Happy St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th. St.Patrickwas apatron saint of Ireland. Itwas long believed that St. Patrick oncestoodonahilltop,andwithonlyawoodenstaff,banishedallthesnakesoutofIreland.Thetruthis,Irelandwasneverhometoanysnakes,butitisagoodstory. Leprechauns and shamrocks remindusofSt.Patrick’sDay.Leprechaunsareguardiansofancienttreasuretheyburyincrocksorpots.Theytendtoavoidcontactwith humans who they regard as foolishandgreedycreatures.Ifcaughtbyamortalhuman,theleprechaunwillpromisegreatwealth if allowed togo free. Hecarriestwoleatherpouches.Inoneisamagicalsilvercointhatreturnstohispoucheachtimeit ispaidout. Inhisotherpouchisagoldcoinheuses tobribehiswayoutof difficult situations. This coin turns to leaves or ashes once the leprechaun hasparted with it. The next time you see aleprechaun,don’ttakeyoureyesoffhim,becausehewillquicklydisappearwithoutpayinghisdues.Nowonderleprechaunsthinkwehumansarefoolishandgreedy! The shamrock was a sacred plant inancientIreland,becauseitsymbolizedtherebirthofspring.TodayitisasymbolofgoodluckandprideinourIrishheritage. ManyAmericans have Irish ancestors,and the celebration of St. Patrick’s Dayhas continued since the first St. Patrick’s DayParadewasheldinNewYorkCityonMarch17,1762. IrishpatriotismamongAmericans has flourished for centuries. So whetheryouarecelebratingthistraditionwith parades featuring bagpipes, parties,leprechauns,shamrocksorthewearingofthegreen,beproudofyourheritageandhaveagreatSt.Patrick’sDay.
Celebrating eaSter EasteriscelebratedasthereligiousholidayhonoringtheresurrectionofJesusChrist.Easter is observed in the United States on the first Sunday following the full moon that occursonorafterthespringequinoxonMarch21.SoEasterhasbecomeamovableholidaywhichcanoccurbetweenMarch22-April25.ThisyearwecelebrateEasteronSunday,March23,2008. ManytraditionshavebecomeapartoftheholidayandarecelebratedbyChristiansandnon-Christians.TheEasterharewasintroducedtoAmericabyGermansettlersduringthe 1700s. The first edible bunnies were not made of chocolate. They were made of pastryandsugar,andtheeggwasasymbolofrebirth.Bythe19thcenturyinAmerica,theEasterharehadbecometheEasterBunnysurprisinggoodchildrenonEastermorningwithbasketsofcoloredeggs,chocolatesandjellybeans. DifferentcultureshavedevelopedtheirowntraditionsforcelebratingEaster.Whateveryourtraditionmaybe,haveahappyEaster.
