1 Understanding Management Pack

This chapter introduces you to the concepts of HP Storage Management Pack. The HP StorageManagement Pack is designed to receive alerts and events from the HP Storage portfolio to the HPStorage Management Pack for System Center software. It enables you to monitor and administer theHP Storage devices.

New Features in Version 2.0The HP Storage Management Pack for System Center version 2.0 includes the following features:

• Supports Diagram View of an E5000 Messaging System with single chassis component.• Supports Diagram View of a P4000 System.• Supports SAN/iQ versions 9.0 and 9.5 for a P4000 SAN Solution.• Supports all events and alerts generated by X5000 System.• Supports all events and alerts generated by HP 3PAR Storage Systems.• Introduces changes in the naming convention of the various product families.

Selecting an Event Delivery MethodTable 1 lists storage environments and associated event delivery methods.

Using Event Flow ModelHP Storage Management Pack integrates multiple types of data collection to enable complete coverageof all HP Storage products. Table 1 lists the data collection options and the corresponding producttypes.

You can use the following methods to deliver data to System Center:

• WEBES• SNMP• WMI

NOTE:Before you install the software, you must plan the deployment. Depending on the types of storageproducts you are using, you must identify the locations where you want to install and run the variousmanagement components.

Using WEBESIn the WEBES Event Flow model, you need two to four systems to configure events to flow from theStorage Device Manager (HP Command View) to System Center. The following figure shows theWEBES Event Flow model:

Figure 1 WEBES Event Flow Model.

Understanding Management Pack10

Page 11: HP Storage Management Pack for System Center User Guideh20628.Management Pack is designed to receive alerts and events from the HP Storage portfolio to the HP Storage Management Pack

NOTE:WEBES and the WEBES Listener (on a WEBES Collection Point) cannot simultaneously run on thesame system. However, all other permutations, including configuration of the System CenterManagement Server as a WEBES Collection Point, are supported. For more information related to WEBES, see Chapter 2.

Using SNMPIn the SNMP Event Flow model, you need one to three systems to configure events to flow from theStorage Device Manager (Command View Tape Library software or equivalent) to System Center. These functions can run on the System Center Management Server, or can be distributed as requiredthroughout your environment. Figure 2 shows the SNMP Event Flow model for devices using XP, VA,P2000/MSA, Tape Storage, P4000, or HP 3PAR Storage system .

For more information related to SNMP, see Chapter 2.

Figure 2 Event Flow for devices using XP, VA, P2000/MSA, Tape Storage, P4000, or HP 3PAR StorageSystem.

NOTE:When using SNMP collection points, the HP Storage Management Pack should be installed on collectionpoint server where the OpsMgr agent is deployed.

Using WMIIn the WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) event flow model, for configuring events to flowfrom the device to System Center, the device must be discovered from OpsMgr and the agent mustbe installed on E5000 Messaging System/X5000 System.

At a given time, you can work with only one blade server in an E5000 System/X5000 System.Discovering more than one blade servers within an E5000 System/X5000 System may result induplicate events being reported by the System Center. If the blade server fails, the administrator needs

to discover another E5000/X5000 blade server. The E5000 Messaging System/X5000 System mustbe in a healthy state in the operations console to enable monitoring.

For more information related to WMI, see Chapter 2.

The following figure shows the WMI Event Flow model:

WEBES Events

Monitoring WEBESWhen WEBES monitors a EVA, it analyzes the EVA event flow and issues notification messages whenrequired. Typically, the messages are sent to a Local Administrator Group responsible for theoperational status of the EVA. If desired, WEBES can be linked in to ISEE to send messages relatedto component failures directly to HP for replacement action, diagnosis, or both. WEBES can also sendinformation to several supported management applications, such as the HP Systems Insight Manager(HP SIM).

Generating WEBES Test EventsTo generate WEBES test events on a system running WEBES, complete the following steps:

1. Verify that an evt file named similar to eva_events.evt is located in:

• ~\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\svctools\common\ca\examples directory for a 32-bitoperating system

• ~\Program Files(x86)\Hewlett-Packard\svctools\common\ca\examples directory for a 64-bit operating system

In WEBES 5.5 or later versions, that are installed through RSS\RSA, the evt file is located in:

• ~\Program Files\HP\svctools\common\ca\examples directory for a 32-bit operating system• ~\Program Files (x86)\HP\svctools\common\ca\examples directory for a 64-bit operating

system2. Enter the following test command for a 32-bit operating system :

~\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\svctools\common\bin> wsea n analyze input <Path ofeva_events.evt >\eva_events.evt not vis

Or enter the following test command on 64-bit operating system:

~\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard\svctools\common\bin>wsea n analyze input <Path ofeva_events.evt >\eva_events.evt not vis

In WEBES 5.5 or later versions, that are installed through RSS\RSA, enter the following testcommand on 32-bit operating System:

~\Program Files\HP\svctools\common\bin> wsea n analyze input <Path of eva_events.evt>\eva_events.evt not vis

Or enter the following test command on 64-bit operating system:

~\Program Files (x86)\HP\svctools\common\bin>wsea n analyze input <Path of eva_events.evt>\eva_events.evt not vis

This will generate several test events, depending on the version of WEBES you are using.

Page 54: HP Storage Management Pack for System Center User Guideh20628.Management Pack is designed to receive alerts and events from the HP Storage portfolio to the HP Storage Management Pack

NOTE:If the test messages do not appear on the OpsMgr 2007 console, then in the system where WEBESlistener service is installed, look for WEBESListenerLog.log file in the ~\Program Files\HP\HPEnterprise Storage for a 32-bit operating system, and ~\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP EnterpriseStorage for a 64-bit operating system. To verify the communication path from the WEBES throughthe WEBES Listener to the OpsMgr 2007 in your environment, see Troubleshooting.

Viewing Events Using WindowsTo view events in Microsoft Windows, complete the following steps:

1. Do one of the following:

• For a 32–bit operating system:Go to Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer, and find WEBESEventListener,as shown in Figure 24.

• For a 64–bit operating system:Go to Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer, and find WEBESEventListen-er, as shown in Figure 24.

Figure 24 Event Viewer.

Configuration for monitoring device54

Page 55: HP Storage Management Pack for System Center User Guideh20628.Management Pack is designed to receive alerts and events from the HP Storage portfolio to the HP Storage Management Pack

2. Double-click WEBESEventListener. The Event Properties window appears, as shown in Figure 25.

Figure 25 Event Viewer properties.

Interpreting WEBES MessagesWEBES Messages enable you to do the following:

• Triggers an event on any component failure and sends it to HP, if linked to ISEE.• EVA event flow allows distinction between component failure and component removal for most of

its components. For example, the physical removal of a disk drive or power supply is significantlydifferent from a drive or power supply failure.

• Looks for patterns, combinations, and variations in the event stream. It analyzes the event streamand looks at the context of each event within the stream. Conditions around a specific event inthe event stream can significantly change the context of that event. WEBES may indicate normalexpected behavior in one case and a clear component failure in another.

• Displays a Consequence message prior to the actual failure or environmental message. This isbecause of time-out conditions, but this must not occur frequently or with excessive time differences.

• Reports a component failure once during a predetermined time period (usually 24 hours, unlessa successful repair is detected). When a failed drive is replaced, it is considered a new component(even if inserted in the same location), because it has a different unique identifier. As a result, there is no silence period for the replaced drives.

NOTE:Informational, Environmental and Consequence messages can be distinguished from Failure messagesby the letters CUST: in the short description of the message.

Page 56: HP Storage Management Pack for System Center User Guideh20628.Management Pack is designed to receive alerts and events from the HP Storage portfolio to the HP Storage Management Pack

Table 4 lists the categories of WEBES messages.

Table 4 WEBES Messages

DescriptionMessages

These messages occur as part of normal behavior of the EVA, such as when a cloningoperation completes, when a controller successfully boots, and so on.

Informationalmessages

No immediate action is needed, but you may need to monitor some processes whenthese status changes occur.Suggested response

These messages are triggered by abnormal situations outside the control of EVA. Thisincludes when a disk group becomes low on free space, when a temperature sensorapproaches critical, when AC input power fails, when the cache battery power is low, when a controller host port goes offline, when changes in the CA status occur whena component is removed, and so on.

Environmentalmessages

The local EVA administrator group must take appropriate actions in response to thesemessages, because they can affect the operational status of the EVA, if left unresolved. The EVA hardware is not the cause of these messages; the issue is elsewhere in theenvironment.

Suggested response

These messages identify a EVA component which has either failed, become degraded,or is otherwise exhibiting abnormal behavior and must be replaced. These messagescan occur when a disk drive exceeds error thresholds, becomes degraded or fails, when a power supply fails, when a blower assembly becomes degraded, and so on.

Simple Failuremessage

If WEBES is linked to ISEE, RSS, or RSA, this message is sent directly to HP to arrangecomponent replacement. The Local Administrator Group receives a copy of thismessage. If WEBES is not linked to ISEE, RSS, or RSA, the administrator must contactHP for assistance. All failure messages are linked to the HP Customer Self Repairprogram.

Suggested response

These messages occur when WEBES detects an abnormality in the EVA, which maybe caused by a hardware failure or firmware issue, and the cause of the failure cannotbe immediately identified. These messages may occur when a server-side Fibre Channelloop fails, when a controller does an abnormal termination, and so on.

Complex Failuremessages

If WEBES is linked to ISEE, RSS, or RSA, this message is sent directly to HP for furtherdiagnosis. In this situation, a HP support engineer needs to investigate the EVA logsto determine the root cause and replace any defective components. If the EVA Eventlog collection is enabled (WEBES 6.1 or later), then WEBES also mails these logsdirectly to HP, avoiding a call-back delay to collect them (details follow on next page). The Local Administrator Group receives a copy of this message. If WEBES is not linkedto ISEE, RSS, or RSA, the administrator must contact HP for assistance.

Suggested response

These messages report EVA state changes as a consequence of a Simple Failure, aComplex Failure, or an Environmental message. These messages can occur when avirtual disk goes offline, when a disk group becomes degraded, and so on.

Consequencemessages

The Local Administrator Group receives these messages as informational messages,to scope the impact of the failure on their operational environment. Even if WEBES islinked to ISEE, RSS, or RSA, these messages are not sent to HP if the message is aconsequence of the Simple or Complex Failure message. Information from the Simpleor Complex Failure is sent to HP, instead.

A3. The HP Storage Management Pack for System Center only generates alerts in OpsMgr 2007 forcritical and warning states. Check the events view for a complete list and events.

TroubleshootingQ1. I am using the WEBES XML interface. The first time I ran the desta mom on command, it did notprompt me for the host name and port number. What do I do?

A1. If you are not prompted for the host name and port information, run the command again (notethat you may need to run desta mom off first, depending on the version of WEBES you are using). Then, re-run the command.

For more information regarding this process, see Configuring WEBES to send an XML event callout.

Q2. The WEBES configuration desta mom on defaulted to port 2069 instead of 8945. What do Ido?

A2. The port number needs to be the same in both the WEBES desta mom configuration and theOpsMgr 2007 Management Pack configuration. Configuring WEBES to send an XML event calloutcontains instructions for changing the port you are using; be sure both of the configurations are usingthe same port.

Q3. The systems running WEBES Event Listener when discovered are not getting displayed in theView Discovered Inventory pane.

A7. Before installing the Storage Management Pack in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for a 64-bitoperating system, you must install a Microsoft Hotfix 942589 from Microsoft download site.

http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=942589&kbln=en-us

Q8. I am not able to see anything after creating the View with target as SNMP Trap Catcher Discovery.

A8. Check if the SNMP Trap Catcher rule in the authoring pane is disabled. If it is disabled, enablethe rule.

Q9. I have created the view with Object as SNMP Trap Catcher Discovery in the OpsMgr console.I could see some Events\Alerts from the monitoring device but not in readable format.

A9. If you are using the Microsoft Windows Server 2003, open the command prompt and navigateto this folder: ../windows/system32/wbem/snmp.

If you are using Microsoft Windows Server 2008, open the command prompt and navigate to thisfolder:../windows/SysWOW64/wbem/snmp.

Run the command smi2smir/l to get a list of .mib files registered in WMI. If you are not able tofind .mib files registered, reinstall the HP Storage Management Pack and also check if the installedmanagement pack kit supports the installed version of the Windows operating system.

Q10. I have installed and imported the management pack. I am Getting SNMP alerts but I am gettinga lot of Alerts from Agent computers about the WMI failure. After importing the management pack,I am getting Alerts from multiple Agent computers about the WMI failure.

A10. A simple fix is to Override the “HP Storage Trap Catcher" Rule in the Operations Managerconsole for a group (a user-defined group) you have created which includes the systems you areexplicitly trying to monitor. Note that these are the systems you have configured to receive the trapsfrom the storage devices and device management software, not necessarily the storage devices orsystems running the device management software.

From management pack version 1.5.3 we have disabled the rule completely. This is done so that theissue does not occur due to non availability of WMI SNMP provider installation on the discoveredmachines. The rule has to be enabled for required groups.

Q11. I am using HP Storage Works Management Pack v1.8 for Monitoring EVA alerts. Events sentfrom the WEBES are not reaching the OpsMgr server.

A11. There is a known compatibility issue with WEBES v5.4, ISEE v5, and the WEBESListener v1.2.WEBES v5.5 resolves this issue.

Q12. I am using HP Storage Management Pack for Monitoring EVA alerts. Events sent from WEBESdoes not reach OpsMgr and the WebesListenerlog.log file grows very large.

A12. We have released a customer advisory on this issue. You can download this from the followingwebsite: http://saw.cce.hp.com/km/saw/view.do?docId=emr_na-c01581401.

Q13. On the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64 platform, while uninstalling HP StorageWorksManagement Pack v1.6.0 or earlier, the MIBs are not unregistered during uninstallation. Theunregistration of the MIBs does not cause any system issue.

A13. To uninstall the MIBs manually, perform the following tasks:

• Launch the command prompt with elevated administrative privileges ("Run as administrator")• Go to the installation folder and run the following command:

cmd smi2smir /d mib_name
