    INSERT A PICTURE

    HERE

    Let the fighting of

    HIV/AIDS be a global

Our Most Tremendous Areas of work.

    HIV AND AIDS

    UNAIDS estimates that there

    were a total of 33.2 (30.6

    36.1) million people living

    with HIV, 2.5 (1.8 4.1)

    million new infections and

    2.1 (1.92.4) million deaths

    due to HIV by December

    2007 (UNAIDS 2008). The

    number of new infections

    continues to outstrip the

number of deaths due to HIV

    infection an indication that

    prevention efforts are failing

to keep pace with the epi-

    demic.

    Uganda first reported HIV

    infection and the AIDS cases

in 1982 on the shores of

    Lake Victoria, Rakai District.

    HIV infection spread rapidly

    throughout the country re-

    sulting into a severe though

    18% among the general

    population and as high as

    30% among pregnant moth-

    ers. Uganda became the first

    country to significantly re-

    duce her HIV prevalence to

    6% by 2002. This show-

    cased Uganda as a global

    champion in the response

    spouse indicating that the

    infection is not acquired

from the spouse but an extra

    marital sexual partner.

    ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE

    CHILDREN

    The Uganda government

defines an orphan as a person

under the age of 18 years and

has lost one or both parents.

    The dominant age group as

    per Ugandas population is

below 18 years and only 3.5

% are aged 65 years or more.

    This implies a high depend-

ence ratio. A fifth of the

    population is under five

years of age while a quarter

    is between 6-12 years. The

    mid 2007 population esti-

    mate stood at 28.2 million;

    (2002 Census) of which 87%

live in rural areas and 73%

    are engaged in agriculture. is

    attributed to a high fertility

    rate.

Humanitarian care Uganda is a Ugandan based non-profit, Indige-

    nous, interdenominational non governmental organization

registered with the NGO Board. It was established in 2008.
