Who is Whitford?Whitford formulates and manufactures

high-performance fluoropolymer and ceramic coatings (also known as “nonstick”or “release” coatings). We have coatingsfor countless applications, including foodcontact, small electrics, high-temperatureuse, decorative, industrial, aerospace, au-tomotive, chemical processing, textiles, etc.

Often we formulate special coatings tosolve a customer’s specific problem ratherthan reach for an off-the-shelf product. If we don’t have the right coating to solveyour problem, we’ll develop one that will. A wide range of coatings for small electricsis described below.

Eterna®: Rates a 10The pinnacle in nonstick coatings —

outstanding nonstick that lasts — wasfinally achieved by Whitford when we created Eterna.

The “Dry-Egg” test is a standard meas-ure of food release. Eggs are cooked, oneby one, in a nonstick pan with no butter oroil. The test is repeated until the eggs nolonger lift off with ease.

Tested were nonstick pans from threemajor manufacturers. A similar pan coated

with new Eterna was tested. Theresults: Nonstick “A” lasted for13 fried eggs. Nonstick “B”went to 15. Nonstick “C” wentto 33. New Eterna went for350 fried eggs — at whichtime the test was stopped.

That’s more than 26times better than oneof today’s most pop-

ular nonstick coat-ings, and more than ten

times better than the nearest top-end com-petitive nonstick system. Eterna works wellon aluminum castings when a high-releasecoating is specified for high-end, gourmethousewares small electrics.

Eclipse®: Rates a 10Eclipse is a multicoat system engineered

to outlast all other reinforced nonstick coat-ings. The unique primer contains a combi-nation of resins and unusually hard materials.Because it contains no nonstick (virtually allcookware primers do), it can be dedicatedentirely to (a) adhesionand (b) reinforcement.

The midcoat alsocontains special reinforcements, whichpermit the top-coat to be ded-icated entirelyto release.

This inte-grated systemprovides resistance to wear thatexceeds by far all of Whitford's (and other)internally reinforced systems. SpecifyEclipse for any high-end or gourmet-typesmall electrics.

QuanTanium®: Rates a 9QuanTanium should be specified for all

moderately-priced small electrics. It is amulticoat system that contains a uniqueblend of titanium particles that reinforce asthey provide unusual durability. This non-stick system has been formulated to createmaximum synergy with the titanium, result-ing in outstanding resistance to all kinds ofwear with superb release.

Quantum350®: Rates an 8As manufacturers of appliances know,

one of the most costly problems with alu-minum castings is “outgassing”, the sud-den “pop” of trapped air escaping frominside the aluminum as it is heated duringthe curing of the nonstick coating, oftenleaving an ugly “blister” that means thepiece is a reject. The higher the cure tem-perature, the greater the incidence of suchblisters.

Quantum350 was formulatedspecifically for cast aluminum.Virtually all nonstick coatingscure between 400-430°C/750-805°F. And most blis-tering begins to occur at380°C/715°F. What’s re-markable about newQuantum350 is that itcures at 350°C/660°F.In terms of damagefrom blisters, Quan-

tum350 is far better thanconventional two-coats.

This coating offers advantages not pre-viously available to appliance manufactur-ers. It reduces rejects in cast aluminumdramatically, offers better, longer-lasting release, saves energy, is easier to applyand makes a more eye-appealing product.It does all this in a remarkable, metallic one-coat coating!

Quantum2®: Rates a 7Quantum2 was developed to outlast

conventional nonsticks (even the latestimproved versions). Both the primer and the midcoat are reinforced internally with a diverse blend of tough space-age inorganicparticles. The fluoropolymers have been altered to blend with the other elements inthe coating to achieve maximum durability.No special application equipment is re-quired for any of our internally reinforcednonsticks.

Quantum2 provides a nonstick surfacethat is smoother, with higher eye-catching

gloss than conventionalnonsticks. It was de-signed for surfaces

which requirenonstick

prop-erties

and are subject to abrasionand/or high wear. It is ideal for moderate pricepoints.

Fusion®: Rates a 6Whitford offers a line of improved water-

borne ceramic nonsticks that are totally free of PTFE and PFOA. Because they are ceramic, they can be taken to extreme tem-peratures (850°F/455°C). Yet, they cure atlower temperatures, using less energy andsaving money.

Ceramic coatings are multi-pack sys-tems and involve some fairly complicatedchemistry. But we have simplified the appli-cation process by reducing the number ofpacks required. Our two-coat ceramic system needs only two packs for the base-and topcoat.

In spite of all the positives about Fusion,the fact remains that long-term nonstickperformance of all ceramic coatings is notas good as conventional nonsticks.

Xylan®: Rates a 5-6Xylan, Whitford’s largest line of coatings,

is specified worldwide bymanufacturers, importers, ex-porters and retail chains foruse on products from the mosteconomical to the more expen-sive cookware, bakeware,electric griddles andgrills, to rice cookers,breadmakers, coffeemakers, sandwich mak-ers, waffle makers, etc.

Xylan comes in one-,two- and three- coat versions. And today,they are far superior to the coatings of evena few years ago.

Many Xylan coatings are offered in asolvent-borne silicone option (the Seriesnumber is followed by an “S”). In this ver-sion, the silicone replaces the PTFE, provid-ing similar release characteristics. With therange of products within the Xylan familythere are choices from promotional/OPP tomoderate on a price/performance basis.

Xylac®: Decorative EnamelsXylac 4320 decorative enamels bond

well to plastics and other temperature-sen-sitive substrates. They are available in arainbow of bright,eye-catchingmetallic andnonmetallic colors with goodgloss appeal.This feature allows designers tomatch coated metal components to plasticparts on the same product.

Xylac 4500 or 4700 is ideal when coat-ing metal housings. They are “better” qual-ity high-temperature decorative enamels.These enamels bond tenaciously to steel,aluminum, plastics and even chrome.

They provide extremely tough abrasion-resistant finishes capable of maintainingtheir color and other properties after ex-tended periods at elevated temperatures.Formulations are available for coil, roller orspray application techniques.

Coatings for IronsAn often overlooked small appliance is

the iron. Irons need a low coefficient of fric-tion to reduce drag and make ironing easier,but they also need superb release to pre-vent starch and other residue buildup. A

third property offered by Whitfordcoatings is abrasion resistancewith the durability to stand up tothe rough surfaces of manyfabrics. As such, Whitford offers various grades of sole-plate coatings.

QuanTanium is the perfectchoice for a high-quality steamor dry-iron. A more economi-

cal, but durable, coating is Quan-tum2. It is abrasion-, corrosion-,

and chemical-resistant while providing asmooth lubricious nonstick surface.

Xylan 1010, Whitford’s very first indus-trial coating, is known for its outstandingdry-film lubrication, making it ideal for spraypump parts. In the same family of coatings,Xylan 1022 is an easy-to-apply one coat forsteam-generator chambers promoting wet-ting of the chamber to improve steam gen-eration while helping to prevent corrosion.

Whitford recommends Xylac 4320 exte-rior coating for iron handles and skirts. It isformulated for application to phenolics andcomes in virtually any color, includingmetallics and pearlescents.

Whitford’s QualityCooperative Program

Years ago, as an important step to ex-pand quality control, Whitford established the Quality Cooperative Program (QCP). Itsprimary purpose is to achieve and maintainthe highest quality possible by preventingproblems from occurring before any coatedproducts reach point-of-sale.

The QCP establishescertain quality standardsthat must be met bythose who apply Whit-ford coatings. It alsooutlines specific testprocedures that must becarried out on randomsamples of all coated products to makesure that these high application standardsare maintained.
