Session Overview
Emerging Trends in Drugs and Alcohol: What Clinicians Need to Know to be “in the know” The underlying themes of addiction are a constant but the mechanisms by which substance use and abuse take place are an ever-evolving landscape. Clinicians and those who work with the public need to have an understanding of these emerging trends as they relate to drugs and alcohol. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Articulate an understanding of the trends that have lead to the increase of heroin and other opioid substances
2. Discuss the cultural and political changes as they relate to drug possession and usage
3. Demonstrate an appreciation for how adolescents are vulnerable to early onset drug and alcohol use
4. Describe current trends in drug and alcohol usage in this geographical area
Bullies, Mean Girls and Other School Yard Villains Bullying is not a new phenomenon: children and teens have been targets of this type of aggression for many decades. What is new ground are the methods by which the aggression is employed and our knowledge of the repercussions of being involved in bullying. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Articulate an understanding of what constitutes bullying and who the significate players are
2. Demonstrate an appreciation for the mental health implications for the perpetrators of the aggression as well as the victims and by-standers
3. Describe appropriate interventions for those involved in bullying behavior
4. Discuss the complicated political and macro systems that make large-scale intervention difficult
