Building 3: My initial reaction upon looking at the three buildings was that I recognized and understood well, the wood frame support system. As a student of Civil Engineering, we have spent extensive time on the analysis of frames and trusses. As well, the building reminded me of a wonderful vacation to Solvang, California, where the town was built primarily with this type of structure. As great as the trip was, this building initially struck me as plain, old, smothering with almost no light. It did have a quaint look to it. The building is rectangular and is much more narrow and long than it is wide. It is a wood frame with infill system. Because it is structured with long beams, it is a trabeated system. The exterior of the building consists of half timbering, named so because half of the wood timbers are visible to the eye. Also known as wattle and daub, this building is topped with a low pitched roof that looks like it is a mixture of mud and straw. The building is symmetrical when looking at its stone covered front face. Along the length of it, are a tri-repeated set of narrow windows and solid doors. The windows do not allow for much light, but maximize interior wall surface space. As for color, the building consists of a complimentary blend of earthy tones; yellows and browns.
