This offering, in support of Alliance Great Commission Ministries, represents a celebration of what God is accomplishing through his followers. Announcements Backyard Bible ClubBackyard Bible Club is one of CCC’s summer ministries for children. It is similar to Vacation Bible School, but instead of meeting in the church building, it takes the Gospel right to your neighborhood. CCC helps with the curriculum and the funds to support your outreach effort. An orientation meeting, describing how to host and teach a club, will be held on Sunday, May 17. The C&MA began in 1887 when Dr. Albert B. Simpson created the Evangelical Missionary Alliance, which focused on bringing the hope of Christ to the most neglected missionary fields, and the Christian Alliance, which helped people pursue the deeper Christian life. In 1897, the two groups merged as a parachurch organization, and in 1974 the C&MA reorganized as a denomination. Great commission fundUnlike other organizations, the C&MA does not require its missionaries to raise their own support. Instead, missionaries and their ministries are financed through The Great Commission Fund (GCF). Attendees at C&MA churches and friends can give to this fund regularly, which enables missionaries to reach lost people for Christ, trains national leaders, provides medical help to needy patients and helps start new C&MA Churches in the US. Alliance newsOrdinary people, extraordinary faithBy Peter Burgo, Alliance editorOne of my favorite things to do is read missionary biographies. I am consistently amazed by what some have attempted—and accomplished—for the furtherance of Christ’s Kingdom. And having recently been given the responsibility to oversee the U.S. C&MA Archives, I have been blessed with unlimited access to one of the world’s richest legacies of pioneer missions.

Yesterday I unlocked the glass doors of the cabinet housing the personal Bible of C&MA pioneer missionary Dr. Robert H. Jaffray, who is widely credited with the establishment of C&MA work in China, Vietnam and Indonesia. In the margin next to Isaiah 33:15–16, Jaffray had penned the words, “feet, hands, heart, ears, eyes.” I tried to imagine what was going through his mind and heart as he scribbled these words. Was he preparing a lesson to disciple new converts? Working through the rigorous translation of Scripture into a native dialect? Or planning an arduous trek into the uncharted interior of cannibalistic New Guinea? My curiosity drove me to reread Let My People Go, a revealing biography of Jaffray written by A. W. Tozer in 1947. If you haven’t read it, you must. If you have, read it again!

However, I have a somewhat schizophrenic response to such biographies. In one sense, I delight in the sacrificial, gritty resolve that drove these men and women to attempt unfathomable things for Christ and His Kingdom. But in my more insecure moments, I wonder why God would choose to create some to be so extraordinary and others more . . . well . . . ordinary—like me. In this vulnerable state, I can always count on the enemy of my soul to point out my shortcomings and failures. Satan’s paralyzing plan aims to keep Christ’s transforming work in me under my radar, and His work through me sufficiently contained.

Does this happen to you? The very things meant to spur you to greater works end up becoming crushing monuments to your own inadequacy? Well, fellow saints, too much is at stake for us to wallow any longer. Completing the Great Commission will require the mobilization of every fully devoted disciple (Matt. 28:19), and Christ has equipped us for the task.

Kingdom investmentFinancial resources are a blessing, a result of God’s provision and a tool to be used to worship God. Followers of Christ acknowledge that material possessions belong to God and the return of money to the local church is an investment in the Kingdom.

What should I know about Kingdom investing?It is a privilege to participate in the work of the local church by contributing cheerfully, sacrificially and generously (emphasis on II Corinthians 8 and 9). Through prayer, seek a clear conscience in regard to investing in the work God has given CCC to accomplish. If you are visiting or you are not yet a follower of Christ, make today’s priority to focus on the larger issue: the relationship God offers through Jesus.
