Elevator pitch

Small and medium business (SMB) companies today are looking for affordable storage designed for their small IT budgets but nevertheless don`t exclude them from technical substantial progress. Furthermore it must be easy to manage - ideally aligned with their Proliant server environment – so that such a system can also be used in remote offices. The new MSA 2040 storage system is ideally suited for an easy handling, a new performance boost which is a perfect bridge to future technologies and on top of that comes with a very competitive price. HP MSA 2040 storage scales up to 199 SFF disk drives and delivers the data over very fast lanes until 16Gb FC. Newly supporting SSD technology, the system is designed to meet the fluctuating needs of virtualized environments.

HP MSA 2040 storage systems provide options to fit any infrastructure and any budget. Enterprise-class storage functionality and leading virtualization software integration (VAAI, VASA) are built-in, making HP MSA 2040 the ideal platform for supporting virtualization growth at all stages.

The opportunity

HP MSA 2040 storage delivers a simple, flexible and affordable storage solution – now in the 4th generation - that meets virtual data center needs with integrated high performance features like: 4GB Cache, SSD support, 512 snaps, remote snaps and non-disruptive data-in-place Upgrades (see appendix 3). The HP MSA 2040 storage portfolio is aimed at SMB and ROBO customers who like to integrate an easy storage management within their HP Proliant or blade system management.

Business environment

Customer’s infrastructure is typically:

Proliant servers and small storage capacity

Or already MSA storage until 3rd generation

Unable to meet the requirements of storage performance and growth

Strained by budget cuts which makes hardware changes almost impossible

The optimal storage solution for SMB customers should provide simplified management, more performance for their virtualization and

consolidation demands, reliable SAN storage, and flexible upgrade options to maximize their IT investments. The storage solution needs to be

designed in such a way that they make it possible to bridge to future technologies. To overcome the challenges that customers are facing, HP MSA 2040 storage is the optimized performance storage solution which can grow with customer needs but is just as well to manage as their established systems.

Qualifying/discovery questions

These questions are intentionally open-ended and will help to understand the customer’s true issues. You can then determine how our portfolio offers the right solution for them.

• Are your servers virtualized? If so, what percent of your environment?

• What is your rate of growth?

• What are your performance requirements?

• Do you have growing capacity needs this year?

• Do you work with remote offices?

• Do you have a need for better performance for any of their applications?

• What kind of server infrastructure does your MSA support? (physical / virtual)

• How can I help you consolidating your storage?

• Has your support contract expired or will it be soon?

What do I sell?

Positioning details against IBM

IBMs competitive storage arrays are: DS3500 or V3700: but

DS3500 is an Engenio OEM product which was acquired by NetApp: so a dead-end product?

HP MSA2040 delivers 2 to 4X higher performance than either of the IBMs offerings. MSA P2000 G3 is still very competitive with either IBM offering on performance or price. HP’s 4 generations of ‚data –in-place‛ upgrades providing unmatched investment protection. DS3500 has questionable roadmap.

What are the customer benefits with HP storage?

HP’s Entry SAN strategy is steady and predictable – dead ends waste money

Deploy P2000 G3 in tight budget situations. Proven performance, proven reliability, unmatched upgradability story

Lead with the new MSA 2040 for disruptive performance leveraging the latest host interfaces and SSD support.

Which main technical issues will the customer have with IBM?

IBM entry SAN presents two incompatible systems: DS3500 and v3700 (only forklift upgrades possible)

Only 64 snaps possible on V3700 (32 on DS3500) 512 snaps on MSA 2040

Only battery backed cache battery free cache

Cost for Cache upgrade to 2GB incl. up to 4GB

No roadmap to fast connections Connections up to 16Gb (FC), 6Gb for SAS etc.

Positioning details against EMC

MSA family delivers flexibility vs. rigid architecture choices with EMC’s low-end strategy. MSA delivers Entry SAN across all 3 host protocols. MSA does not compromise SAN performance to support NAS file sharing. MSA P2000 G3 can compete on easily on SAN specs and iSCSI connectivity vs VNXe. MSA 2040 performance will equate to incredible value vs. the VNX 5100. There is no upgrade path between VNXe and VNX. Pick wrong and customers are stranded.

Positioning details against Dell Powervault (PV) and MD3

Customers investing in Dell storage need to carefully question lifecycle expectations. Dell’s low-end strategy has had numerous ‚shifts‛ in recent years. Shifts leave customers stranded. Was EMC, then switched to Engenio, now NetApp owns Engenio. What is the future for PV? New high density MD3 platform is yet another shift. Does Dell ‚going private‛ play into Storage engineering investments? Multiple strategy shifts and corporate ‚going private‛ implication should raise concerns.

HP’s entry SAN strategy has been consistent. Newest HP MSA2040 delivers 2 to 4X higher performance over the PV32/36 offering. MSA P2000 is very competitive vs. PV on performance or price. HP’s 4 generations of ‚data –in-place‛ upgrades providing unmatched investment protection.

MD3 is a density and archive play. Performance does not appear to be a primary design requirement. Entry configurations are not granular.

Overcoming objections

Competitive objections

NetApp

NetApp has a unified NAS and SAN solution

- Why is a unified solution important to you?

- Do you have any concerns around a single system handling all of your data?

- How do you expect your file and block data to grow over time? Responses:

A NAS array force fitted with block features. In an entry environment it is better to have a low cost but high performance array

which can do both. With the new MSA 2040 you can extend your storage capacity up to 199 disks to match all your needs.

Page 12: HP MSA 2040 Storage

Sales guide | HP MSA 2040 Storage

NetApp can do deduplication

- How much storage would you need to have in your NetApp filer to do a full restore from disk or tape?

- Can you afford the performance degradation caused by dedupe?

- Do you have the budget for the upfront capacity required by NetApp? Responses:

Deduplication and compression degrades performance and changes the original data; NetApp has a post-process deduplication which takes place after the data is stored. Because you need to buy sufficient capacity to store the data first, how much do you really save? Dedupe saves capacity but at the expense of performance. Just because you have the additional capacity doesn’t mean that you have the additional IOPS to handle additional workload.

And plus you need all the space there if you are ever going to do a full restore. So NetApp´s dedupe process can cause inconsistent data during re-deduplication. Thus: many customers have switched that off.

NetApp has a better management

- What makes you believe that? What applications are tied to it?

- What are your thoughts on ‘a la carte pricing’ for management tools?

- Do you like a management ‚all-in-one‛ for server and storage?

- Good management tools show the actual useable capacity. Have you seen that for NetApp filers after a few months of operation?

Responses:

All storage management capabilities are included with the HP MSA 2040, even for snaps and clones. Moreover you get a management for both your ProLiant servers and your storage. We don’t charge for ‚a la carte‛ capabilities like other providers; you get everything for one price. There are no budgeting surprises that may cost you more in the future.

Even in virtualized environments like VMware HP supports VASA (vStorage APIs for Storage Awareness) to manage the storage of MSA 2040 within the server environment.

So customers are at any time informed about the status of their systems, their usage of capacity and the health of the total infrastructure.

EMC

EMC has a unified NAS and SAN solution with VNX

- Why is a unified solution important to you?

- Do you have any concerns around a single system handling all of your data?

- How do you expect your file and block data to grow over time? Responses:

The VNX series is not a true unified solution. It is a combined array of two older platforms (Clariion / Celerra) under the same cover– does a new GUI make it ‚new‛? You can create a LUN only for file- or for block – services, not for both. In an entry environment it is better to have a low cost but high performance array which can do both.

EMC has a better data organization on their disk

- What do you mean with better organization?

- Do you like data compression or dedupe on your online data during your operating time?

- Do you have the budget for the upfront capacity required by EMC? Responses:

Deduplication and compression degrades performance and changes the original data; EMC has a post-process deduplication which takes place after the data is stored.

So EMC´s dedupe process can cause inconsistent data during re-deduplication. Thus: many customers have switched that off.

EMC has offered a very low cost VNXe

- What do you mean with ‚low cost‛, does it reflect the price/performance ratio?

- How can you scale with this system?

Page 13: HP MSA 2040 Storage

Sales guide | HP MSA 2040 Storage

13 HP Restricted. For HP and Channel Partner internal use only.

Responses:

This system is the entry point to the VNX family and cannot be upgraded to any higher level. So you have to think about your needs today and tomorrow. It is a price breaker but do you have all functionality inside which comes with the new MSA 2040? MSA 2040 has a common management concept with the servers – VNX? MSA 2040 comes with high-end connections of FC or even the SAS throughput – VNX? MSA 2040 can extend storage capacity up to 199 disks – VNX? So please compare apples with apples.

DELL

Dell PowerVault offers better price

- How have you determined that?

- Have you done an apples-to-apples comparison to our new MSA 2040?

- What if I can show you a competitively priced solution with greater performance? Responses:

Customers investing in Dell storage need to carefully question lifecycle expectations. Dell’s low-end strategy has had numerous ‚shifts‛ in recent years. Shifts leave customers stranded. Was EMC, then switched to Engenio, now NetApp owns Engenio. What is the future for PowerVault? New high density MD3 platform is yet another shift. Does Dell ‚going private‛ play into Storage engineering investments? Multiple strategy shifts and corporate ‚going private‛ implication should raise concerns.

HP’s entry SAN strategy has been consistent. Newest HP MSA2040 delivers 2 to 4X higher performance over the PowerVault 32/36 offering. MSA P2000 is very competitive vs. PowerVault on performance or price. HP’s 4 generations of ‚data –in-place‛ upgrades providing unmatched investment protection.

IBM

I trust in IBMs investment protection

- How have you determined that?

- Do you know about the story of DS3500 storage? Responses:

DS3500 is an Engenio OEM product which was acquired by NetApp: so the roadmap into the future is questionable; maybe that the DS3500 is a dead-end product? Furthermore there is only a forklift upgrade possible to the V3700. HP MSA2040 delivers 2 to 4X higher performance than either of the IBMs offerings. MSA P2000 G3 is still very competitive with either IBM offering on performance or price. HP’s 4 generations of ‚data –in-place‛ upgrades providing unmatched investment protection.

Customer objections

1. “We have some availability and reliability requirements.”

- What are your specific requirements?

- How have you been challenged to meet these in the past?

- What other requirements do you have for data storage? Responses:

First of all we have to tell the customer the quality of hard- and software which comes with the new MSA2040; customers trust this quality and reliability in the past 5 years with more than 170.000 deliveries. Next we can create a scenario for high availability with dual pathing through the SAN network, the definition of clones, the creation of intermediate snapshots until to the point of to offer the next higher level of storage within HP storage portfolio. Don’t leave this discussion to the competition, emphasize our services capabilities.

2. I’ve been using direct attached storage on 5 different servers: how can you help me?

- Seems like something is always needing my attention.

- Consolidation seems like it would help

Page 14: HP MSA 2040 Storage

Responses:

The new MSA2040 is ideally suited for entry level consolidation. The Target: Server refresh is typically driven by consolidation and/or virtualization initiatives. Smaller environments will often be moving from DAS to an entry SAN. SAN features are required for HA and DR. HP offers with cheap SAN components of Qlogic a good entrance for consolidation of entry IT infrastructures.

What it means to the customer: Lowest cost shared storage with the SAN HA/DR features to make it work. Scalable enough to grow with you. HP Gen8 servers and MSA – Better Together.

3. I just started using VMware and I need plug-n-play compatibility

- What are your specific requirements?

- How have you been challenged to meet these in the past?

- What other requirements do you have for data storage? Responses:

The new MSA 2040 is especially designed for usage within virtual environments, for example it is certified from VMware for VAAI and VASA for plug-n-play compatibility. With this you can manage a virtual environment from on point! Furthermore the high performance features of the HP MA2040 increases the throughput from storage to the virtual machines and vice versa so that can observe fast access at every time. You can even increase this performance by using SSD’s: Leverage SSDs to optimize your performance and boost your application response.

(also Backup, DR and Business Continuance need to be addressed in VM context!!)

4. I have always problems with my battery in the RAID system

- Every three years I have to replace a battery in my old array.

- Last time it took me a bunch of calls and a month to get a replacement Responses:

Those problems are gone with the new HP MSA2040. We now use battery-free Caches, i.e. flash cards. 5. Which solution do you have for my remote offices?

- Storage solution must be cost effective – Savings here are multiplied by X sites

- ROBO Solutions (Compute, Network, Storage) – Again multiplied by X sites

- Centralizing control, facilitating simple day-to-day remote office interactions Responses:

Here it must be pointed out HP’s ability to provide a complete solution end to end. The power of HP’s Converged Infrastructure extends from the data-center to the remote office: it includes full integration, common support infrastructure, testing, compatibility – One Brand – ONE HP. Work with success stories: MSA has hundreds of ROBO success stories. From world-wide retail organizations with >1000 sites to small local pizza shops operating across a single city or state.

Data-in-place Upgrades to MSA 2040

It is important for a good investment protection that migrations between older and new storage systems are as easy as possible. The MSA storage family is an excellent example for this. But there are some recommendations for execution because the new MSA 2040 storage system operates with higher performance controllers / networks / HDDs than the MSA P2000 G3. Therefore it does not make any sense to take over slower operating HDDs etc. So the first point is:

- The HP MSA 2040 Array Enclosure is the recommended chassis over the P2000 G3 MSA Array enclosure

as the HP MSA 2040 array Enclosure hardware design allows for the full performance of the HP MSA 2040 controllers and adds support for SSDs.

- Pay close attention to the matrix of supported HDDs in HP MSA 2040 Quick Specs (for example no SATA HDD in the MSA 2040)

The HP MSA 2040, like the P2000 G3 MSA, supports “moving between topologies” by a controller replacement. For instance, if your P2000 G3 iSCSI MSA has reached its host connect or performance maximums, it can be upgraded to a HP MSA 2040 Fibre Channel model. The HP MSA 2040 products can adapt to new infrastructures while keeping the virtual disk data in place by doing a hardware controller replacement to match the infrastructure needed. Note: Any iSCSI or SAS

volume mappings (LUNs) will be deleted during the upgrade and will need to be remapped to Fibre Channel hosts.

Some Upgrade considerations:

Before upgrading to the HP MSA 2040, you will need to copy data from any existing SATA Virtual Disks to SAS Virtual Disks as SATA drives are NOT supported with the HP MSA 2040 controllers.

If an HP MSA 2040 array enclosure is purchased, existing drives will only need to be removed from the P2000 G3 array enclosure and placed into the new HP MSA 2040 array enclosure in the same order as they were in the P2000 G3 array enclosure.

If an HP MSA 2040 array enclosure is purchased and there was an existing Remote Snap replication license on the P2000 G3 array enclosure, a new Remote Snap replication license will need to be obtained and applied to the upgraded

system.

If you have an existing VMware Virtual Infrastructure that utilizes the P2000 G3 MSA, consult the “VMware Virtual Infrastructure” section in the technical white paper prior to upgrading.

Allow a minimum of two hours to complete the upgrade process. Allow additional time for configurations that contain large host counts because volume-to-host mappings will need to be reconfigured.

Known limitations The following is the list of limitations that can be found with the upgrade:

Mixing versions of P2000 G3 and HP MSA 2040 controllers in the same chassis is not supported.

Mixing two different controller types (for example, FC and SAS) in the same array enclosure is not supported.

Data-in-place upgrades to MSA 2040 are only possible from MSA P2000 G3. Not from any older MSA generations. For more information please read carefully the technical white paper: Upgrading the HP P2000 G3 MSA to the HP MSA 2040 Storage
