Annual Report 2008-2009

celebrating independence

November 2009

Dear Friends:

It has been a wonderful year at Cooke, and

as I look back on all we have accomplished,

I realize we would not be able to fulfill our

mission without the unwavering commitment

of our dedicated faculty and families.

We are so proud of the Cooke teachers and

staff, who could work in any number of other

settings where the compensation may be

higher and the challenges perhaps fewer.

Yet they return year after year because, as

one faculty member put it, “The opportunity

to make a difference in a child’s life is always

present at Cooke.” We are proud of the

families who encourage their children’s greater

independence out in the real world. And we

are immensely proud of our students, who

work hard every single day and support one

another in their struggles and triumphs.

Leading the organization is Cooke’s Board

of Directors, and it is with much gratitude

that we say farewell to Mr. Lon Jacobs, who is

stepping down after six years of extraordinary

commitment to Cooke. In addition to his

governance responsibilities, Lon has worked

tirelessly to help ensure that Cooke’s mission

of independence for persons with disabilities

extends to every child and family in our

programs. His personal generosity and

willingness to reach out on Cooke’s behalf

has been unwavering and we are grateful

to him for his years of service to our mission.

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Kenneth

I. Wirfel has agreed to step up and serve as

Cooke’s Board Chair. Mr. Wirfel and his wife,

June Eichbaum, are members of the group

of Cooke founding parents. Their daughter,

Mikhaila, was a student in our very first class,

and Ken has been an active member of the

Board of Directors since 1990. We are indeed

fortunate to have an individual of Ken’s talent

and dedication leading Cooke through our

next phase of development.

Of course, none of what we do is possible

without the support of the extended Cooke

family. Whether you are a parent, teacher,

donor, volunteer, student, or friend, you are

part of this family and we are enormously

grateful for your continued interest and support.

With our heartfelt thanks,

Michael Termini, PsyDPresident

We provide educational programsthat integrate academics, social skills and daily living skills.

INDEPENDENCE COMES

FROM THE CONFIDENCE

OUR STUDENTS

DEVELOP WITH EACH

NEW SUCCESS IN THE

CLASSROOM, IN

BUILDING FRIENDSHIPS,

AT HOME, AND IN THE

COMMUNITY AT LARGE.

“Our goal is to help students recognize that everything theyare learning in theclassroom will have a meaningful application in life.”

Francis TaboneAssistant Head

Cooke Center Academy

“Integrating all of theskills our students aredeveloping —academic, social and daily living—is our ultimate goal,” saysVirginia Trainor, a speechand language therapist whohelped to develop the cur-

riculum at the Cooke Center Academy. “We choose specific themes, andthen apply those themes to classes and activities throughout the trimester.”

For a theme on restaurants, for example, students created a mock restaurant and went grocery shopping for food. “They wrote up a menu in English class and studied nutrition in Science while learning to makehealthy choices,” says Ms. Trainor. “Math lessons included money management and figuring out the cost of items. Students studying othercountries in Social Studies visited restaurants that served cuisines fromthese countries.”

For Cooke students, academic lessons

extend well beyond the classroom.

Students use their math skills in the

grocery store, develop tools for daily

living on the bus or subway, and

strengthen their social skills while

planning an extracurricular event.

Cooke teachers, paraprofessionals,

therapists and counselors work together

as a team to put together a plan for

each student that builds on his or her

strengths as a springboard for learning

and increased independence. We work

with our school partners to develop

meaningful inclusion opportunities

that will benefit Cooke students as

well as their general education peers.

Our community partners provide

service learning and internship

opportunities that strengthen students’

identities as independent citizens.

We engage parentsas active partners in their children’seducation and as promoters of their children’s independence.

WHEN TEACHERS

AND PARENTS WORK

TOGETHER ON COMMON

GOALS, LESSONS

LEARNED IN THE

CLASSROOM CAN

BE APPLIED IN THE

REAL WORLD.

“One thing Cooke instillsin its faculty from thevery beginning is thatkids don’t come here on their own—theyhave a family with themthat is part of the entireeducational process.”

Katherine LanceCooke Head Teacher

Katherine Lance, a CookeHead Teacher, is a firm believer in the home-schoolconnection. “We work until 3 pm each day to make surechildren are acquiring newskills. In the evenings and on weekends, it’s the

families that reinforce the learning at home and at social events.”

Parents are no less important to the process as children become adolescents and then adults. “We help parents understand how they can encourage their daughter to save money, for instance, or how they can work with her on making smart food choices. We can help their son find a great internship, but they will be the ones who work with himon making sure that his tie matches his shirt as he dresses for work.”

Even before a student is accepted into

a Cooke program, Cooke is there for

the student’s family. From taking them

through the complex special education

process to determining, together,

whether Cooke is an appropriate fit,

Cooke staff members are available to

answer questions and provide support.

Once a child is enrolled, the partnership

continues. In addition to events such

as back-to-school nights, parent

association meetings, and events in

the classroom, ongoing communication

and joint goal-setting ensure that

teachers and families or guardians

are working together towards

students’ independence.

PART OF BEING

INDEPENDENT IS

BECOMING AN

INTEGRAL PART OF

ONE’S COMMUNITY—

BE IT THE SCHOOL,

NEIGHBORHOOD

OR WORKPLACE.

“Cooke has helped my son develop asense of confidencethat just naturallymakes him more independent.”

Leslie JeffriesCooke parent

Liam Jeffries has been with Cooke since he was a preschooler, when a Cooke special educationteacher worked with him in a general education classroom. Having Liam in a typical preschool class-

room was important to his family. “I thought his capabilities were vast, and we wanted him to be able to model typically developing behavior,”said his mother, Leslie Jeffries.

Liam went on to Kindergarten and elementary classes at the Cooke Center School. When his teachers realized he was skilled in math, theysuggested he take it in a general education classroom in the partnerschool. “He always had a teacher with him who could supporthim,” his mother said. “He flourished, and it became a real source of pride for him.”

This year, Liam is starting full inclusion where he will learn in a generaleducation fifth grade classroom at Cooke’s partner school, Corpus Christi.

Cooke aims to have students learn

in the least restrictive, most inclusive

setting possible, so that they are

comfortable working alongside their

peers. Cooke’s preschool, lower and

middle school classrooms are co-located

in general education schools, where

our students find many opportunities

to practice their social skills at school-

wide events and in individual classes.

Through off-site learning, students use

the community as their classroom.

At the Cooke Center Academy high

school, internships and community

service opportunities prepare students

for the workforce with placements in

New York City offices, restaurants,

museums, and other exciting venues

that match their interests.

“Eighty six percent of the 4th and 8th gradersin my school passed the NY State ELA Exam, an impressive increasefrom last year’s scores, when 70% of 4th and58% of 8th graderspassed. We attributethis increase in testscores to the efforts ofour Cooke Center literacyconsultant. Thanks tothe Cooke Center fortheir excellent work!”

Anne Marie McGoldrickPrincipal, St. James School

The Cooke Center Instituteoffers consultation and train-ing to educators and parentsin the broader community.Driven by its mission to support inclusive educationalprograms for all students—those with and without

special needs—the Institute provides literacy, math and special education consultancies to more than three dozen inner-cityparochial schools, charter schools and Head Start programs.

The Institute is now spreading Cooke’s expertise beyond the five boroughs of New York City. Presenters offered workshops last year at national educational conferences in cities including Anaheim, New Orleans,Charleston, S.C., and Phoenix.

Our ultimate goal for staff is to create

a dynamic professional culture, give

rich opportunities for professional

growth, and then to share what we

know with others.

Beyond being part of this lively learning

community, Cooke supports faculty

in updating their certifications. New

teachers work with mentors, and there

is specialized training in certain areas

of the Cooke curriculum. Many Cooke

teachers present at workshops and

conferences, and publish professional

articles. A monthly Applied Research

Group trains faculty to conduct

outcomes research in their classrooms.

There certainly is no place like Cooke! This year’s Wizard of Oz-themed Spring Gala brought Cooke $800,000 closer to its $10 million Road to Independencefundraising goal. With all proceeds supporting the Campaign, the Spring Gala—held at Cipriani 42nd Street on April 27th—pushed the campaign total to over $9 million!

Lon Jacobs, Senior Executive Vice President and Group General Counsel ofNews Corporation, received the Founders’Award for his tireless efforts in heading theRoad to Independence Campaign, and hisleadership in all of Cooke’s endeavors.

Receiving the Road to IndependenceAward was NASDAQ OMX, which hasbeen tremendously supportive of Cooke’stechnology efforts and its programming forolder teens.“The innovation and creativitythat defines Cooke is seen every day inmany ways, both big and small,” said Bruce Aust, Executive Vice President for NASDAQ’s Corporate Client Group.

Fox 5’s Ernie Anastos and Dari Alexanderhosted the event, which included a video sneak-peek of Cooke’s very first high schoolproduction: The Wizard of Oz.

Cooke is grateful to all of its generoussupporters for this extraordinarily successful event.

At a June 1 ceremony at the Cooke Center Academy,Cooke officially inaugurated the Moody’s FoundationTransition Office. We did this to recognize the Found-ation’s generous, long-time support for the Transition to Life program. The Moody’s Foundation has made it possible for Cooke to hire the social workers and other staff needed to develop this unique program, and the curriculum that supports it.

CCA students were on hand at the naming ceremonyto share their stories about the corporate internships andvolunteer placements that have been made as a result ofthe Transition program. In addition to hosting staff fromboth the Foundation and Moody’s Corporation, Cookewas delighted to welcome Lisa Westlake (pictured to theright), our newest board member and Moody’s ChiefHuman Resources Officer, to take part in the ceremony.

The New Friends of Cooke Summer Soirée drew 400guests to the Tribeca Rooftop in June, where revelers enjoyed delicious food and cocktails while catching up with friends. The inaugural event raised $35,000 for the Road to Independence Campaign.

“Our friends had a great time, and they were really interested in learning more about Cooke,” said CharlesMiller, son of Cooke board member Roger Miller andbrother of Nicky Miller, one of Cooke’s first studentswho passed away two years ago.

Charles and his brother Ian founded New Friends of Cooke just after Nicky’s passing, when the group ran a 5K race to benefit Cooke in Nicky’s memory. Hoping to build on the momentum from the race, Cooke launched the Summer Soirée to bring togetheryoung supporters for an annual event.

Corporate sponsors included Hogan & Hartson LLP, Moody’s Corporation , Greenberg Traurig LLP, Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP, Bryan Cave LLP, Gilt Groupe and News Corporation.
