We are delighted you are part of the wonderful Hoxton Park High School Community! We have had a great start to 2015 and are so looking forward to an exciting year of learning together. I trust all of you have had a refreshing break and ready to start the new year with purpose. The beginning of the school year is one of my favourite times there is such a great buzz around the school, staff keen to meet their students and begin classes and students excited about seeing each other and the next year of learning. We have 125 bright eyed Year 7s this year each unique and keen to find their place and make their mark. With the exiting of each graduating class of 2014 and the arrival of the Year 7s I am acutely aware of the very short and precious time the students have at our school and the importance of ensuring every moment counts. This is one of the unique aspects of an educator’s world: the regular cycle that informs the core of what we do – supporting young people to be the best they can, building a toolbox of knowledge, skills, understandings and dispositions to support learning confidence, emotional/social wellbeing and happiness at school and beyond. The beginning of secondary school marks a significant and exciting time for our incoming Year 7 students and families. Over our ‘Meet and Greet’ barbecue many of you have commented that you were pleased with your child’s transition to high school. I know you will eagerly ‘watch this space’ as your child grows and develops. At Hoxton Park High School, we support young adults to be independent thinkers, focused on learning, stretching their capacity through challenge and trying new ‘things’, whilst working hard towards their goals and dreams. We look forward to partnering with you to ensure your child is progressing from one level of learning to the next, socially connected, emotionally supported, fulfilling their potential and contributing positively to our school and the community. Hoxton Park High School has a rich tradition of both academic achievement and involvement in community beyond the classroom. We encourage students to get involved and start making a mark in their ‘Passport to Leadership’. Students can pursue their passions in music, performance, the visual arts, sport, social justice, environment, Science, Mathematics and English Competitions, debating, public speaking, chess, camps, technology, design, agriculture and Café Hoxton! There really is something for everyone. Class of 2014 We are once again delighted with our HSC results increasing our mean study score and excellent individual achievements. Congratulations to the Class of 2014. Special congratulations to our Dux Calvin Lo with an ATAR of 99.4. Calvin made the HSC State Honour Roll and came 8 th in the State for Ancient History. He has accepted a Bachelor of Combined Law at the University of New South Wales. Andy Huynh gained an ATAR of 96.7 and has accepted a Bachelor of Commerce Law at Macquarie University. Calvin and Andy like many of the Class of 2014 immersed themselves in the Hoxton Park High School experience. They were involved in learning in our classrooms and took any opportunity presented to them to succeed in achieving their personal best. We are proud of their efforts! Our students’ results exemplify their focused work which began in Year 7 and the work of our teachers who over many years have been focused on improving learning outcomes for all students. It was wonderful to see that 58% of our students received first round tertiary offers. Hoxton Park High School Learning and Relationships

This year we are continuing to focus on quality relationships built around our new vision and values. In 2015, we will continue to expand and improve learning opportunities for all our students. Teachers are working in Teams reviewing and developing the myriad of ways we engage with and challenge all learners. Their key focus is planning rich and active learning experiences in the classroom and beyond. From ‘Get Reading Right’, Lexiles, Art/Technology and multimedia events to music performances such as our popular ‘Showcase’ to competitions, to our Green Team focused on environmental action. You should have received with your school invoice our Payment Plan options. This payment process is in its second year and has undergone a number of refinements as a result of your feedback. The money directly supports the ‘Student Experience’ for every student, in every classroom with the resources and opportunities to achieve their personal best. If you have not received your letter please contact the administrative staff on 9607 4222. Our teachers, Executive and Business Administration Team look forward to a great year working with you for our children. Leny Wallace

Deputy Principal’s Report

Welcome back to another great year. We are looking forward to a tremendous year of learning at Hoxton Park High School. HSC 2014 Firstly, congratulations to Year 12, 2014 for their great HSC results, outlined in this newsletter by Mrs Wallace. The achievement we saw from this group emphasizes the reward that comes through consistent effort. These results are also a significant reward for the efforts of our committed teaching staff. Well done to all. HSC 2015 I look forward to working with our current Year 12 over this year as they run up to their HSC examinations at the end of this year. We look forward to outstanding results from these highly capable and committed students also. To the parents and families who have students undertaking their HSC this year, please support them through being aware of when assessment tasks are due and when examination periods are timetabled. If you are involved as families, you can ensure that students are focused on tasks, revision and examination preparation. It is important to remember that while the HSC is at the end of the year, school-based assessment forms 50% of the final HSC result and is accumulated over the whole year. This means that students must be working consistently and giving their best over the whole year if they are to demonstrate their skills and understanding and achieve a strong HSC result. Other ways that families can assist include supporting students with a quiet place to undertake their work and ensuring that there is a balance of school, social activities, sport and part-time work. Students need to balance their time well to ensure that they can complete all school work including revision and focus during the school day. If you have any concerns or questions about supporting your child during the HSC, please contact the Year 12 Advisor (Mr Kishore) or myself at school.

Communication We have some easy modes of communication for our community. We update our website regularly and this is a great hub for news and calendar events for our school. This is easy to find through entering Hoxton Park High School into your search engine (such as Google). Our Skoolbag app for smartphones is proving very popular and is a great way to get reminders about events, hear about our great students or check on the calendar. Simply search for Hoxton Park High School Skoolbag within the Apple app store of the Google Play Store. Our LED sign at the front of our school is also updated regularly to communicate the latest about our school. If you are waiting at the front of the school, have a look as items scroll through to learn more about our school. Open Night It was great to catch up with so many students, parents and family members at our recent Open Night. It was also great to see the work done by our student ambassadors – SRC members, Prefects, Captains and student volunteers who led visitors around the school on tours and spoke so well at the formal opening to the night. Well done to all involved. Again, it is with great pleasure that I write to you as Deputy Principal. My Year groups this year are Years 8, 10 and 12 and I am already enjoying working closely with all students and their families. I look forward to working with you all again this year and communicating the successes of our fine students throughout the year. Paul Lawrence

Mathematics Faculty Report

The Mathematics Faculty has started 2015 with a bang. We have five Year 7 classes this year, one more than last year and at the Senior end of the school we have four General Mathematics Year 12 classes, one 2 Unit class and an extension class. The Year 7 and 9 teachers have been busy preparing their classes for the NAPLAN Tests in Term 2 and all Year groups are undertaking assessment tasks, the results of which will go towards their mid-year Reports. This year also sees the introduction of the new Australian Curriculum for Years 8 and 10. (The new Australian Curriculum for Years 7 and 9 started last year.) We have made Mathletics available to our Year 7 to 10 students. This is an excellent online interactive tool that students can use at school or at home to reinforce concepts taught in the classroom. Mathletics provides engaging, graded online exercises with instant feedback for each topic in the Australian Curriculum. Students can also pit themselves against students around the world in short, intense online competitions. These competitions are very popular with students. The Australian Mathematics Competition will run later in the year. Students from Hoxton Park High School have achieved good results in the competition in past years. We encourage students, especially those who are strong in Mathematics, to apply for this competition once the entry forms become available. Mr P. Henderson Relieving Head Teacher Mathematics

HSIE Faculty Report

Firstly, I would like to welcome everyone back to the 2015 school year. It’s been a busy term already with many things happening in the HSIE Faculty. Students have settled back into routine quite well and this has been exceptionally pleasing. Already, Year 11 Ancient History students have attended the Nicholson Museum at Sydney University where they were given a tour of the museum and got to experience some hands on activities. Meanwhile, Year 10 are looking forward to an excursion later in the term, to the Jewish Museum in Sydney, where they will get to hear the stories of Holocaust survivors. Excursions and opportunities for other grades and subjects will come up throughout the year also. In HSIE, we were extremely proud of our 2014 HSC results and congratulate Calvin Lo for placing 8

th

in the State in Ancient History. This is an outstanding result which was very much deserved. Modern History, Society and Culture and Legal Studies also delivered pleasing results. Congratulations to our 2014 HSC students who did themselves proud. For this term, Mr Kingsley is on Long Service Leave. Whilst he is on leave Mrs Jones is the relieving Head Teacher Monday – Thursday and Miss Campbell is the relieving Head Teacher on Friday. Miss Campbell will also be in charge of uniform. We thank parents for their support in ensuring that their children attend each day in full school uniform. For any uniform needs, the Uniform Shop is open on Mondays from 1.00pm – 2.00pm and on Wednesdays from 8.00am – 9.00am. Any enquiries about uniform can be made directly to Miss Campbell or Mrs Jones by contacting the school on 9607 4222. Mrs Dianne Jones Relieving Head Teacher HSIE

Careers Education

Year 10 Careers Education is well underway for 2015. Students will look at a range of employment and industry information as well as goal setting, decision making, options for Senior school and post school culminating in Work Experience in Term 4. It is expected that all students will attend one week of Work Experience, where they will have the opportunity to try out a job that they are interested in. Some industries are very popular and I would recommend thinking about where you might like to go early in the year. Early in Term 2 students will be provided with the necessary documents for Work Experience so they can begin contacting workplaces of interest. Years 11 and 12 students are always welcome to come and see me if they have any questions about their study or employment options. Parents can also call or book in for an appointment. Students attending TVET need to ensure they are attending and having their attendance sheet signed every week. This sheet also needs to be presented to me each week in the Careers Office to be signed off. In the coming weeks the school website will receive some updates in the Careers Section. This will become a source of up-to-date information on a range of Careers related information. Please check it regularly for Open Day and event information. Positions vacant and other relevant emails will also be sent to students DEC email accounts. Students should be checking these regularly for information relevant to them and their future. Any student applying for work should bring their resume and/or cover letter to me for a read through before submission. These can be brought into the Careers Office on USB or emailed to me at [email protected] Ms Tracy Ryan Careers Advisor

Year 7 Advisor’s Report

A new school, new routine, new teachers and maybe even some new friends – the start of the new year as a Year 7 student can bring on the jitters and nerves, but one thing for sure is that 2015 will be filled with many exciting new experiences and opportunities for students to get involved in and around the school. One of these includes the upcoming camp, which runs from 4

th to 6

th May, Term 2. This is the Years

7 and 8’s Orientation Camp, combined with the SRC, Peer Support Leaders and Prefects. Students will travel to Forster to engage in many fun activities, including treetop rope challenges, flying fox, giant swings, mud world obstacle course, water slides and quad biking. It will be filled with many fun experiences and will provide students an opportunity to interact with their peers and teachers outside of the classroom environment. On 13

th February, the Years 7 and 11 ‘Meet and Greet’ was held. A delicious sausage sizzle was

held on the school grounds and students and their parents/guardians were able to meet with their teachers over a bite to eat. It provided a fantastic opportunity for students and their parents/guardians to meet with their teachers to discuss how students are settling into the school and to discuss their progression in the classroom. I look forward to sharing your journey through Year 7 in 2015 and I encourage each student to participate in one of the many school initiatives offered, such as Science Club, Chess Club, Dance and Drama Performances, Debating and various sporting activities. Ms R. Tandog Year 7 Advisor

Year 9 Advisor’s Report

Year 9 2015 has started off with big changes and new routines for students to get their heads around, and it also means big steps towards being Senior students at Hoxton Park High School. Firstly, students have enrolled into the two elective classes, which were chosen last year based on the combined Year 9 and 11 Subject Selection Night held last year. Students have taken towards the new freedom and choice and have been making informed and critical choices about the two elective classes, which they will partake in for Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10). Many students have sat in their classes and given new subjects a go and have decided either to stay or change classes during this ‘open-window’ period, before classes are locked in by the end of Week 5. Moreover, Grade Sport on Tuesday afternoons is now underway for all Years 9 and 10 students. Year 9 students have selected and trialed for positions in varying different sports and compete against local schools. Summer Sports this year has begun and Hoxton Park High School students are showing a great turnout. Remember that to be involved in Tuesday Grade Sport, students must be in the Sport uniform (yellow shirt) and if playing away bring $5 for transport. Lastly, Year 9 have been given an open invitation to apply for the GOALS Leadership Program, with many students taking on this great opportunity, applications are still open and can be returned to Ms Vukman. Links to Learning has also been a new venture for selected Year 9 students to be a part of, in order to gain realistic and significant connections to school and meeting curriculum needs during these later school years. Selective Year 9 students will be able to enjoy both these programs all throughout 2015. Miss C. Campbell Year 9 Advisor

Year 10 Advisor’s Report

The Year 10 students this year have started their final year as junior students and will be effectively progressing and transitioning into Stage 6 as our senior students for 2016. Our students will be working towards achieving their Record of School Achievement (RoSA), providing them with a cumulative credential of their academic results. This year will be filled with opportunities and experiences for our Year 10 students to transition into role models. One of our earliest initiatives implemented to provide our Year 10 students with opportunities is the new Careers subject that every Year 10 student undertakes throughout the year. This provides students with a range of prospects so they can increase their knowledge about career pathways, work/life roles and the world of work in general. Our Careers Advisor, Ms T. Ryan, also liaises with universities and TAFE so she can provide the best opportunities for our students. We also provided 16 of our Year 10 students with an opportunity to undertake the ‘Links to Learning’ program, which provides them with support so that these students can reach their full potential. Moreover, Year 10 has undertaken multiple extra-curricular activities within the school. A dozen of our Year 10 students have worked closely with Café Hoxton over the past year and have now become mentors for our Year 9 students. Furthermore, our mentoring doesn’t stop at Café Hoxton, as these enthusiastic students have also provided support and guidance to our Years 7 and 8 Agriculture students while working cooperatively with Mr M. Ali. Finally, students have also taken a whole school approach with the support of the TAS Faculty by working on our school’s outdoor spaces. I look forward to working with the Year 10 cohort, providing them with support and guidance wherever possible so that each and every student can reach their full potential. Mr R. Istifan Year 10 Advisor

Year 12 Advisor’s Report

The Year 12 students this year have started their final year of high school with a positive attitude and seem ready to face the challenges ahead. They all look great in their full school uniform and are great role models for the other students, especially Year 7. This is a critical year for the Year 12 students. Students should plan their time carefully so they complete their assessments by the due date. It is also important that students discuss any issues or problems they may be facing with their Year Advisor. Year 12 Jerseys have been received and are looking great. Miss Smith had to undergo a long and tedious task of designing, fitting and liaising with the students and the manufacturer. Many students have already collected their jerseys and are already wearing them. Students who have ordered jerseys and have not collected them need to pay all their school dues before collecting their jersey. This year the Year 12 students will be involved in a number of fundraising activities. We hope to raise sufficient funds to subsidise the cost of the Year Formal and the Yearbook. The Valentine’s Day flower sale was a success. We will be doing an Easter Raffle before the end of the term. I look forward to working with the Year 12 students and hope that every student will be able to achieve to the best of their ability and at the same time enjoy their final year of school. Mr B. Kishore Year 12 Advisor

Year 10 Agriculture Students Participating in Royal Easter Show Meat Bird Pairs Competition

This trial, which has been developed into a competition, is proudly sponsored by Steggles. The trial is taking place at Hoxton Farm over the next six weeks leading up to the 2015 Sydney Royal Easter Poultry Show. Our students are raising chicks from only a few days old to fully grown. In the process students will collect data and monitor each chick’s growth. They will check their temperature, food quantity, weight and keep photo evidence. It will give our students a glimpse into the modern commercial Poultry Industry. Students have the opportunity to handle poultry and dispel the myth that hormones are used in the production of chicken meat. It gives our students the opportunity to consider future employment within the Poultry Industry. This is the first time Hoxton Park High School is competing. It allows our students and school to compete on a level playing field in the pursuit of Agricultural excellence. I wish them all the best. As a consequence of this trial and participation in the Royal Easter Show, our Year 10 Agriculture students in Term 2 will be raising meat birds for commercial purposes in our newly completed spacious chicken sheds. More stories on this venture will be in our next edition of the Newsletter. Mr Mahmud Ali Head Teacher VET/TAS/Agriculture

Junior SRC Representatives

What is the Student Representative Council at Hoxton Park High School? A Student Representative Council (SRC) is a group of students in our school elected by their fellow students. They represent their peers and organise ways to improve the school environment by actively participating in school projects such as: Recycling Program, Leadership Camp, PBL Projects and many more. Our representatives are also required to contribute to our local community by organising fundraising activities. I’m pleased to announce the newly elected Junior SRC Representatives for 2015. Our representatives were presented with their badges at their Year Meetings. Mrs Jackson (SRC Assistant Coordinator) and I would like to congratulate our representatives and look forward to working with them throughout the year.

The Hoxton Park Dance Ensemble was finalised by Miss Pupovac and Miss Murray at the beginning of Term 1, 2015. The Ensemble has been rehearsing their new contemporary routine, which will be auditioned for the Sydney School Spectacular before 19

th March 2015.

The students are working hard every Wednesday after school and spending many breaks rehearsing their choreography to Indiana’s “Solo Dancing” song. There has been huge progress and everyone is working together to make the audition successful. Mrs H. Kempton Head Teacher PDHPE

NAPLAN

What is NAPLAN? The Nation Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students in these Year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. Why do students do NAPLAN tests? NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, States and territories with information about how education programs are working and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. What will be tested and how? NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. The content of each test is informed by the national Statements of Learning for English and Mathematics, which underpin State and territory learning frameworks. Questions are multiple-choice or require a short written response. The writing task requires students to write a text in response to a prompt. To give you an idea of what the tests look like, sample questions and a sample writing task are available on the NAP website: www.nap.edu.au Who will run the tests? NAPLAN tests are conducted at schools and administered by classroom teachers, school deputies or the Principal. Each State and territory is responsible for marking the tests in accordance with strict guidelines and processes. How can I help my child prepare for the tests? NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. If you have any questions about your child’s preparation for NAPLAN, you should make a time to speak with their teacher. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. The use of services by coaching providers is not recommended. What additional support can schools provide for students with special needs? All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests. Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided in the classroom. Students who have a temporary injury may also be reasonably accommodated. A formal exemption may be granted for a student with significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions, or who has recently arrived in Australia and is from a non-English speaking background.

Mt Keira Excursion

The Year 11 Biology classes went on an excursion to the beautiful Mt Keira in Wollongong. We explored the various aspects of the natural ecosystem, including abiotic and biotic factors in the sandstone plateau and the rainforest. The classes were guided and educated by the bushrangers as we took part in physical activities. Our first activity was to identify the specific trees within the area via the handbook provided in our packs. This was followed by a hike through the rainforest to identify a 200-300 year old fig tree. The bushranger handed us samples of the fruit to investigate the relationship between the wasp and the fig by using a hand held microscope. The last activity commenced within the rainforest as the students split up and set up a quadrat and took note of the abundance and distribution of the trees whilst the other half detected the components of pH, soil texture and moisture, height of the tallest tree and aspect. Albeit all the blood sucking leeches, the perfect weather and the clean fresh air made it a very memorable excursion. Anita Yahyaei and Anida Inthavong Year 11 Biology

Nicholson Museum Excursion

In the backdrop of early 20

th century sandstone buildings and through the beautifully landscaped

Quadrangle, Year 11 Ancient History students entered the doors to the Nicholson Museum and were immersed into the Ancient World through an array of artefacts, statues, mummified remains and more. As students had just begun the course, there were lots to see and learn for the first time: ancient rituals, everyday items, beliefs, curses, superstitions, imagery of deities and representations of evil for students to explore. The excursion also allowed Hoxton Park High School students a hands-on experience mimicking the work of archaeologists in analysing, explaining and creating theories about items found from ancient civilisations all around the world. In this part of the excursion, students were given unknown artefacts to view, hold, sketch, theorise and present findings to Nicholson Museum curators and then be told the true nature of these sources and explore how historians would use and interpret them in their work. Students gained a deeper and more grounded understanding of the work of historians and archaeologists as well as learning some gross facts about ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian everyday life too. Open Boys’ Soccer Knockout Competition

The Boys’ Open Knockout Soccer Competition has come to an end with a difficult 2-0 loss to Holsworthy High School at Moorebank Oval. The game was difficult for both teams as they defended well throughout the 90 minutes. We dominated a majority of the game and missed half a dozen opportunities to end the game in the first half. Our Hoxton Park High School Open Boys’ team was caught out on the counter attack twice. Holsworthy High School boys gained the upper hand after the first goal, which came in the 55

th

minute, as our boys went on an all-out attack to salvage the game. I am extremely proud of the boys, as they gave nothing less than 100% on and off the pitch. Well done boys, we’ll come back stronger next year. Mr R. Istifan Soccer Coach

A Snippet in time! Friday 27 February 2015: 11:48am

Students from several classes have come to the library to research a famous scientist and participate

in wider reading. (See Below)

Mrs Bou is explaining in depth to her students how to compete the Science research project. Students

are able to use the school WIFI to connect using their own devices. Using an iPad is a portable way to

access the schools library catalogue, local library catalogues and state library catalogues. Once

students have located the information they need it is easy to establish what resources are available at

a point of the finger in the case of the iPad. (See above)
