Say Hello to the New Executive Committee (EC)!!
The team has become a lot bigger over this year, because of the recruitment of the first year HR Students. The changes in positions and additions of new teammates will only guarantee greater service delivery.
Also, it is with sad tidings that we bid farewell to our previous guardian and life-long friend to HR Tuks, Sakkie van Greuning. However, this position will now be managed by Mrs Prishanta Pillay, the first-year english bdo lecturer, with whom we are looking forward to working.

The Fun Stuff…
Open Day:
A day where doe-eyed, hopeful, and
ambitious freshmen were trying to find
their place, HR Tuks was ever-present
and ever-vigilante, ensuring that all the
potential UP graduates present on the
day would fit right in and feel at home
in this strange, new environment.
However, this was not just an HR Tuks
occasion. The Commercii EMS faculty
house, along with all other BCom sub-
houses, were also present to assist
any and all students interested in
finding out more about UP life.
The day was quite splendid. So much
so, in fact, that the next Open Day
(24th of May) is one where HR Tuks is
looking forward to enticing young
matric minds with the prospects of
being a student (and Hopeful
graduate) in the exciting field of
Human Resource Management.

An HR Tuks Valentine’s Day:
Even in matters of the heart, HR Tuks
seeks to be as involved as possible in
adding a dash of Human Relations
magic to any occasion.
In fulfilling this mission, HR Tuks sold
Valentine’s Day-themed cupcakes,
pink lemonade, as well as the amazing
photographs pictured here.
The smiles of the individuals pictured
in each photograph speak volumes of
how fun and memorable an HR Tuks
Valentine’s Day can be.

The Academic Stuff…
SADC Seminar
When one hears of labour relations,
the first thing that comes to mind is
‘strikes’, as was alluded to by Prof.
Cheryl de la Rey (Vice-chancellor and
Principal) when welcoming the guests
to the seminar. She also mentioned
that we should start thinking more
broadly about the concepts behind
labour relations, and stressed the need
for collaborations with the Centre of
Human Rights (Faculty of Law), which
was founded in 1986, and the Centre
for Governance Innovation, which was
founded last year.
Labour relations and human rights go
hand-in-hand, as was emphasized by
Dr. Paul Smit (facilitator of the
seminar and the primary person
heading research for the transnational
labour relations in the SADC region)
The Purpose of the seminar was to
contrast the European Union (EU) with
the SADC region in terms of
transnational labour law and industrial
relations.
To provide background knowledge of
the European Union experience, Prof.
Manfred Weiss of Goethe Universität
gave great insight into the content of
the frameworks of the EU, the charter
of the EU, as well as how an EU policy
can be implemented in the SADC
region, provided the goals established
are realistic. Also, social dialogue is
crucial to the successful
implementation of an EU policy in the
SADC region.
Overall, the Seminar was a great
success.

Seminar on ‘The Relevance of HR in the Success of an Organisation’
This seminar will provide experience and insight from Prof. S. Nkomo with regard to the real-world purpose and relevance of Human Resource Management. From this, students studying HR, as well as those interested in learning more about the HR field, will come to understand the value of having HR practitioners within any organisation.
So don’t miss out!

Outreach: Help Developing Young Minds
Do you feel the need to become more involved in your community? Do you enjoy interacting with school children, and are willing to do more by enriching the lives of South African youths? Then, Commercii and HR Tuks have something for you.
Joopie Fourie Primary School is requesting that 32 university students help to tutor and mentor their primary school students for the whole year. This will require great passion and commitment, but the outcome will be more than worth it. (You even get to put it on your CV!)

HR Tuks is the academic sub-house for the Department of Human Resource Management. As a sub-house, this organization acts under the overarching leadership of Commercii, the house representing the EMS faculty.
