Emissions
Last year, Environmental Forum of Marin(EFM) Master Class 44 graduate, PatCarlone, approached Tamra Peters, Founderand Executive Director of ResilientNeighborhoods. Launched in 2010, ResilientNeighborhoods (RN) brings together groupsof residents and empowers them to reducetheir household carbon emissions throughwaste reduction, water and energyconservation, smart transportation, betterspending habits, and planet-friendly diets.A staggering 65% of Marin’s GHGemissions come from residents. By offeringa series of free, climate-action workshops,RN provides a way for people to personallyconnect with the existential threat ofclimate change, make better lifestylechoices, and form lasting communityconnections. RN has helped nearly 1,000Marin residents reduce 5 million pounds ofcarbon emissions and be more prepared foremergencies.
RN conducts a total of five, 2-hourmeetings for each community group, heldover a 10-week period. The firstassignment is to calculate your householdcarbon footprint. Participants can choosefrom over 100 “actions” to integrate intotheir lives. Every other week, teams reporton their progress: the idea is to reachcarbon neutral.

EFM presents Congressman JaredHuffman and award-winning Bay Areaauthors, Arlie Hochschild, and MarkHertsgaard, for a lively evening ofdiscussion about how and why our valuesand beliefs on environmental issues varyacross the political divide.
We all want to breathe clean air and drinkclean water, but our priorities can bemisaligned and our thinking onenvironmental standards incompatible.Finding common ground requiresunderstanding other perspectives. Can wedo this and bridge the political divide foreffective environmental problem-solving?

Marin Interfaith Climate Action (MICA), is agroup Pat Carlone began organizing inDecember 2016, as a response toCongressman Jared Huffman’s request toincrease local climate leadership. For hisMaster Class (MC 44) capstone project, Patdeveloped “The Interfaith Earth DayChallenge,” whereby MICA set a carbonfootprint reduction goal to achieve by EarthDay last April.
Pat states “as a faith-based, or religion-based, or spiritual-based, or even a secularhumanist-based organization, MICA has asits ‘raison d’etre,’ to ‘bear witness,’ that is,to do personally what is being stated in itsmanifesto: to fight climate change, toreduce global warming, to reduce andultimately eliminate dependence on fossilfuels, to improve the resilience of ourplanet — our land, our air, our water — forall living creatures. I am called upon tomake necessary changes in my own habitsof how I live my daily life.”
The MICA team of eight interfaithhouseholds set a goal to reduce their CO2emissions by 100,000 lbs — a goal thatthey not only met, but surpassed! Pat’steam announced their results at the MillValley CAN Earth Day event at Tam HighSchool. Together, the MICA team achieveda final reduction of 123,096 lbs of CO2 —the equivalent of taking 12 cars off of theroad for one year.
RN program results are shared with citypartners to help meet Marin’s ClimateAction Plan goals. RN maintains aconnection with all of its graduates andchecks in with teams for up to three years. The program has long-term extendedbenefits: 75% of participants take on new

Many Environmental Forum of Marinmembers and EFM Master Class (MC)participants have taken personal actionwith the assistance of the ResilientNeighborhoods framework. Notably, SitaKhufu (MC 39) participated in RN’s pilotprogram while serving on San Anselmo’sQuality of Life Commission; Cory Bytof (MC43) serves on RN’s steering committee andis the City of San Rafael's SustainabilityCoordinator working tirelessly to realize thevision of the City’s Climate Change ActionPlan (CCAP); Karen Mendelow Nelson (MC38) and current EFM Board Member; AprilOrcutt (MC 44); Dr. Ellie Cohen (MC guestspeaker representing Point Blue); SannaThomas (MC 43) who organized the“Tiburon Carbon Sharks” team; and ColleenDaly (MC 43) who started the “Keys CarbonBailers” team when she realized that sealevel rise would soon swallow herretirement home.
Pat Carlone is now one of nine volunteercoaches working with RN. He hopes "RNwill soon be exportable to other areasoutside Marin so that we can exponentiallyraise the number of people who are makinga difference."

Theyhave gained important insights regardingmanagement of public lands in Marin, which, together with agricultural lands, comprise approximately 90% of theproperty in the county. They have alsolearned about substantial threats to Marinposed by climate change and sea level rise, and efforts that are underway to mitigateand adapt to those threats.
For the rest of the year the Master Classwill focus on building advocacy skills thatcan be put to practical use in protecting
