Easter Bunny’s ears larger or a different color to distinguish him from the other little bunnies! Bunny Hop Each player must cover a certain distance while hopping with a plastic egg between his knees. Easter Fun & Games Don’t want to wait for the mail?
