Smartchoicescan reduce yourrisk for cancerCancer does not discriminate, afflicting men, women andchildren regardless of their race, ethnicity or gender. While there’sno way you can fully protectyourself from cancer, there areways to reduce your risk ofdeveloping cancer. Some of the most effective ways tolower your cancer risk is to makecertain lifestyle choices. Many ofthese choices will not only reduceyour risk of developing cancer butalso improve your overall qualityof life.Avoid tobacco. According to theCenters for Disease Control andPrevention, lung cancer causesmore deaths than any other cancer. The majority of lung cancer casesare caused by cigarette smoking, and male smokers are 23 timesmore likely to develop lung cancerthan men who don’t smoke.Women who smoke are 13 timesmore likely to develop lung cancerthan their nonsmokingcounterparts. In addition, theUnited States Department ofHealth and Human Services notesthat smoking can also cause a hostof other cancers, including cancerof the larynx, mouth and throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, pancreas, cervix, and stomach.Avoiding tobacco entirely candrastically reduce your risk ofdeveloping any of these cancers.Don’t allow others to smokearound you. Even people whodon’t smoke might be at asignificant risk of developingcancer if they allow others tosmoke around them. In a 2006report titled “The HealthConsequences of InvoluntaryExposure to Tobacco Smoke,” HHSresearchers revealed that cancer-causing and toxic chemicals arehigher in secondhand smoke thanin the smoke inhaled by smokers.Exposure to secondhand smoke athome or at work increases your
risk by to 20 to 30 percent, so don’tallow others to smoke in yourpresence.Avoid heavy alcoholconsumption. The World HealthOrganization notes that studiesconducted around the globe havefound that regular alcoholconsumption increases a person’srisk of developing mouth, voicebox and throat cancers. In 2007,WHO researchers published astudy that found dailyconsumption of roughly 50 grams,or less than two ounces, of alcoholdoubles or triples a person’s risk ofthe aforementioned cancerscompared with the risk innondrinkers.Numerous studies have also foundthat moderate alcoholconsumption can reduce risk forother diseases, including coronaryartery disease. As a result, men andwomen should discuss alcoholconsumption with their physicianand, if they do consume alcohol, always do so in moderation.Protect your skin. Though lungcancer might be the most deadlycancer, skin cancer is among themost prevalent. That’s especiallydisconcerting, as skin cancer islargely preventable. Men, womenand children who protect their skinfrom the sun when spending timeoutdoors can drastically reducetheir risk of developing skincancer, which is the most commonform of cancer in the United States.Seek shade, apply sunscreen andwear protective clothing, includinga hat and sunglasses, to reduceyour exposure to the sun’spotentially harmful ultravioletrays. Though anyone can developcancer, there are many choicespeople can make that candrastically reduce their risk ofjoining the millions of people whoreceive a cancer diagnosis eachyear.
