Her parents came here from New York City where her father, James Diamond, was a sound engineer for motion picture and theatrical equipment. His job was setting up projection rooms in the homes of the rich and famous. He was sent to Hobe Sound by his boss, William Barstow. The Jupiter Island Tangerine Theatre was being established and James came here to “get the word out” about the new theatre. In 1934 James and Catherine Diamond, saw a need for transportation services for seasonal visitors. They established Diamond Transfer & Garage and met trains and planes and provided personal service to visitors to the lovely east coast of Florida. In the 1940’s they became the first car rental business in Martin County. It has been verified that they are the oldest existing independent car dealership in Martin County as they have a continuous certification as such since 1946 to today. They were also the only local station licensed to sell gas during WWII. Through the years Suzanne and her family lived in several different homes in Hobe Sound including one on Plutus Avenue and one on Apollo Street (right across from the Apollo School) in what is known as “The Captain’s House.” They also spent a few years living on Jupiter Island. Sue remembers riding with her father on Jupiter Island one morning when she was very young and he said to her, “Sue, we are the luckiest people in the world to live every day in such a beautiful place.” Sue attended the Apollo School up to the 5th grade and then attended Stuart High School, now known as Martin County High School. After graduation from the University of Florida she taught school in the Port Orange/Daytona Beach area where she met her hus- band, Charles (Chuck) Martin. They raised 4 sons, Danny, Retired Army now living in Texas; Kenny, a United Airlines pilot living in South Dakota, Mike who works at Publix and Pat, a graduate of the University of Florida and has worked for the family business in all aspects since 1987. Besides being the current owner of Diamond Transfer & Garage, Sue serves on the Board of Directors of the Apollo School. Her tales of life in Hobe Sound are many and a true history of this small hamlet. She said that the philosophy in Hobe Sound has always been, “Whoever needs help, you go and give help.” She especial- ly referenced the aftermath of the hurricanes of 2004 when they delivered ice to families who were without power in Banner Lake. Sue remembers in 1948 the moving of the church from Camp Murphy by barge up the river to East Ocean Boulevard in Stuart, and in 1952, the laying of the foundation for St. Christopher’s Catholic Church. In the early days when the train passed through Hobe Sound her father would go out with a lantern and that would mean the train should stop to pick up passengers or railway express items such as the trunks of the seasonal visitors. The train would carry mail and when it reached Hobe Sound the bag of letters would be tossed out of the train onto the platform; the outgoing mailbag was hung on a post next to the tracks and a conductor would reach a hook out of the train and pick it off as the train traveled through. Diamond Transfer & Garage won the first Christmas Parade trophy 31 years ago. It still rests in the shop on the corner of Bridge and Dixie. The win- ning entry was Danny Martin driving an antique car with a Christmas Tree sticking out the back and titled it “Bringing Home the Tree.” They won again the next year as well. This year we are honored to have as our Grand Marshal, Suzanne Diamond Martin, Hobe Sound native and owner of a business that has existed here for over 80 years! If you get a chance to sit and chat with Sue you are sure to learn a lot about our hometown of Hobe Sound. St. John Chrysostom GreekOrthodox Church Gears Upfor Annual Greek Festival

Often called the “Hershey Kiss church” on US 1 inHobe Sound because of its silver-domed roof, St.John Chrysostom Greek Orthodox Church will againcelebrate all things Greek at its 14th Annual GreekFestival on Jan. 19 to Jan. 22, 2017.

The family-friendly event with a nominal admis-sion charge features cultural dishes, Greek dancingand music, costumes, a complete carnival midway, sundry gifts, arts and crafts, and hand-crafted jewelry.Children under 12 are admitted free.

By far the festival's most popular attraction, whichdraws festival-goers from throughout Martin County

and beyond, is the tempting array of authentic Greekdishes. The women of the church are the principalbakers, planning now to bake more than 1,000 each ofGreece's signature delectables, including traditionalbaklava, a flaky triangular pastry layered with choppedwalnuts and sweetened with homemade syrup.

The choices also include kourambiedes, a short-bread cookie prepared traditionally for weddings, orkouloukaria, a Greek sugar cookie, or any other ofabout a dozen treats.

Fortunately, visitors do not need to pronounce whatappeals to their eye. Pointing is perfectly acceptable.

Outside, under the big tent, the men of the church,“special retired Greek chefs in their own right,”according to organizers, will prepare their deliciousGreek menu of lamb shanks, Moussaka, Pastitsio,Grecian lemon chicken, Souzoukakia and more.

“Too bad they cannot wrap up the aroma inchurch's kitchen to sell as well,” says SaadiaTsaftarides, a member of the church and one of theFestival volunteers. "We're all good cooks on our own,but together we become wonderful cooks."

St. John Chrysostom Greek Orthodox Church is at10605 SE Federal Highway, adjacent to the HobeSound Library. Festival hours are from 11 a.m. to 8p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19; from 11 a.m. To 11 p.m.on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21; and from noon to8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017.

The Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce hascome a long way since its inception 35 years agoaround a kitchen table with a handful of Hobe Soundbusiness leaders.

Through the years it has grown from that handfulof members to nearly 500 members strong. Themembership is a very diverse group ranging fromhuge businesses like Waste Management, MartinHealth System, Jupiter Medical Center and SouthMartin Regional Utilities to dozens of small “Momand Pop” enterprises. It encompasses members whohave been on board from the very beginning to mem-bers brand new in the business world and to the area. Its membership ranges from Vero Beach to the north, down to Boca in the south and west across the state. This Chamber boasts a large number of “Social”members who are citizens in the community commit-ted to supporting local business and keeping abreastof news and activities happening right now.

noteworthy milestones. We hosted 11 breakfasts, and11 Business After Hours socials, 4 Wildly SuccessfulWomen’s Wednesday Luncheons, 4 Coffee Talk semi-nars and participated in several Council of Chambersevents where we partnered with the other 4 MartinCounty Chambers. Anniversaries reached during this year includeExecutive Director, Angela Hoffman celebrating 5years as the head of the organization. Jan Otten,Director of Member Services, reached 10 years inher position, and Mary Palczer, Office Manager/Bookkeeper, marked her one-year anniversary. Weare very blessed with volunteers who have been herefor many, many years filling roles in various capaci-ties. They are too numerous to name all of them, but some of note include Lillian Johnson who

passed 27 years, Bette Evans her 26th year, MargeCabaniss her 20th year, Jean Tierney over 15 years.Other volunteers with approximately 5 years areCarol Branch and Judy Arbeznik . And under 5years are Richard Nash, helping at the front deskand doing his second year as Christmas ParadeChair; Suzan Hughes, Carol Stewart, BarbaraGomez have added their talents to our office volun-teers. George Kleine whotook over Lillian’s 50/50 raffle duties and greets themembers at breakfasts and after hours with the bas-ket of tickets and a chance to share in the proceedsof the raffle. And then there are many volunteerswho help at the big events. Such as PatriceDrennan-Smith who heads up the merchandisebooth every year at the Festival of Arts and MaryLopopolo who helps with cash flow throughout theevent. There are many who step up every time tokeep the cogs in the wheel oiled and running.

In February we held the 15th Annual Festival ofthe Arts. This event brings approximately 30,000people to Hobe Sound over a two-day period. InMay we teed off for the 33rd Annual GolfTournament. In October we experienced the fourthand relatively new, sold out event, Dine AroundHobe Sound Progressive Dinner. And this yearmarks our 31st Annual Hobe Sound ChristmasParade. The Parade is the Chamber’s gift to our com-munity. Every year it gets bigger and better.
