The Professional Landcare Network (PLANET), an international association serving landscape profession- als, awarded their 2012 Grand Prize for the Environmental Improvement Awards to local landscape contractor, Rood Landscape, LLC, of Hobe Sound. The prize was awarded for the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Project, an environmentally and historically sensitive site in Palm Beach County. Rood Landscape was tasked with eradicating invasive plant materials that had colonized around the lighthouse, preventing future soil erosion, and providing an appropriate plant palette for the site’s proximity to the ocean environment. Rood also faced a unique challenge - protecting the native Indian-shell mound the lighthouse was built on. “As the site has enormous archeological significance, no digging could take place without an archeologist pres- ent,” reported project manager Ron Vekeman. The “exotic” sansevieria at the site was carefully removed, and after an erosion control geo-grid fabric was applied at the north side of the lighthouse to assure stabilization, the new planting took place. A plant palette of approved native plants was chosen for their ability to withstand the site’s environmental elements, including proximity to the coastal waterways and the Atlantic Ocean. New irrigation was provided by Rood Landscape’s sister company, Treasure Coast Irrigation. PLANET’s Environmental Improvement Awards pro- gram is designed to reward independent interiorscapers and landscape and lawn care professionals who execute superior projects. The overall Grand Prize is awarded to one project Nation-wide, which demonstrates expertise and superiority in the green industry. “We are honored to be this year’s recipient of the PLANET Awards Grand Prize, and are thankful for the opportunity to contribute to such a valuable project,” said Tom Balling, Rood Landscape President, of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Project. Rood Landscape was founded in 1964 by local pio- neer Roy S. Rood. Owners Tom Balling and Scott Fay strive to carry forward Mr. Rood’s legacy of excellence in the green industry, employing over 150 landscape and irrigation designers, managers, and installers. When you retire, you may well have accomplishedsome important financial goals, such as sending yourchildren through college and paying off your mortgage.Yet, you can’t relax just yet, because your retirementcould easily last two or three decades, which meansyou’ll need at least two or three decades’ worth ofincome — which, in turn, means you’ll need the prop-er savings and investment strategies in place. And, justas importantly, you’ll also need to be aware of the typesof risk that could threaten these strategies.

Let’s consider some of these risks:• Longevity — None of us can say for sure how long

we’ll live. But it's still important to have an estimate, based on your health and family history. So if you thinkyou may live, for 25 years in retirement, you’ll want towithdraw enough from your investments each year toenjoy a comfortable lifestyle — but not so much thatyou deplete your funds before the 25 years have passed.

• Inflation — We’ve experienced pretty mild infla-tion over the past few years. But over time, even a lowrate of inflation can seriously erode your purchasingpower. To illustrate: If your current monthly costs are$3,000, with only a 3% annual inflation rate, thatwould be about $4,000 in 10 years. And in 25 years atthat same rate, your monthly costs will have more thandoubled, to about $6,200. To help protect yourselfagainst inflation risk, it's important to have at leastsome investments that offer growth potential, ratherthan only owning fixed-income vehicles, such as cer-tificates of deposit (CDs). You’ll also want to considersources of rising income potential, such as dividend-paying stocks. (Keep in mind, though, that stocks canreduce or discontinue dividends at any time and aresubject to market fluctuation and loss of principal.)

• Market Fluctuations — When you retire and begintaking withdrawals from your investment portfolio —that is, when you begin selling off investments — you’dobviously like prices to be high. After all, the classic pieceof investment advice is “buy low, sell high.” But it’simpossible to try to “time” the market this way, as it willalways fluctuate. That’s why you may want to considersources of income whose value is not dependent on what’shappening in the financial markets. Your financial advi-sor may be able to recommend investments that can pro-vide you with this type of income stream.

• Low interest rates — Many retirees depend onfixed-rate investments for a good portion of theirretirement income — so it’s a real challenge wheninterest rates are low. Consequently, when you retire,

you’ll certainly need to beaware of the interest-rateenvironment and the incomeyou can expect from theseinvestments. Longer-termfixed-rate vehicles may betempting, as they typicallyoffer higher rates than short-er-term ones, but these longerterm investments may havemore price fluctuation andinflation risk than shorter-term investments. Consequently, you'll still likelyneed balance between short, intermediate, and long-term investments to provide for a portion of yourincome in retirement.

Retirement can be a rewarding time in your life. Andyou can help make your retirement years even moreenjoyable by understanding the relevant investmentrisks and taking steps to address them.
