These days, as we plan for the future of Holy Blossom Temple, responsibilities fall more heavily than ever on the shoulders of the president of the synagogue (along with his or her leadership colleagues).

Larry Babins has now stepped down a#er two years as our president, and can speak to this !rst hand.

Holy Blossom’s president, like those of other synagogues, is at the centre of the action. "e tasks are numerous, the burdens signi!cant, the pay low and the gratitude comes and goes. More importantly, the stakes for the institution are hardly small.

L E A D S H I P A N D D E V O T I O NNonetheless, leaders such as Larry Babins persevere, devoting time and e$ort,

not for personal glory, rather, for the betterment of the institution. Larry has embodied this quality and has worked tirelessly — not just over these past two years, but for many years previously. He will be missed, and we will continue to seek his counsel a#er a well-deserved vacation with Janice, who is ever-supportive of her husband’s e$orts.

Now, it is Mark Anshan’s turn at the presidency. A native Torontonian, born into the synagogue, Mark has long strongly identi!ed with this congregation — its ethos, its identity and its principles. Having assumed leadership positions beginning as a teenager, over the years Mark has headed various committees and task forces — doing so with love of the synagogue, and of the Jewish People.

We wish for Mark the same success as for Larry Babins and our previous leaders, as we understand that their success is ours. For the work isn’t easy and neither are the times.

And these days are di$erent, are they not? Change is all about us. "ings move rapidly, and in the blink of an eye, what was no longer, is.

Nonetheless, belonging and belief remain the cornerstones of a strong Jewish identity, of religious behaviour and of the possibility of knowing our God — and are best found and learned in the synagogue.

"e work done by lay leadership — o#en behind the scenes, ensuring, among other things, our !nancial stability and organizational health — is crucial in giving strength to the synagogue’s raison d’etre.

M O V I N G F O R W A R DWe wish Mark and his Board good luck and Godspeed. We are with them in the work of their hands and the hopes of their hearts, both directed to the ongoing health of Holy Blossom Temple, and no less to the service of God and the Jewish People.

When Holy Blossom Temple set the Annual Contribution Campaign fundraising goal for this year, we were mindful of the continuing economic situation and its impact on many of our members. We knew more members would be challenged to give, and still others would need us, even more, to help subsidize their membership in order to remain part of our congregation. It is through this campaign that we truly become the Reform Jewish destination for all who want to share in our community.

We are pleased to report that thanks to the generosity of the 500+ member families listed below, we raised more than $539,000. Our heartfelt thanks to all of our donors!

It is not too late to make a contribution to this year’s Annual Contribution Campaign and receive a tax receipt for the current year. Please call Shannon Tramer (ext. 227), at the Temple, to make your gi# today.

Our good fortune continues | Our Schools

Every Wednesday afternoon and Sunday morning, the buzz of our students is high in the hallways and the classrooms of Holy Blossom Temple’s Religious School. Students eagerly arrive to their classrooms ready to begin their daily studies.

A most amazing feature of our classrooms is that in each, we !nd a keen, ready-to-assist student-teacher smiling and waiting for his or her students to arrive.

O L D E R H E L P I N G YO U N G E R"is year, as in previous years, a great cadre of Grade 11 and 12 students, who have worked hard to complete their Con!rmation studies, now devote their precious Sunday mornings and/or Wednesday a#ernoons to help in classes with our youngest students. "ese student-teachers are truly a breath of fresh air. "ey are the ones who are

attuned to the rhythm of our students. At times, a friendly hello brings a younger student into a conversation. It also a$ords these younger students the opportunity to work one-on-one with a di%cult Hebrew lesson. Whatever the issue, our younger students have an older student lending a helping hand.

Our teachers are also very thankful for student-teacher assistance with our youngest students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 2, or our students in Grades 3 to 6.

Our student-teachers’ participation is an overwhelmingly positive experience for everyone: the student-teachers and the students they assist.

For many years, Myrna Ross, the Student-Teacher Coordinator, has seen her minions mature through their experiences in the classroom. Myrna spends many hours cajoling, invigorating and supporting our teens. It is always the best part of her week.

We o#en hear about the wonderful endeavours of our student-teachers: job hunting, working at summer camps

and applying to university and graduate studies. Each has been enhanced by his or her experiences while student teaching at Holy Blossom Temple.

Our oldest students are not the only ones getting into the leadership role. Each year, our Grade 6 students gather together to lead the rest of the Lower School in a day-long Chanukah Maccabiah.

"is year, like many in the past, we will have games, activities and a new bouncy dreidel castle — all organized by our Grade 6 students.

We are proud of their accomplishments as they begin the process of leadership of their fellow students. It is wonderful to see their bright eyes and smiling faces as they lead their younger counterparts.

G R O W I N G I N T O H O LY B LO S S O MLeadership at Holy Blossom is intrinsic to our growth as a congregation and community. It all begins when our members are young. And we get to enjoy a wonderful experience watching them grow.

Page 14: Document

The central mitzvah of Chanukah is to “publicize the miracle.” "at is why we place the Chanukah menorah in the window for all to see. In fearful times, however, we place it on a table inside the home. We are fortunate to live in a time and place without fear. With pride, we can put our chanukiyot in the window for neighbours and pass-ersby to take note. But which miracle are we publicizing?

According to the Books of Maccabees, the miracle was that the few defeated the many to win back Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel. According to the Talmud, the miracle was that the one cruse of pure oil with

the seal of the High Priest burned in the Temple lamp for eight days, when there seemed to be only enough for one. Our Sages had their reasons for de!ning the miracle in Supernatural terms. Perhaps they wanted to protect their own people, oppressed by Roman rule, from believing they could be triumphant, as the Maccabees were centuries earlier. Perhaps they needed to teach their own generation and those to follow that Chanukah must not be reduced to a celebration of human mili-tary might alone; it must also inspire greater reverence for Divine might, and for the miracles brought to bear when human will and Divine will strengthen one another.

Why do we say the blessing about miracles when lighting the !rst candle? It was expected that the rededicated Temple light would burn that !rst day.

No laws of physics were suspended then. "e miracle of the oil only began on the second day. What then is the miracle of the !rst day of Chanukah? Hope. Not for Divine intervention, but hope in the human will to work for a miracle. "e Hasmoneans lit the lamp, despite the fact that there was only enough oil for one day. "ey did not think it a futile e$ort to bring a little more light into the world, even for just one day. "at is the miracle of the !rst candle, which makes way for more miracles to follow.

A full chanukiyah in the window looks beautiful on the eighth night, but it could be argued that the best “publicity of miracles” is on the !rst night, when just a single candle glows with the quiet hope that extraordinary miracles can be created in the here and now.
