How does your media product represent different social groups?

What social groups have I represented?

• I feel my magazine represents some sort of glamorous girl on the front cover and double page spread (DPS) with party-goer represented on the contents page.

Representing Glamour Girl on the Cover• One way how this is

represented is through mise-en-scene in the photo. The location is the studio and this is considered a glamour girl thing to do- for them to have their own studio shoot.

• This can be interpreted in a negative way as it suggests a vein persona because they want lots of photo’s of themselves taken which is quite vein.

Representing Glamour Girl on the Cover• The use of bright and vibrant colours

create this glamorous representation. Glamour girls are commonly associated with bright colours (blue is a bright colour) and bright lights (the lighting on the cover is extremely bright).

• This can be a positive thing as it makes the cover stand out more against over covers and the audience will be attracted to it through this brightness and are more likely to buy the magazine. There is nothing really negative about this as it isn’t suggesting anything about her.

Representing ‘Glamour Girl’ on the DPS

• One of the ways this social group is represented on the DPS is the font on ‘Pretty Little’. The font choice connotes this type of woman, but also the colour blue is a vibrant colour and this is a connotation of that type of woman.

• This isn’t a positive or negative representation because it’s not suggesting anything good or bad.

Representing Party-Goer on the Contents Page

• The use of a bright light around her and the big smile on her face makes her appear out-going. This is the strongest connotation associated with the Party-Goer social group and using these features makes her appear to be part of that social group and therefore representing that social group.

• This is quite a positive thing as it is a warm and welcoming photo. This makes the audience want to read as they would feel these positive emotions from the photo.
