A Message from our Pastor

“Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” In today’s Gospel we hear St. Peter’s response when he encounters Jesus and realizes that he is

the Messiah, the Son of God. This personal encounter leads him to acknowledge his own sinfulness and that he is in need of mercy. Jesus then raises him up and commissions him to become a “Fisher of Men.” Have you ever had a real encounter with Jesus, I pray you have! Those encounters with Jesus are gifts from God that allow us to realize we are sinners in need of God’s love and mercy and that we cannot save ourselves. Jesus saves us and gives us a mission, a vocation, a purpose for living our life. On Wednesday we start Lent with Ash Wednesday as we celebrate this “Year of Mercy” in Lent let us take the witness of St. Peter and acknowledge our sinfulness and ask God for a real encounter of his merciful love. That encounter will change us, as it changed St. Peter. Let us pray for that grace today and every day. God bless Fr Gannon

Special Things to be aware of in Lent Ash Wednesday Schedule: Ashes are distributed during the 9 am and 8 pm Mass and at 12pm, Noon Service of the Word; and our Church is open all day for prayer. On the Fridays of Lent we will have bi-Lingual Stations of the Cross at 7:30 pm with the opportunity for individual confessions during the stations. As we are a Jubilee “Year of Mercy” Church please try to invite everyone to church to walk through the Holy Door and go to mass with us. And, if anyone wants to go to confessions you can make your confession during the Stations of the Cross on Fridays, or on Saturdays at 4:15 pm, or on Reconciliation Monday in Holy Week from 3 to 9 pm, or call me in the office for a appointment. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY! “Holy, holy, holy!” Ancient languages, like the Hebrew used in the scriptures, did not always have a way to express superlatives in one word. Isaiah could

not say God was “holiest,” so he used the threefold repetition of the same word. This bit of scriptural minutiae about these “three little words” that we sing at every Mass serves as a reminder that answering God’s call has to be grounded in awareness of God’s holiness. In Isaiah and in the Gospel passage today, we hear accounts of the revelation of God’s power and might: the seraphim in the temple and the miraculous catch of fish. These are not wondrous revelations for their own sakes. They lead to a response in mission, Isaiah’s “Here I am, send me!” and the disciples’ leaving everything to follow Jesus. And so must our own “Holy, Holy, Holy!” lead us to Christ in the Eucharist every Sunday, and to a life following him day by day. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Fasting may be a priority in your Lenten spring cleaning regimen. Almost every religious tradition recognizes that fasting is a key to heightened spiritual awareness. You know this from your own experience. When you are engaged in a hobby, painting a room, keeping vigil near a delivery room, or standing watch at a sickbed, you may simply forget to eat. What you are doing so fills you that the intensity of the action is itself nourishing. In fasting from food, or drink, or habitual behaviors, you make room for what is truly important. Even though Lenten Sundays stand apart from the Lenten fast, you will notice traces of fasting in our liturgy. We fast from singing the Gloria and Alleluia, we fast from flowers bedecking the altar, and there may be a noticeable drop in the number of infant baptisms as parents elect to wait until Easter. This hints that fasting is a prelude to feasting, and the vigor of our Easter alleluias is rich fare after a long silence. In the same way, even a small fast—no cream in the coffee, no pepper in the soup, no radio in the car—can not only point to deeper hungers, but help us rejoice more fully in the feast when we break our fast together. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WHERE GOD IS: We cannot go where God is not. And where God is, all is well. —Anonymous TESTED LIKE GOLD: God wishes to test you like gold in the furnace. The dross is consumed by the fire, but the pure gold remains and its value increases. —St. Jerome Emiliani

FASTING: All healthy persons from the ages of 14 to 59 should decrease their food intake to 2 very light intakes and 1 light meal from Ash Wednesday to Easter.

ABSTINENCE: On Ash Wednesday and All the Fridays of lent people should not eat meat.
