    Off the path

The main valley of Vals, with its continuation Zervreila, runs throughthe Adula mountains for five to six hours, right up to their highest

summit, the Rheinwaldhorn (3400 m above sea level.), and is flankedby the sizeable side valleys Toml, Peil and Kanal. () The Valsborders ends at the Tessin Bleniotal valley.

    Zwschet leida, ruucha Brga.

The Adula mountains primarily consist of gneiss, which is supportedby dolomite and other stones. The Vals mountains are a well known

location for beautiful and rare minerals. Vals is most known to hikers for its abundance of water. From spring to sprin g, stream by streamflowing and murmuring; countless waterfalls, white ribbons, sprayingarcs and terrifying waves fall from high up on the cliffs into the gorges.

    Mountain. Stone. Water

Mountain, stone, water building in the stone, building with stone, into the mountain, building out of the mountain, being inside themountain how can the implications and the sensuality in the associa-

concept was designed by following up these questions; s o that it alltook form step by step.Book Peter Zumthor Therme Vals ,

    Therapeutic Springs

The Vals thermal and mineral springs originate on the left side of thevalley, 20 to 25 meters above the valley floor on the hotel and spa

grounds. Drilled in 1980, the most import ant well is located south ofthe Hotel Therme and protected by a modern str ucture.

The mineral spring water is used by both the Hotel und ThermalbadBad Vals ag and the Valser Mineralquellen ag. The springs ar e owned

    by the community of Vals.

    Temperature and Minerali zation

For millions of years water has collec ted in five billion tons of Bndnerschist, it has seeped through cracks and crevices down to a depth

of 1,000 meters and penetrated the dolomite rock layer, from whence

it finally resurfaces at the foot of Piz Aul.

The water tapped by the new borehole dr illed in 1980 emerges at atemperature of 30 C. These thermal springs in Vals are the onlyones in Grisons and are fed by a watercourse 90 meters belo w ground. This source runs through Trias strata, a regional phenomenon that can

be observed in the Vals Valley and Lugnez.

An analysis of the chemical composition of the water clearly shows that

mineralization occurs in the Trias strata because all the dissolvedparticles found in the thermal water are also present in the various roc ks

of the Trias strata: dolomite, limestone, white marble with quartzand cellular dolomite, and in between, gray slate. The concentrationof the mineralization of the water is 1,918 milligrams | liter and canbe broken down as follows: calcium 436, magnesium 54, sodium 10.7,chloride 2.5, fluoride 0.63, iron 6, iodide 0.02, potassium 2.0, manganese

0.03, hydrogen carbonate 386, sulfate 990, silicic acid 25. for Stone and Water, Summer 2003

    The Selva House

Seven stories high, the Selva House, located in front of the Hotel

Therme, is connected to the main building by a covered passage. Thismeans you can go to the spa in just your bathrobe (provided by us).The Selva House retains its delicate, white sixties-style archi-

tecture. Here, too, we have already started to renovate the interior.

    Selva Stucco

The 20 Selva House rooms redesigned by Peter Zumthor are fresh

and bursting with color, we call them Selva Stucco: the walls

were done in red, blue, or yellow Venetian stucco-lustro! The darkwooden parquet flooring is warm and elegant. Travertine pavesthe showers, which open directly into the living quarters. The SelvaStucco rooms are no larger than before, but now you can luxuriate

in a king-size bed with satin she ets. (The bed is high enough for youto easily stow your bags and suitcases beneath i t. Or use the hallway

cabinets set aside for this purpose. They are room-color coded andcan be locked.) There is Valser mineral water, a stereo with a choice

of cds, bathrobe and pool slippers in each room. tv ava ilable upon re-quest and free of charge.

Selva roomsThese rooms are vaguely reminiscent of ship cabins. We have packed

as much as possible into the space available. In some rooms youwill still find the original beds mounted on walls as they were in thesixties. All rooms include a bathroom|wc and balcony. Radio, bath-robe, pool slippers, and upon request a tv are provided free of charge.

Ancillary buildi ngs the Zerfreila and Toml Houses

Only a short walk from the Therme. The rooms are appo inted likethe Selva Rooms. Bathrobe and pool slippers can be rented at the

    spa desk.

    The Buildings

    The Hotel Therme

The outward appearance of the curved buildi ng has changed littlesince the sixties; instead, its transformation into the new hotel isexpressed on the inside. Without altering the core structure of thehotel, Peter Zumthor has completely refurbished 40 rooms andenlarged the Red Restaurant. The result i s not a brash display ofmodern architecture but the preservation of the style of the hotel

    in refreshing and unexpected ways.

The Red Restaurant and the terraceThe extension of the Red Restaurant sets forth the faade of the frontsection of the main building, blending seamlessly into the existing

architecture. And yet there is an almost baroque extravagance about

the new space with its red and blue stucco-lustro wall, s ilver ceiling, canopy, and its long tables in the middle of the room. The leatherchairs, tables, and black lacquer counters were designed by Peter

Zumthor, and he enlarged and furnished the terrace to match.

The Temporaries |Hotel ThermeThe basic furnishings black lacquer pieces designed by Peter

Zumthor are the same in all rooms, and yet each room is unique:

bright kilims or gabbehs, twentieth-century furniture classics from

Eileen Gray to Mies van der Rohe to Le Corbusier to Jasper Morrison, pure silk curtains in different colors to match the carpet. You sleep in

a king-size bed with linen sheets (and two blankets, if you like), the

chocolates are made on the premises by our own confectioner, andthere are fresh apples and flowers in every room. We also provide

a stereo with a selection of cds (tv upon request and free of charge)

and, of course, a bathrobe, pool slippers, minibar, and high-speedwireless Internet.

A very special project regulates the purchase of butter oil with alpinegoat farms in the valley of Vals. The Valser Balsam, which wasspecially designed for the Therme Vals is the result of this collaboration. The characteristic of Soglio begins with the relationship with itsraw materials. Nature and origin are important in all products of Soglio, which are 100% natural, local and organic.

    Our Special Range

Water massage i n the Vals thermal exe rcise pool

Water massage is an application of alternative medicine or hydro-

therapy. The therapist stands in chest-deep water and moves theguest in accordance with predetermined figures, thus combining

the positive properties of water with the basic effects of Shiatsu. The treatment takes place in 35 C water. The body weightlessly

floating in the water- undergoes passive lengthening and stret-ching. Here, the drag of the water enhances the technique. There isa feeling of weightlessness inducing a deep relaxation. The treat-ment also benefits from the healing properties of the warm thermal

waters of Vals, such as improved peripheral circulation and a reliefof the joints. An excursion into weightlessness.

Vals hot stone massage with cleansing body peeling

During the peeling, the upper layer of skin is smoothed with refinedand gentle peeling substances. These promote circulation and theproduction of new cells, which leads to a smooth and soft complexion.

The skin is now excellently prepared for the Vals hot stone massage.Hot stone massage is a type of massage for which heated, polished

Vals quartz stones are used. The stones are heated in a water bath,at a temperature of around 60C. The aim is to relax the muscles usingheat. Apart from the emission of heat, the stones are almost unno-

ticeable, as they are very smooth, and primarily moved over the

muscles. The best pampering massage in the cold months.

    Valser Vitality

Our wellness therapists have designed this special treatment foryou: with this combination of foot reflexology and back massage thebody organs are influenced in a positive way and aches and painsare alleviated. The back and neck are often tense due to our modernlifestyle. Valser Vitality gives an invigorating effect and supports thenatural regeneration of the body. For a fresh load of vitality.
