Hayward Promise Neighborhood Resident Spotlight: Sonnye Brotherton

Empowering Middle School Students to be Leaders

La Familia Counseling Service joined Hayward Promise Neighborhood in 2014 to

provide their “Hijos Del Sol “program to Hayward Promise Neighborhood students at

Cesar Chavez and Winton middle schools . “Hijos Del Sol” is a 10-week youth

leadership development program that utilizes skill-building activities to raise

awareness of self, family and community. Although the program is open to all

students, principals and teachers refer students to the program who they feel need

extra support. As a majority of “Hijos Del Sol” youth are students of color who may not

have a history of completing high school let alone pursuing a post-secondary college

education, the program provides an opportunity to create consciousness and social

awareness as youth of color. The training and model of peer-to-peer is focused on

offering the “Hijos Del Sol” youth an opportunity to become positive role models

through service learning, an intervention that helps high-need youth to become

successful students and productive citizens. For more information on “Hijos Del Sol,”

contact La Familia Youth Educators Denize Sanchez at: (510) 300-3134 or

[email protected] or you may also contact Rigoberto Mendoza at:

(510) 589-3648 and [email protected] .

Sonnye (2nd from left) in the State Capital building with

Hayward Promise Neighborhood staff speaking with

legislators about the importance of Promise

Neighborhoods.

Sonnye Brotherton, single mother of an eight-year-old son,

found herself struggling with how to support him as he was

being frequently suspended from his school, Harder Elementary

School. Her son’s father had recently left the home, and as a

result , her son began acting out. Unsure of what to do, Sonnye

shared her frustration with Harder’s Parent Liaison Claudia

Cartagena . Claudia referred Sonnye to Hayward Promise

Neighborhood's “Parent Project® Jr. , Loving Solutions” class,

which covers topics such as parent influence verses control,

redirecting negative choices, and improving school

performance. Soon after completing “Loving Solutions,” Sonnye

continued on to Hayward Promise Neighborhood’s Project 2

Inspire class , a parent leadership training educating parents

how to understand the school system and effectively

communicate with administration.

“Without the support of these Hayward Promise Neighborhood programs, I would not have a voice. I didn’t know how to help

my son with the disciplinary issues he faced at school because I didn’t know how to navigate the school systems. Now, I’m

informed and empowered to advocate for my son,” shared Sonnye. She credits both of these programs with teaching her how

to be consistent with disciplining her son, how to develop a positive relationship with the administrators at her son’s school

and how to determine the appropriate school staff to speak with depending on the issue she is experiencing.

Sonnye has now emerged has a leader in her community — she was selected by the San Francisco Foundation as a Koshland

Fellow, a group of 12 community leaders in Hayward’s Jackson Triangle and Harder/Tennyson neighborhoods leading a five-

year effort to improve the quality of life for people living in the community and to support the growth and leadership of

neighborhood residents with $300,000 in funding from the San Francisco Foundation.

y Tennyson. Los especialistas en

Prevención de Deserción escolar

Antonious Dean (Hayward High) y
