Introduction 2018 Highlights

There is much excitement in this year’s HSC highlights.

The 2018 HSC results reflect outstanding achievement by graduates across all subject areas. We celebrate the effort of these young women and their teachers, who have worked so hard to achieve these outcomes.

At Roseville College, we seek to equip each girl to realise her purpose.

As a non-selective school, ours is one that truly seeks to partner with each girl as she lives and learns for purpose; upholding excellence in learning, depth of character, and persevering to achieve her very best.

I am delighted to let you know that Roseville College students received 198 acknowledgements of merit and distinguished achievement. Among the outstanding results are the NSW First in Course results achieved by Sarah Leatherbarrow (in Visual Arts) and Lucy Watson (in Studies of Religion 1) and another four students achieving results in the top ten of candidates in the State. These are exceptional achievements.

On behalf of all of us at Roseville College, I am extremely proud of the Class of 2018. You are to be commended for your success and leadership at Roseville College, striving for excellence and great character in all things. You are remarkable young women, entrusted with great ability, tenacity and purpose. I congratulate each one of you and wish you every blessing in your next step in life and learning.

• Four students achieved an ATAR of 99.00 or above

• 28% of students achieved an ATAR of 95.00 or above

• 56% of students achieved an ATAR of 90.00 or above.

University Early Admission Offers

• 68% of the cohort were offered a place at University before completing the HSC

• 77 University Early Admission Offers from five leading universities, representing an 80% success rate for applications from Roseville College students

• 94% success rate for the Macquarie University Global Leadership Entry Program

• 92% success rate for the University of Wollongong Early Admissions Program.

College Dux and HSC Dux

Eva Yijia Wang

It is a pleasure to announce Yijia (Eva) Wang as College Dux and HSC Dux in 2018, with an ATAR of 99.80.

Yijia is a focused young woman, who works hard academically in pursuit of her goal to, one day, attend Oxford University. In her studies, Yijia sought balance through languages and music; but her passion is mathematics. In 2018 Yijia achieved Academic Excellence, as well as First in Course in Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2, and Japanese Continuers, Japanese Extension, Music 2, and English as Second Language (ESL).

Yijia thanks her friends and teachers, especially those who gave her a greater insight to understanding herself, for their outstanding support, and thanks her family for the freedom they have given her to pursue her interests.

Yijia leaves the College with the valete:

Year 12, 2018 is a group of young women who are known for their vibrancy, determination and support of each other. Regardless of the results, these things remain.

While our mark may seem all-consuming this week, it is not what we will be remembered for. In the words of Maya Angelou,

People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did; but people will never forget how you made them feel.

Be proud of all that you have achieved this year, big or small. Celebrate that which can never be reflected in a mark; your strengths, your friendships and your memories.

I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for the Class of 2018 and the impact each person will have on the world.

Captain 2013 Lucy Allen

In speaking to the Graduating Class of 2018 at their Valedictory Dinner, Lucy confessed that when she left school, she had no idea what she would do with her life, other than pursue something creative that pushed her thinking.

Lucy enrolled in a double degree in Bachelor of Visual Communications with a Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation (BCII) at the University of Technology Sydney, graduating in May 2018. In her final year, she and two friends founded www.stitchhub.org, a platform inspired by Lucy’s experience of growing up with Type 1 Diabetes. Today, Lucy continues to develop Stitchhub and works at UTS in the Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation on learning design and development. She also produced her first independent show this year at the Depot Theatre in Marrickville.

None of this was planned, confesses Lucy. “Nowhere along the journey have I had a clear idea of how or what I wanted to be doing. What has helped me is this: having clear values, aspirations and a personal ‘why’ that empowers me to explore and identify new opportunities.”

Lucy describes her experience as a student at Roseville College as the best of the best. “I was lucky to be part of a truly wonderful year group who shared a fantastic sense of sisterhood,” she says.

Dux 2013 Jessica Woodhouse

Awarded an ATAR of 99.4, Jessica was College and HSC Dux, and was recognised as an All Rounder by the NSW Premier.

Jessica received The UNSW Academic Achievement Award 2013 and was nominated for an academic scholarship by Roseville College, which enabled her to progress straight into the University’s undergraduate Law program. This year, after five years of study, Jessica realised her ambition of completing an Arts/Law degree, majoring in criminology.

Jessica currently works at a boutique Wills and Estates firm (where she works mainly in the area of litigation), while simultaneously completing her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice at the College of Law. She next aims to be admitted as a Solicitor in NSW by June 2019.

Jessica has always sought to make the most of her time and the opportunities before her.

“When I’m not working or studying, I play club softball on Saturday afternoons with some of the Old Girls I used to play Saturday sport with! I also love to read, which was something highly encouraged at Roseville College,” she says.

“I’m still incredibly close with my school friends and we catchup at least once a week. The Class of 2013 celebrated our 5 year reunion last week and it was great to see everyone together since finishing school.”

Jessica has also enjoyed a lot of travel since completing Senior School, in particular to Europe to visit family. She has also completed study trips to Chile, and vacations to New Zealand and Indonesia.
