Howorth Exflow™: Pure Protection For more than 150 years, the Howorth name has represented technical creativity and expertise in air engineering and its application to climatize and control the working environment. Howorth is a specialist supplier of air technology solutions, serving the global medical, pharmaceutical, and wider industrial markets. The Howorth Exflow™ Ultra Clean Ventilation system was developed in collaboration with the internationally acclaimed orthopedic surgeon, Sir John Charnley. Howorth subsequently perfected and patented the unique Exflow unit with graded velocity airflow, vertical in the central area, and radially outwards at the periphery, creating an exponential profile.

The use of Howorth’s Exflow™ UCV has been proven to reduce the occurrence of micro-organisms within the operating rooms and more specifically the wound site. In the U.K., standards will not allow orthopedic surgeries to be performed without UCV technology.

Installed in nearly 3,000 operating rooms worldwide, the Howorth Exflow™ is now available in two sizes. Both models provide microbiological cleanliness and airflow results exceeding all current regulatory requirements.

Post-Operative Infection ControlResearch indicates that the level of airborne bacteria within an operating room is directly proportional to the level of post-operative infection. It is generally accepted that “clean surgery” with a moderate or high risk of infection should be carried out in an ultra clean atmosphere. The agreed international definition of ‘ultra clean’ is air containing less than 10 Colony Forming Units per cubic metre (< 10 CFU/m3). Howorth, through its collaborative work with Sir John Charnley, is acknowledged as one of the pioneers of aseptic surgical technology. The widespread use of the Howorth Exflow™ Ultra Clean Ventilation (UCV) system has helped reduce post-operative infection rates in orthopaedic surgery from in excess of 10% to 0.2%.

Exflow Evolution™ A 21st century operating theatre needs to allow for flexibility of equipment choice and changing work practices, but present a sleek and streamlined look. The Exflow Evolution™ retains the basic construction of Howorth’s existing Exflow’s, but some innovative engineering at the discharge means the system’s performance has been improved without the need for the traditional partial walls or an increased air volume. At the system’s core are the patented Passive Coanda and Active Coanda systems – unassisted (passive) or assisted (active) air displacement devices designed to replicate the controlled airflow of a solid side-screen.

Howorth continued its ongoing expansion into the United States with the opening of brand new OR showroom at Ciright Medical’s headquarters, based just outside of Philadelphia. Functioning as a research and development facility, the Ciright OR Showroom will enable Howorth to better serve the North American market and provide a base from which to deliver an enhanced level of product and service support.

Exflow™ 28

The Exflow™ 28 provides an Ultra Clean operating zone of 2.8 x 2.8m. The unit provides all the benefits of its larger brother but in a compact package that makes it ideal for retrofit or refurbishment projects.

Exflow™ 32

The Exflow™ 32 has an enlarged Ultra Clean operating zone of 3.2 x 3.2m, allowing the entire operating team and all their instrument tables to be accommodated beneath the canopy. Its in-built luminaries can provide a measured light level in excess of 1,200 lux. Despite the increase of nearly 50% in the volume of air generated by the Exflow™ 32, the system is extremely quiet, meeting noise level targets set-out in HTM 03-01.
