With 11 years of GSM-R experience, Huawei Technologies has made great improvements to its Global Systems for

Mobile Communications-Railway (GSM-R) solutions. GSM-R is an international digital wireless communications

standard that is fast replacing analog radio networks, thanks to its superior handling of ground-to-train

communications. Some highlights of Huawei’s progress in GSM-R include.

2002: Huawei Technologies commences research and development for GSM-R.2005: Huawei’s first GSM-R projects are successfully rolled out and put into operation.2009: Huawei is awarded a major GSM-R project in Australia, which also represents Huawei’s first presence in

the global GSM-R market.

Huawei’s Progress in GSM-R Sochi Line : Preparing for the 2014 Winter Games in Russia

2011: In preparation for the XXII Olympic Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in Russia, Huawei is

awarded a contract to build the GSM-R network for the Sochi line.

2012: EKB line, which is ETCS-2 standard and integrated with NSN core.

2013: GSM-R South Africa awarded to Huawei.

2013: Multivendor integration completed in Turkey.

2014: GSM-R Zambia awarded to Huawei, Regional ETCS (ETCS-3).Today: Huawei GSM-R covers more than 20,000 kilometers worldwide.

In China alone, Huawei in 2013 was awarded 72 percent of total GSM-R contracted lines. Today, Huawei's

GSM-R technology is recognized by railways around the world, with customers in Australia, China, Italy, Russia,

South Africa, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and the United Arab Emirates. Huawei GSM-R sales in the international

market exceeds Huawei’s domestic GSM-R contract awards positioning Huawei far ahead of the competition.

The Sochi railway is a modern transport infrastructure being

prepared for the XXII Olympic Games and XI Paralympic Winter

Games in Sochi, Russia, in 2014. It runs about 157 kilometers

with passing Tuapse , Sochi, Adler, Alpika Service, and Vesyeloe.

At the end of 2011, Huawei was awarded the contract to build

Sochi’s GSM-R network, including the access and core networks.

To guarantee the highest reliability for the Sochi railway, Huawei

is supplying a hot-standby core network. Dual-homing Mobile

Switch Center (MSC), duo-location Base Station Controller (BSC),

and redundant Transceiver (TRX) guarantee superior end-to-end

EKB Line : ERTMS L2 Multi-vendor System for Turkey

Metropolitan Line, Australia

Measuring 466 kilometers in length and designed for speeds of

up to 250 km/h, the Eskisehir, Kutahya, and Balıkesir (EKB) line is

an integral part of the “Target 2023 Plan” launched by the

Turkish State Railways (TCDD). The EKB Line will greatly enhance

interconnectivity between Eskisehir, Kutahya, and other major

Turkish cities, promoting economic development in the local

communities.

Huawei was awarded the contract in 2012 to provide wireless

access equipment for the EKB project. The EKB line winds through

42 tunnels and requires high-quality GSM-R service. The rugged

terrain poses significant challenges to construction, including site selection for base stations, comprehensive

signal coverage requirements, and smooth communication throughout each tunnel. Leveraging its latest innova-

tions in GSM-R, Huawei offers TCDD a unique distributed base station technology. The new technology features

the Remote Radio Unit (RRU) multi-site co-cell, which provides improved quality of service under complex

situations and maximum deployment flexibility, as well as enhanced tunnel coverage along the line.

Turkey’s national GSM-R implementation represents a typical multivendor network with GSM-R and ETCS

solutions interconnecting seamlessly. Responsible for the design and implementation of the EKB line, Huawei

carried out the GSM-R multivendor integration in accordance to IOT procedures published by the European

Railway Agency, ERA. In 2013, Huawei’s Base Station Sub System, BSS for EKB was successfully integrated to the

core network from another GSM-R manufacturer with the end to end system meeting all parameters set in the

GSM-R specifications

At the end of 2009, Huawei was awarded Australia’s metropolitan line

project, covering more than 690 kilometers of metropolitan tracks,

including 76 tunnels with a total length of 70 kilometers.

Huawei’s solution replaces the existing analog radio network, offering

greater coverage and more features. Huawei’s GSM-R solution consists

of Base Station Subsystem (BSS) and Network Switching Subsystem (NSS)

network elements. The design includes Huawei’s GSM-R duo-location

BSC, MGW Pool, SGSN/GGSN Pool, and BTS TRX N+1 backup. To meet

demanding customer requirements in the challenging environment inside

rail tunnels, Huawei installed its market-leading distributed base station.

The network also was designed in a way to enable the customer to easily

upgrade to ETCS L2 and operate at frequencies up to 1,800 MHz.

Shah-Habshan-Ruwais Railway : The First ETCS L2 Line for New UAE Railway Network

The Cape Town-Durban-Gauteng Railway line is in the first phase of a

countrywide GSM-R project in South Africa. This first section will have a

total length of 1,200 kilometers and a designed speed of 120 km/h. The

Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) is replacing its traditional

MTP1327 analog system, which was deployed 15 years ago to provide

ground-to-train voice services. The GSM-R digital signaling radio system

will significantly improve passenger rail transport for large portions of

South Africa’s population.

Huawei was awarded the GSM-R contract for access and core network

architectures in 2012. Huawei’s latest evolution of wireless rail communi-

cation technology will make available operational GSM-R voice and data

services. The new system is designed to meet Europe’s ETCS L2 train

signaling system requirements. It consists of a series of network

infrastructure products and solutions, including distributed GSM-R base

stations, IP-core network, and optical transmission equipment.

Etihad Rail, developer and operator of the UAE’s national railway network, plans a

1,200-kilometer network to extend across the country by 2018. The first stage is

the essential Shah-Habshan-Ruwais line. It will connect urban and industrial areas, opening new links to Saudi

Arabia in the west and Oman in the east. The first section is 264 kilometers, with a designed speed of up to

120 km/h (freight) . The line will operate under ETCS L2 Train control.

North-South and East-West Lines : Turkmenistan Telecommunication Upgrade Project

Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express

Turkmenistan is an important transport hub for the entire Eurasia region. The national railway system in Turkmenistan extends to more than 3,600 kilometers of rail corridors in east to west and north to south orientation.

The north-south line and the 590-kilometer east-west line are the first and third phases in a total of seven phases of Turkmenistan’s Rail communications upgrade plan. Huawei was awarded this GSM-R contract in 2012 to implement an end-to-end solution, including wireless access, core network, and terminals. The core network is considered the industry’s most integrated GSM-R core, with superior reliability based on Huawei’s eCNS300 equipment, in a compact, single cabinet.

In December 2007, Huawei Technologies was selected to design and build a GSM-R voice and data communication system for the high-speed line between the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong line, using a CTCS-3 train signaling system (coherent to ETCS L2), was China’s first operational GSM-R line with a speed designed to reach 350 km/h.

About one-third of the high-speed line runs through hilly terrain that required extensive construction of bridges, cuttings, and tunnels. The 10.8-kilometer Shiziyang tunnel, the longest in the system, is an underwater dual-cave shield tunnel that reflects the shape of the shuttle and leaves very little room for Radio Frequency (RF) equipment.

Huawei’s BSS solution for this challenging environment consists of a combination of conventional BTS and repeater equipment, as well as distributed base stations. Huawei GSM-R is compatible with the two signaling systems of the mainland and Hong Kong and interworks with NSS equipment provided by other vendors. This multi-vendor GSM-R / CTCS L3 project significantly reduces travel times between Hong Kong and 16 mainland cities.

Hada Line : High-speed Railway at 350 km/h Chengguan Railway — First GSM-R Softswitch in Rail Operation

The Hada Railway project is a major high speed rail construction

project connecting the cities of Harbin in Heilongjiang Province

with Dalian in Liaoning province. The total length is 895 kilome-

ters of GSM-R track. The system is designed for train speeds of

350 km/h. To ensure safe operation of this network, the line is

managed through Chinese Train Control System-3 (CTCS-3), which

is coherent with the European Train Control System Level 2 (ETCS

L2).

Huawei was awarded the contract in July 2010 to design and

supply a GSM-R access and core network solution as part of the

National Eleventh Five-Year Plan. Huawei designed the network to

be fully compliant with the stringent requirements of the CTCS-3

signaling system. Components include Huawei’s Softswitch core

network with MSC dual-homing and distributed base station

system.

Huawei Technologies was chosen to design and supply a GSM-R

access and core network solution for the Chengguan Railway

project, which runs between the cities of Chengdu and Dujiang-

yan in Sichuan Province. It is a railway line designed for train

speeds of up to 250 km/h.

Huawei’s R4 Softswitch core network was successfully installed on

this line, proving its market-leading network reliability. The

Chengguan project was the very first GSM-R project in China

equipped with R4 Softswitch technology, underscoring Huawei’s

lead in transportation technology. Huawei not only designed,

built, and put this network into operation, but also interconnected

and integrated the Chengguan GSM-R system with other vendors’

GSM-R core networks located in Beijing and Wuhan.

Hada Line : High-speed Railway at 350 km/h Chengguan Railway — First GSM-R Softswitch in Rail Operation

The Hada Railway project is a major high speed rail construction

project connecting the cities of Harbin in Heilongjiang Province

with Dalian in Liaoning province. The total length is 895 kilome-

ters of GSM-R track. The system is designed for train speeds of

350 km/h. To ensure safe operation of this network, the line is

managed through Chinese Train Control System-3 (CTCS-3), which

is coherent with the European Train Control System Level 2 (ETCS

L2).

Huawei was awarded the contract in July 2010 to design and

supply a GSM-R access and core network solution as part of the

National Eleventh Five-Year Plan. Huawei designed the network to

be fully compliant with the stringent requirements of the CTCS-3

signaling system. Components include Huawei’s Softswitch core

network with MSC dual-homing and distributed base station

system.

Huawei Technologies was chosen to design and supply a GSM-R

access and core network solution for the Chengguan Railway

project, which runs between the cities of Chengdu and Dujiang-

yan in Sichuan Province. It is a railway line designed for train

speeds of up to 250 km/h.

Huawei’s R4 Softswitch core network was successfully installed on

this line, proving its market-leading network reliability. The

Chengguan project was the very first GSM-R project in China

equipped with R4 Softswitch technology, underscoring Huawei’s

lead in transportation technology. Huawei not only designed,

built, and put this network into operation, but also interconnected

and integrated the Chengguan GSM-R system with other vendors’

GSM-R core networks located in Beijing and Wuhan.

Daqin Line : First Commercial GSM-R Application over GPRS to be Upgraded to IP-core

The Daqin Railway connects the city of Datong with the city of Qinhuangdao and, in 2005, became China’s first railway

line to be equipped with Huawei’s GSM-R technology.

The Daqin line is mainly used for coal transportation and is recognized as one of the most important heavy-haul railways

in China. Trains traveling a total length of 2,700 meters, with up to 214 coaches, operate on multiple engines distributed

between the individual coaches. These traction units are operated and synchronized from a single driver using Huawei’s

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) data solution. The Daqin line was the first to use this GPRS-based solution, and,

since the commercial launch of the line, its freight throughput has increased by 400 percent and annual capacity has

reached 400 million tons.

To further improve operational reliability of the end-to-end system, the Daqin railway line was successfully migrated from

its R99 platform to a modern R4 Softswitch platform in January 2011. Huawei designed and carried out the GSM-R core

network upgrade in full compliance to the customer’s requirement to maintain full rail operations on Daqin line through-

out the whole upgrade process. The successful migration of the Daqin 3GPP GSM-R network represents an important

milestone for GSM-R network operators around the world, since many GSM-R networks today would greatly benefit

from the additional features offered by an R4 platform. This project demonstrates that high-reliability GSM-R networks

can be migrated while maintaining full rail operation.

Due to the large number of tunnels, long slopes, and other complex terrain making up the

Daqin railway, traditional repeaters were installed during the initial phase of the project to meet wireless coverage

requirements. As cargo throughput increased, demands on wireless reliability also increased. In May 2013, the railway’s

original mobile repeater solution was replaced by Huawei’s distributed BTS DBS3900 to meet the customers demanding

reliability requirements. It was the industry first that Huawei’s GSM-R DBS3900 Distributed Base Station system replaced

a conventional repeater based solution.

Huawei installed 70 sets of DBS3900 distributed base stations over more than 20 long slopes, tunnels, and regions with

complex RF situations. The replacement of mobile repeaters by DBS3900 stations has greatly enhanced network perfor-

mance, improving efficiency and safety on the heavy-load Daqin Railway.

Jingjiu Line: The Longest Railway in China

The Jingjiu Railway project is the largest single rail project in

China, with a total length of 2,553 kilometers. This rail project

connects the cities of Beijing and Jiulong in Hong Kong with a

railway line designed for train speeds of up to 200 km/h. The

Jingjiu Railway is considered to be a significant section of the

national railway network, since it connects northern and

southern China.

Huawei Technologies was selected in 2009 for the design and

supply of a GSM-R radio solution for the northern section of the

Jingjiu Railway project. Following the success of implementation

on the initial northern section, Huawei Technologies was then

awarded in late 2010 to also design and supply the southern

section of this GSM-R network.
