What is Aid?

Short term aid: help given to an area immediately after the disaster (hours, days)

Long term aid: help given in the following weeks months, years.

The Haiti Aid Effort• The international community gave £6.5billion in

short and long term aid to Haiti after the earthquake. This came from a variety of places including:

• World Bank (they also stopped the debt repayments Haiti had to pay back for the next 5 years)

• Individual Governments including, UK, USA, Brazil, Spain, Canada, France

• Non- Governmental organisations (NGO’s-charities e.g. Oxfam, Red Cross

What was the best form of aid given to Haiti?

1. Short term: Food packages and the set up of basic shelter tents

2. Long term: Improvements in schools, building designs, access to medical services.
